The Latemar group is less known to our mountaineers, stretching south of the Rosengarten group (here). It is separated from it by the Passo di Costalunga pass; along its peaks runs the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. The range is karstic in form, with a characteristic reddish color, or even better … salmon color . To explore this area, we took two days. The length of the trails and the terrain we would hike played an important role. Due to the shape of the range, we started in the smaller town of Predazzo and finished in tourist Moena. From there we returned to the start by local bus. In two days we did 33 km and 2900 elevation gain. Start coordinates (Predazzo): 46.310708, 11.597323 Our impressions ... Trail 515: From Predazzo it is extremely steep and easily comparable to the Carnic Pisimon. There were extensive windthrows in the area; the trail was arranged by caring hands and is fully passable. Most of it was even mowed during our visit, as undergrowth on bare slopes grows fast. The steepness eases only under the summit plateau. There we visited some nearby peaks and headed toward the goal of the first day … the Rif. Torre di Pissa hut. We reached it via trail 516. About the hut, only the best . The hut is like from a box, the staff extremely friendly, prices much lower than elsewhere despite the huge number of daily visitors. It has never happened to us that at dinner we could get as many repeats as we wanted in the basic half-board price . Next morning we headed for the range traverse. Right behind the hut is the area's landmark, a tower that by its stance reminds of the one in Pisa. The hut is named after it. The continuation is high-alpine enjoyment with views far around. We followed trail 516, then 511. This runs via the quite demanding ferrata Campanili del Latemar. Its difficulty reaches C category, but it is quite long and accordingly strenuous. In between we visited the prominent peak Cimon del Latemar, resembling a diamond, and after the Rigatti bivouac, the mountain Schenòn del Latemar, which gets the most visits from the other side. And the descent to the opposite side surprised us. To the Forcella Piccola del Latemar saddle we expected a comfortable trail, but it was anything but. Quite a few hikers from that direction had trouble advancing. From the saddle we descended to the valley via trail 517B, then 517, and after a few km of traversing right we reached an unpleasant notice. Both available trails (517 and 524) were closed (September 2023) without notice on previous signs. What now??? We noticed water intakes along trail 524. We risked the idea that they need regular maintenance. We were right. The whole trail further was cleared of obstacles and we descended to the valley without problems. We have often noticed that trail closures are set up quickly, then simply forgotten despite the later recleared trail. Luckily it worked out for us and we were quickly in Moena. A quick hop on the local bus and the adventure was done . More in the photostory …

Bravo, beautiful! Note: Torre Diamantidi / Cimon del Latemar is named after the Austrian alpinist D. Diamantidis, who summited in 1892.
