Ferrata Giovanni Barbara - Fanes Waterfall

We visited the canyon last Tuesday because the weather wasn't really suitable for higher peaks. The bridge hasn't been repaired yet. No more snow in the gully. The waterfall is quite powerful and soaks you properly at the bottom.

Our main goal this time was the via ferrata Giovanni Barbara, for which we never found time over the years. There are so many interesting peaks and approaches to them in the area that we always tackled something else. But this was a calculation without the innkeeper rolling. The very first waterfall right at the start quickly stopped us. Due to snow melting it was so full of water that we would have needed either swimsuits or neoprene clothing to cross the path under it big. The continuation was a complete unknown, so we turned back instead. A tough decision, but safety comes first. Sniff, sniff … see you next time.

We still had time left, so we changed our goal and headed towards the high-mountain lake Lago di Limo and the hut Ucia de Gran Fanes. Both lie on a plateau reached by a bike path through the Val Fanes valley, also marked as hiking trail number 10. The valley is interesting in itself, so despite the length we were not bored. From the via ferrata an additional seven kilometers are added in one direction, altogether over nine from the parking lot. But what of it, the weather was great, nature too, and on the way back we had already forgotten the unrealized original goal smile.

Starting point coordinates (Sant'Uberto): 46.6030664N, 12.1062878E
We drive to the Sant'Uberto parking lot, where signposts are available right away1
The sun has just illuminated the first peaks, and we descend slightly at the beginning2
On the way there are various attractions, such as the work of the forest Hilti, except that this one works on worms and beetles :)3
Timber neatly stacked to zero. You can see that the Tyroleans are at home here4
Deep gorge of the Rio Travenanzes river from the Ponte Alto bridge5
Entry into the via ferrata. Surprisingly, there is no warning about the necessary via ferrata equipment at its beginning6
Tourists walk up to here and somewhere here a Slovenian woman recently slipped as well7
The path is wet, the depth below it endless. We carefully approach the first waterfall8
The water spray catches us and quickly soaks us9
The cables are down there and we would still have to go behind the waterfall. If we continue we will be as wet as a drowned cat10
We have no idea what follows, so we turn back. We will return in autumn at lower water level11
What now? Let's go to Lago de Limo. We haven't walked the Val Fanes valley anyway12
Nice, for a change it's not very hot either13
We follow path 10, which is also a cycle path14
They have the car park behind the barrier, no entrance fee collected :)15
We continue …16
Year 1915/1617
The stream Rio di Fanes provides pleasant cooling18
For the direction Lago di Limo we turn right onto the old mule track marked 10A19
Back fin of a petrified fish :) The highest part is Cima Dieci with a short and sweet via ferrata20
Incredible, the small lake Lago di Limo has evaporated. Current level is at least five metres lower than usual21
Reminder of the First World War. We have learned nothing …22
Drying of sleeping mats of those hikers on Alta Via 1 who did not get accommodation23
Path 11. Along it we still go to the hut Ucia de Gran Fanes24
The hut is a shepherd’s hut, in the surroundings there are numerous horses and cows25
For some years they also serve hikers. In the nearby trough there is running, drinking water26
We go back a bit and turn again onto path 1027
A pair of springs …28
We return through the same valley. This time it is also full of cyclists29
Hmm … would, wouldn’t ???30
Oh, how it tastes :)31
The ducks already know. All are in the water, none on dry land :)32
Gorge Torrente Boite on the way to the starting point33
We are finishing …34
We have accumulated 21 km and 1000 meters of elevation35

We were lucky on Saturday and we crossed it. A little water even suited us.

Conditions with such amount of water probably change rapidly, therefore any forecast is doubtful.
