To not open new topics, last weekend we had a small glacier seminar on the glacier below Johannisberg. We slept in the winter room of Oberwalder Hütte (2.997 m) which holds 10 people, but there were 17 of us and we comfortably slept without issues. Weather wonderful, especially on Saturday, on Sunday it blew a bit and clouded over in the afternoon. Walk to the hut about 3 hours, nothing difficult, but they chased us out of the tunnel which is officially closed, so we had to descend to Pasterze and climb back up, which extended the walk by about 2 hours. But on the way back we didn't let them, we descended through the tunnels (they work on Sunday too, and are muddy and full of machines). And I'll add some pictures...
Gross .... 1
Descent to Pasterze 2
Pasterze in full length, in the background is Johannisberg, hut Oberwalde is located on the distinct right hill 3
Every now and then marks show how much it has retreated in the last thirty years, and the dry glacier bed is clearly visible 4
Glacier crevasses on Pasterze, luckily we do not cross them 5
View back at Pasterze, on the right side the path from FJ Hohe over the tunnels is visible ...6
Another view of Gross, the famous Pallavicini route is nicely visible 7
We climbed back up to the normal path 8
Oberwalder Hütte. We are going there ...9
Short break at the viewpoint until reaching the mulattiera over the tunnels. Afterwards an unregulated mountaineering path, marked only by cairns ....10
There were no sherpas for hire at the parking lot, we carried everything ourselves ...11
Towards the hut ...12
13
And a wonderful day came about on Saturday, for short sleeves ...14
View back on the path walked...15
Fuscherkarkopf (3,331 m)16
You have to go up there, over the wall. There is another variant that is more recommended for descent...17
View downwards... it's not as bad as it looks...18
19
Just this exit detail...20
And the hut is in front of us...21
Entrance to the winter room...22
The next morning didn't promise a nice day...23
View of Gross... it will be cloudy...24
But we, instead of up to Johannisberg, down to the first crack, and exercises....25
The belay station is set up and ready....26
And the fun begins...27
Johannisberg (3,460 m), so close, yet so far. Unfortunately it will wait for the next time...28
Pulling out of the crevasse..., two were pulling me out29
For them it wasn't as funny as for me....30
Some self-rescue practice with prusiking...31
32
Exercises finished, snack too, winter room tidied up, time to go home...33
For descent we chose the easier variant...34
35
The weather started to deteriorate, we finished in time and headed down...36
Gross... ice falls - all that will come down sooner or later37
We descended the normal path through the tunnels for the descent, the workers grumbled something, but we didn't let ourselves be deterred ....38

From parking lot to Oberwalderhütte accessible for all hikers. Continuation on the glacier drags on and on, softened snow requires extra energy. Glaciers are melting and collapsing literally before your eyes.

Johannisberg (3453 m), Hohe Tauern in Austria, 08. 08. 2014

My view of the ascent at the link below.
'Ania' could have, when posting the ascent in May 2011, written the peak name correctly, at least with a capital letter.

Nice, the title of the post at the top is corrected, but Johannisberg (3463 m) belongs under Hohe Tauern in Austria and not under our Karavanke. I hope the portal editor will move the posts under Hohe Tauern. They were already there and I don't know why they were moved under Karavanke.
Johannisberg (3463 m) in guidebooks, 3453 m in maps.

After a long time back on Pasterze. Sleeping in the winter room at Oberwalderhütte, next day to Johannisberg. Weather wonderful, snow for this time of year little. Visitors almost none, on Sunday on the summit there were 4 of us and three more behind who came from the direction of the bivouac under Gross, and all night some ropes were climbing in the wall of Gross (Palavicini and one couloir to the right of it, could see them with headlamps). Pictures only a couple, because my tech wonder failed again... (Canon, crap, won't buy it again jezenjezenjezen) ...
Happy team at the parking lot, behind in the middle Gross, right Johannisberg ....1
Lower part of Pasterze, actually it's no longer there ...2
After exiting the tunnel we immediately put on short sleeves, it was so hot ...3
Gross, below Pasterze, which visibly disappears year by year ... and here the Canon crap failed ...4

Conditions for hiking ascent excellent. Snow was softened just enough, crampons not needed. Due to strong wind it was damn cold, but visibility fantastic.

Idea "was presented" some 2 weeks before, but due to certain things it hung in the air until the end. Well, in the end according to the original plan and on Saturday we head up. On a summer winter tour cool
Summer temperatures, ski slope far the best this winter.
