Hochbrunnerschneid / Mt. Popera

End of August PD Vitanje traditionally heads out on a two-day jaunt in the Dolomites. This time to Rif. Lunelli via ferrata Roghel. It took a good 9h with breaks to Rif. Carducci. For a 13-member group it was a solid pace. The ferrata is quite demanding in some spots, definitely not for those with vertigo.

At the Carducci hut a well-deserved dinner and beer (some rather swore by "vino bianco"). The warden is an older alpinist, once (actually quite recently) also a participant in the Ama Dablam expedition. At 2295m we slept for an incredible 3€! Officially on emergency bunks, but those emergency bunks had real mattresses and were more comfortable than many beds.

After getting up still in pitch dark we headed to the 3046m high Hochbrunnerschneid / Mt. Popera. Breakfast at sunrise with view of Cime and Paterno is also a real treat. After descent we met the "medium" group and together took off along Strada degli Alpini. Very scenic path, so much so it's almost kitschy. Add a sunny Sunday and no need to explain it was a real highway up there.

Hochbrunnerschneid / Mt. Popera interesting markings... if you saw this in the valley you would first think they lead to a circus or a štanc festival ;)10

Congratulations everyone for the nice tour. From the pictures I gather you probably started and ended the tour at Lunelli hut, so the second day was quite long?

Tour from 11.8.2023.

Easiest three-thousander (2043m) in central Sexten Dolomites group around Tre Cime.

The path itself is not marked on Tabacco No. 10 map. On Locus map it is. The path is not marked and there is no ironware (cables, ..).
It runs from the western side, further left is the waterfall, to the right go into the valley towards the glacier and then on scree.

No orientation problems, as cairns are often placed and the path is well trodden. Midweek in August there were about 15 hikers on this path in 3 hours.
The starting part is in the shade in the morning, at least until 9-10 a.m. There are some snow patches, but they are no problem. There is one small glacier, but the path goes past it on the left and you do not step on it. Whether the path was passable 2-3 weeks into July without winter gear, I can't say.
The first part is easy, on scree which is quite long. It is not too bad going up, it does not slip too often.

At 2800 meters the scree ends and rocks begin. Here is the technically hardest part. First to the entrance into the gully. The gully is full of stones, but the slope is not that steep. You have to find holds a bit on the side in the rock. After the exit there is one more difficult part and that's it. There is no II here, I think I+ maximum. The rest of the path to the summit is easy.

If one is used to doing very demanding paths in Slovenia, there should be no problem here.

The summit is fairly flat, with low slope.

In short, a nice, fairly easy three-thousander, accessible.

Regards,
