Dürrenstein/Picco di Vallandro

For last year's Christmas holidays we strolled around winter Platzwiesen/Prato Piazza and already then I decided to include this viewpoint among the first visits of this year's Dolomites. It's a really nice trait if a person also realizes their decisions, but I'm a bit afraid that there are too many decisions and wishes ...

Even though it's already a week since the visit, the conditions on the path are the same, as they were already dry the previous week.

On the second day of exploring the Dolomites we headed to Picco di Vallandro. Our starting point was just a few kilometers from the previous day's start for Tre Cime, so we could start hiking early enough. The whole loop was quite long and that suited us perfectly velik nasmeh. It was our first visit to the Braies Dolomites and I can say not the last nasmeh. Full path description follows in the photo story …

Parking coordinates (free): 46.6456992N, 12.2325156E
We turn onto trail 34 past the Tre Cime hotel. We park a few hundred meters lower.1
The trail is a very comfortable mule track that gently overcomes the elevation.2
In the lower part there are numerous remains of fortifications from which they monitored the Val di Landro valley.3
The trail is full of surprises and not at all boring :)4
Even now the passages are nicely maintained and well secured at exposed places.5
Even some tunnel can be found….6
In many places a considerable amount of explosives was needed to trace the path.7
Another of the remains of military facilities.8
All of this is new to us and incidentally we are at the Sella di Monte Specie saddle.9
Monte Specie, or rather Strudelkopf, 2307 m high peak. It got its name from its shape.10
Besides the large cross, the peak also has an interesting rose with surrounding peaks.11
The shape of the peaks is identical to those in the picture, and next to it the name and height are also written.12
From the top we return to the saddle and continue in the direction of Picco di Vallandro.13
Rif. Vallandro hut at the former fortress. We will turn here on the return.14
We continue on path 40A. The terrain is open and panoramic, a light breeze mitigates the heat.15
Higher we join path 40, which leads directly to the summit.16
It looks quite close from below, but that's far from the truth :)17
The path just doesn't end. But it is nicely traced, comfortable and not strenuous.18
The summit must be somewhere there. You find out exactly where the highest point is only right before the end of the path.19
In between the path touches the ridge and reveals views to the other side as well.20
We go further …21
This is it, the 2839 m high Picco di Vallandro. A short and well-protected passage over exposed rocky terrain follows22
And we are already at the top. Views are excellent, no frost, so we take a slightly longer break23
We descend the same path, since the summit has no other access24
The weather cooperates with us. Some clouds provide excellent shade and the descent is immediately easier :)25
We are already in the valley. Here livestock is at home and cows do not let themselves be disturbed26
Hut Rif. Vallandro. 2x large draught beer, 2x coffee, 1x cesarski praženec, 1x portion of yogurt with forest fruits = 34 €27
We do a circular variant, therefore descend into the valley along the path marked 3728
This one too is very scenic in the upper part, lower down it enters the forest29
Path marker …30
In Carbonin we reach the main road, cross it and continue on the opposite side31
Soon we turn onto path 6B, which leads us past the lakelet Lago di Landro towards the starting point32
The lake is warm enough that it is full of bathers. No one swims, everyone just wades in the shallow water.33
The lake is fed by the Rienza river and fortunately a little bridge is placed here.34
A view back at Monte Piana, which will be our goal the next day …35
Another view of Tre Cime, where we were the previous day. We like to explore the entire area to avoid unnecessary travel.36
The fortress Forte di Landro, which will host us for one night :). The sun is setting and preparations for the next day follow.37
GPS track of the walked path. It recorded 30 km and 1900 elevation meters.38

You plan your tours very well, especially regarding loop planning and start (end) points! Congratulations!
How was the night in Landro fortress? nasmeh

Hehe @bbugari nasmeh. Ghosts of the past left us alone, road noise also more bearable. Original plan was overnight in Vallandro hut, but fully booked for whole July.
