To prevent dust from accumulating on our new ski touring guide , we started using it right away to discover completely new places or peaks for us. The decision for today was also helped a bit by the posts last weekend on the ski touring forum, which promised good powder. We drive through the Karawanks tunnel to Gmünd and on to the village of Malta in the valley of the same name (Maltatal), then up a steep and narrow but fully asphalted and almost to the top dry road to the starting point – Leonhardhütte, which is open. Directly from the parking lot we continue on skis to the Faschaun pasture (on maps: In der Faschaun), then up a long and quite steep slope to the summit ridge, then further past a large cairn along the ridge toward the summit. The summit belongs to the Hafner group in the High Tauern, is quite indistinct and therefore less visited by hikers, but all the more popular among ski tourers. Today there was unusually much traffic for a Monday. Most finished the tour on the ridge, we two, who were here for the first time, of course went to the summit too. Skis need to be left a few dozen meters lower, as the summit itself is almost rocky. Although many have obviously skied here in recent days, the slope below the summit is so vast that we easily found plenty of "untouched" for us too. On a hard base there's about 10-20 cm of powder, so we enjoyed maximally. But today was a "hot" day and snow visibly decreased from morning to afternoon, so a "new shipment" would be very welcome. The tour was just our taste – on skis "from car to car" (if we exclude that short hike to the summit), wonderful views, sunny without a cloud and complete calm... almost kitschy
