Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants

Every mountain range has some of its own characteristics by which you remember it. The Dolomites Puez Odle are adorned with long wide slopes, grassy traverses similar to our Košuta, comfortable, nicely routed paths and more could be found. There are also some mighty ones, but most don't have marked paths leading to them. Where they do, they're not too difficult. Ferratas are mostly A/B category, there are also some C sections, but few. We chose circular paths where possible and visited all marked summits in the area. Nowhere did we have issues with markings or poor fixed protection. Everything is maintained and tidy. A peculiarity of this area is that you don't feel like you're in Italy at all . It's more Tyrolean overall, plus most speak the native Ladin language, completely incomprehensible to me. No issues with communication in huts though, they make an effort and accommodate you. In short, very nice and happily hiked . More in the photo story ... The Puez-Odle group happened at the end of September. I'd had it in mind for a while because it seems extremely interesting for ski touring antics, especially the extravagant descent down the Val Scura gully between Sassongher and Ores de Sassongher, which requires a rope descent on the way down the valley. Suitable for very good touring enthusiasts - a local told me the last season was bad, the one before so good that he skied the gully without 'abseil'. My trip was in dry conditions, but since snow fell just before I arrived in the Dolomites, I encountered it here and there as samples and everywhere it had turned into icy patches. Still, it didn't cause me any trouble. Past the Gardenacia hut, I headed under the cliffs of Para dai Giai towards Sassongher saddle, turned right shortly before it onto a steep scree path and visited points 2615 m and 2635 m, which offer not only a fantastic view of Sassongher and its SE turreted ridge, but also the volcano-like cone Col dala Soné, which I reached after descending to the plains, from which I continued through pathless-ridge terrain to the summit. Pathlessness in terms of orientation is no obstacle to reaching the top, just don't shy away from scree. I descended north, circled it halfway and finally rejoined the marked path that led me to the hut named after the highest in the mountain group. Past the 'martinčkarji' enjoying drinks and food, I headed to the mentioned summit, Piza de Puez, and en route checked out the continuation to the little-known summit Muntejela. When I reached its highest stone, I looked east again. It wasn't far to the next 'unknown' Ciampani. Finally I had everything planned in place, so I descended past Col Toronn (not the one above Jummy hut at 2655 m) and continued across green meadows past many marmot holes to Gardenacia hut and on towards 'civilization'. The mountain group isn't as crowded as many others in the Dolomites area, but no less interesting because of that. Perhaps even more so...

Piz de Puez – 2913 m Piz de Puez is almost the house summit of the central hut in the Puez group, named, of course, Rifugio Puez . Despite the height it's easily accessible, so anyone with some fitness can go for it. The path is routed in numerous switchbacks, so it's not strenuous nor much exposed. We headed for it from La Villa, more precisely from in front of Santa Maria Assunta church. First we took path 11 to Rif. Gardenaccia hut, which got a new extension this year. It has a larger kitchen and new rooms. From the hut we continued on 11 to the indistinct summit Piz de Gherdenacia. The path there is wonderful, open and very gentle. We passed the summit casually, which despite low height is panoramic. Followed a slight descent on path marked 1 to Rif. Puez hut. There obviously the manager changed and the hut earned the title of the most expensive among many we visited in the Dolomites. More expensive even than Sassolungo and Sesto areas, including Locatelli hut in the heart of Tre Cime. Not many people sitting in front of the hut, perhaps due to high prices. To Piz du Puez we climbed the only access path marked 14. Beautiful weather and light breeze gave us wings and we were quickly at the top. It's an excellent viewpoint and in fine weather you see far around. Followed a short rest and return past Sassongher. Piz de Puez (21/7/2024) In the apartment I put on my hiking boots and hit the road. Not far to the church, above it I take the footpath. To Ütia Gardenacia hut and a bit further the path was familiar, already hiked, further on "one" to Ütia Puez hut not yet. Weather in the morning heavenly, really fairy-tale like, uphill to Puez summit not even (too) hot. Between huts almost alone, only met and overtook one German-speaking family. Also few people in front of Puez hut, relatively early hour of course. Views such that I groaned aloud from sheer beauty, good no one nearby. Above Puez hut sheep with painted butts, more red than blue, the red ones I named mobile markers (red "ass" and white fleece). From hut to summit faster than expected, of course no complaints about that. On top quite a while alone, like forgotten by the creator, briefly with three locals, lady and gentlemen. Panorama pure pleasure, also because I've wandered a bit in these parts and many nearby and some farther mountains were already familiar. More by name than visited. Then descent, at the beginning noticed weather worsening and getting worse. Back at Puez hut crowd, so continue down out, with quickened pace because of weather. In Gardenacia quench thirst, just before that lightning strikes behind Sassongher, me happy to be so low already. Then down out, meanwhile some thunder, few raindrops fall, wind picks up, me in some "slow motion", as if not seeing weather getting worse. As punishment soaks me to the skin quarter hour before home, but it doesn't bother me. Paths top-notch, markings and signposts excellent. Wonderful trip that calls for repetition in another season, with quite different gear https://tubojan.blogspot.com/2024/07/piz-de-puez.html
