Hochwipfel

After Škabrijel and Triglav, today also to Hochwipfel. Marjeta, who is very much at home there, also planned this Carnic tour. We drive to Paularo and towards the Cason di Lanza pass (open only since Saturday, also from Pontebba); a few km below the pass from the Paularo direction we park and go on path 451 to Cordin Grande pasture and further to border saddle Kordin Sattel, and below Schulterkofel on a long traverse to the east, where the path turned on a wide ridge back to the west and to the Hochwipfel summit. Very panoramic peak above Gail Valley, definitely worth visiting. In the already full book from last year we found only someone from Jesenice signed, who regularly appears in these parts anyway. From the summit we descended part of the path on the ascent route, then turned to path 417 towards Rattendorfer Sattel, re-entered Italy and returned on the Sirs path to Cason di Lanza (Lonice). There everything is open of course, pasta was great, even more Gäser, the sun was warming and it was quite hard to head to the valley. So much gentian as now along the paths around there we've never seen anywhere.

The weather was a bit tricky in the morning, but after a short shower, the game of hide-and-seek with mists began, occasionally granting us a glimpse of the view. To guess where it fits in the big puzzle gradually built from numerous field and desk experiences. In the afternoon, the mists retreated and went to cover other hills, over Lonice the sun rays dried a sea of thick blueberries, cranberries and other floristic sights.
Pastures up to the top of Hochwipfel, and also on all surrounding slopes, have dressed in magical orange color these days. Almost kitschy. Trails are comfortable, but if we stray off the trail, be prepared for some marshy surprise.
In the north wind that often changed direction with us, we didn't sweat too much. The neighboring Schulter (2091m) kindly let us climb it and as a reward showed the last optimistic alpine flowers right on top.
On the way back to Lonice pass we also climbed Cima di Lanza, 1893 m high vantage point under the border ridge with two names (Ringmauer or Pale di San Lorenzo). In its rifle trenches, in shelter we revived memories of our grandfathers who 101-5 years ago here and in the near and far surroundings sweated their bloody path.
The road from Tabla (Pontebba) to Lonice (Passo di Cason di Lanza) was overrun in May this year by the Giro d'Italia bike race, so it's exemplary resurfaced with fresh asphalt.

Somewhat delayed report on ascent to Hochwipfel from Gail Valley via north ridge. Green, long, solitary and extremely panoramic.
