Dolomites Latemar

The Latemar group is less known to our mountaineers, stretching south of the Rosengarten group (here). It is separated from it by the Passo di Costalunga pass; along its peaks runs the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. The range is karstic in form, with a characteristic reddish color, or even better … salmon color nasmeh.

To explore this area, we took two days. The length of the trails and the terrain we would hike played an important role. Due to the shape of the range, we started in the smaller town of Predazzo and finished in tourist Moena. From there we returned to the start by local bus. In two days we did 33 km and 2900 elevation gain.

Start coordinates (Predazzo): 46.310708, 11.597323

Our impressions ...

Trail 515: From Predazzo it is extremely steep and easily comparable to the Carnic Pisimon. There were extensive windthrows in the area; the trail was arranged by caring hands and is fully passable. Most of it was even mowed during our visit, as undergrowth on bare slopes grows fast.

The steepness eases only under the summit plateau. There we visited some nearby peaks and headed toward the goal of the first day … the Rif. Torre di Pissa hut. We reached it via trail 516. About the hut, only the best nasmeh. The hut is like from a box, the staff extremely friendly, prices much lower than elsewhere despite the huge number of daily visitors. It has never happened to us that at dinner we could get as many repeats as we wanted in the basic half-board price velik nasmeh.

Next morning we headed for the range traverse. Right behind the hut is the area's landmark, a tower that by its stance reminds of the one in Pisa. The hut is named after it. The continuation is high-alpine enjoyment with views far around. We followed trail 516, then 511. This runs via the quite demanding ferrata Campanili del Latemar. Its difficulty reaches C category, but it is quite long and accordingly strenuous. In between we visited the prominent peak Cimon del Latemar, resembling a diamond, and after the Rigatti bivouac, the mountain Schenòn del Latemar, which gets the most visits from the other side.

And the descent to the opposite side surprised us. To the Forcella Piccola del Latemar saddle we expected a comfortable trail, but it was anything but. Quite a few hikers from that direction had trouble advancing. From the saddle we descended to the valley via trail 517B, then 517, and after a few km of traversing right we reached an unpleasant notice. Both available trails (517 and 524) were closed (September 2023) without notice on previous signs. What now???

We noticed water intakes along trail 524. We risked the idea that they need regular maintenance. We were right. The whole trail further was cleared of obstacles and we descended to the valley without problems. We have often noticed that trail closures are set up quickly, then simply forgotten despite the later recleared trail. Luckily it worked out for us and we were quickly in Moena. A quick hop on the local bus and the adventure was done nasmeh. More in the photostory …
Dolomites Latemar Parked in Predazzo near the start of our path1
Dolomites Latemar View of the sleepy town waking up to a new day2
Dolomites Latemar Signpost for path 515. Later the name Sentiero Pelenzana also appears several times3
Dolomites Latemar The rocks have interesting colors, best compared to salmon color4
Dolomites Latemar From here they transported stones to the valley for facade cladding and these inscriptions are probably from then5
Dolomites Latemar Most are well over 150 years old, the oldest I found dates from 17826
Dolomites Latemar Unpleasant surprise for us. What about the continuation?7
Dolomites Latemar The path is hewn and carefully tended. Mown in many places. We can hardly believe it :)8
Dolomites Latemar To the summit plateau it's one steep incline, thereafter the terrain flattens9
Dolomites Latemar Our first peak, from which the path gets its name … Pelenzana. Later another peak with the same name appears10
Dolomites Latemar View back on the plateau world. We emerged behind the edge back there11
Dolomites Latemar In that direction we go. Right at the top of the ridge on the left is hut Rif. Torre di Pisa12
Dolomites Latemar A comfortable path 516 leads to it, presenting geological features in its lower section13
Dolomites Latemar Grassy slopes rise high into the mountain, then rocky terrain takes over14
Dolomites Latemar On the path there is more and more scree, the environment is changing15
Dolomites Latemar From the neighboring summit Cima Valbona we see the hut close up for the first time16
Dolomites Latemar To it leads a terraced and not at all level path17
Dolomites Latemar Hut Rif. Torre di Pisa at altitude 2671 m18
Dolomites Latemar Signposts as you rarely see :). The day is still early, so we hurry to the nearby summit Cima Feudo19
Dolomites Latemar On the path we observe the ridge where we will go tomorrow. That will still be interesting :)20
Dolomites Latemar We're all back already. The staff is exceptionally friendly and everything shines with cleanliness. Prices are lower than ours21
Dolomites Latemar Our bedroom for that night. Everything is clean, five hikers will sleep us22
Dolomites Latemar Morning of the second day ....23
Dolomites Latemar The path continuation is right behind the hut24
Dolomites Latemar Very early it's still frosty, but the sun soon does its work :)25
Dolomites Latemar Torre di Pisa, I wonder which one that would be :)26
Dolomites Latemar Ridge of Cima Feudo, where we were yesterday evening27
Dolomites Latemar Our continuation, path 51128
Dolomites Latemar We'll have to go to that saddle. There the ferrata Campanili del Latemar starts29
Dolomites Latemar Still official warnings of the older sort30
Dolomites Latemar The cables are fortunately newer :) You never know, on our paths we have come across all sorts31
Dolomites Latemar We slowly ascend between pillars, difficulty around B category32
Dolomites Latemar View back to the climbers who started after us :)33
Dolomites Latemar First more serious crossing. ...34
Dolomites Latemar The cable is installed high up, no feeling of exposure.35
Dolomites Latemar The end is a bit trickier, but still nothing serious.36
Dolomites Latemar But the harder passages follow one after another ...37
Dolomites Latemar In many places we ride the ridge, but never with a lump in the throat38
Dolomites Latemar There are also quite a few unprotected passages, some even crowded39
Dolomites Latemar View back at part of the path traversed on the ledges40
Dolomites Latemar Hands in pockets only rarely :)41
Dolomites Latemar Cimon del Latemar, also called Torre Diamantidi due to its characteristic shape42
Dolomites Latemar We've come far, where is the hut Rif. Torre di Pisa already :)43
Dolomites Latemar We go on. What will follow?44
Dolomites Latemar Some gentle ledges are excellently protected45
Dolomites Latemar Follows traversing volcanic rocks like filling in a potica :)46
Dolomites Latemar In the distance Schenòn del Latemar appears, our next goal47
Dolomites Latemar And right here the via ferrata shows its biggest teeth ...48
Dolomites Latemar Follows descent into a deep fissure with step-over to the other side49
Dolomites Latemar The first one is already behind us ...50
Dolomites Latemar Follows bonus package, much deeper descent, all excellently protected51
Dolomites Latemar The pegs are newer type preventing sideways slip52
Dolomites Latemar Follows traversing volcanic rock and ascent of the opposite wall53
Dolomites Latemar The demanding traverse has no end ....54
Dolomites Latemar Finally we reach a solid path and due to the abundance of protections we don't even know how to walk properly :)55
Dolomites Latemar Bivouac Rigatti with characteristic interior layout56
Dolomites Latemar View back to the wild environment in which it stands57
Dolomites Latemar We were up there ... Torre Diamantidi / Cimon del Latemar58
Dolomites Latemar This is already Schenòn del Latemar, also Latemarspitze59
Dolomites Latemar The summit itself is easily accessible and this time we see visitors for the first time who came from the other direction60
Dolomites Latemar This direction is anyway on our path and we expect a comfortable path. Mistake :)61
Dolomites Latemar The passages are narrow and unprotected. Many who come towards us have difficulties62
Dolomites Latemar White and dark rocks constantly alternate63
Dolomites Latemar There is also a lot of scree and progress requires all caution64
Dolomites Latemar After a long and strenuous descent we finally reach the junction at the saddle Forcella Piccola del Latemar65
Dolomites Latemar We turn right into the valley on path 517B66
Dolomites Latemar An hour later at the shepherd's hut we turn sharply right onto path 51767
Dolomites Latemar Along a narrow and pleasant path we walk a few kilometers, then …68
Dolomites Latemar Unpleasant surprise. Both available directions are closed … path 517 and path 524. There is no other69
Dolomites Latemar We take a risk and due to water intakes descend on path 524. The path is cleared and soon we are on a wide road70
Dolomites Latemar Moena is not far anymore. There we look for a bus towards Predazzo and the starting point is not far71
Dolomites Latemar GPS track of the walked path in two days. It amounted to 33 km and 2900 m elevation gain72

Bravo, beautiful!
Note: Torre Diamantidi / Cimon del Latemar is named after the Austrian alpinist D. Diamantidis, who summited in 1892.
