Konjščica - Monte Sagran - Sagranberg (1931m)

From Uke we drove to the guesthouse "Pri Gamsu" (Osteria del Camoscio, 1130m). Overnight about a cm of new snow fell, but it didn't worsen driving conditions on the nicely plowed road. From the parking lot straight into the steep slope along the wide, well-packed touring ski track towards the saddle. Most touring skiers went up to Kovk and Lepi vršič, we turned right on the forest road to the saddle Forc. di Fontana Fredda (1693m). There was quite a bit of drifted snow on the saddle. There we turned right again, steep up the western ridge to Konjščica summit. Summit almost snow-free, western ridge has plenty. For us "postholers" it sank to knees and beyond at times, touring skiers had tough snow for descent. Entire western ridge mix of hard and soft crust (gale from two days ago left marks), lower in forest still some powder. On our return skiers already in valley and had left behind scraped terrain. Lower part squeaking under skismrk pogled
In nice winter idyll we postholed but really enjoyed: subler, kofetarca and svicrcool

Nice job describing the path and conditions. Good choice for a Sunday tour, where there was no crowding of 30+ people like on neighboring Kovk and Lepi Vršič mežikanje

As expected, the grassy slopes above the start were well "washed", but snow remnants still allowed us a quite easy ski ascent all the way to the last huts.
Well, of course we knew that higher up a completely fresh batch of snow awaited us. And it wasn't just that; almost a complete package was waiting: golden-yellow sun, vast views spreading over the fog cover, and untouched slopes that themselves invited turns. nasmeh
From the Fontana Fredda saddle, we then climbed to Lepi Vršič (Cima Bella) and there too we found a nice skiable flank that, with a bit of ingenuity, brought us back to the aforementioned saddle. From there, descent along the forest road back to the start. Of course with the obligatory artistic inserts on the firm crust that didn't hold the skier, and lower down the solid skiable combination of wet snow and grass.

Yesterday quite a few people gathered in this area. Since we were a bit late, there was no crowd on the path, quite the opposite. The summits were quite crowded, some with snowshoes, some with skis. First we went to Konjščica-Sagran, then we planned to go to Lepi Vršič, but my skins detached, so we aborted halfway and skied down. Maybe even better, because the western part was less crowded and there was quite a lot of powder. Nice day today too, during the walk the cold wasn't felt at all...Lots of older skiers, which gives hope that this winter joy can be long-lasting...I wouldn't want to just sit in front of the TV in old age.nasmeh

Monte Sagran and Starhand were completely unknown peaks to me until recently, with strange names, and it was hard for me to distinguish between them.
Especially, they are not as visited as M.Cocco and Cima Bella, which of course makes them even more attractive.
On Sunday, in a cold and windy morning on snowshoes towards pl.Dolinzi past the new Rif.Nordio-Defffar hut, where we noticed that all the other predecessors had turned towards Ojstrnik. Not only that. The ski tracks towards the Lom saddle had completely disappeared. And likewise on pl.Dolinza there were no gaz, no tracks. Like an extinct snowy landscape.
Feelings were mixed, we had to search for markers leading towards the forest. After emerging from the forest, again untouched vast whiteness, no one anywhere, only the cold north wind swirling the snow and stirring feelings of wilderness.
At the saddle the decision was easy, this time only Sagran, Starhand will wait.
We pulled our track all the way to the summit, where despite the cold you couldn't help but stop and admire the vast view opening up, although veiled by clouds that additionally enchanted the surroundings.
I was only sorry that the cross with the famous Slovenian inscription was not visible.

Return towards the Forza di Fontana saddle and under Lepi Vršič back to the valley, thus closing the snowshoe loop.

Yesterday the Thursday group of retirees from PD Škofja Loka went on a magnificent tour to conclude the Karnics. There were four peaks just over 1900m. The ascent was about 1000m. You drive to Italy to Tarvisio and then right after Tarvisio. In the village of Ukve, you turn into the Ukovska valley. The road is nice, asphalted, but a bit narrow. The starting point was Osteria del Comoscio - 1130m. We turned left there, and returned on the right. We walk along a steep, partly concreted road past nice weekend houses, also farms and unmowed meadows more than pastures. Around 1600m we split. The better group went left to Kovk and Lepi vršič. The others had an easier path to Konjščica and Starhand. Kovk - Italian Monte Coco is 1941m high. Of course there is a cross up there. Then we descended to the pass and went to the grassy Lepi Vršič - Cima Bella - 1911m. Livestock was grazing there. There is a path to Kovk, to Lepi Vršič you go over the pasture. Our next peak was Konjščica - 1931m or Sagranberg - Italian Monte Sagran. These three peaks are in Italy - we are practically moving near the border - we meet boundary stones. Already from Lepi Vršič we saw our second group, which was already on Konjščica. Our next goal was already in Austria - Starhand - 1965m - our highest peak. The path to the summit is somewhat rocky. The cross is even on the ridge a bit below the summit. We didn't go there. We then met the second group at the spring below Starhand and returned to the starting point of course by another path.
Starting point - Osteria del Comoscio - 1130m.1
Wonderful weather - magnificent views of the peaks.2
3
We walked for almost a good hour or a bit more on a partly quite steep also concreted road.4
Our goals - four peaks.5
The hudourniki are tamed.6
7
There are lots of weekend houses.8
And we also see some high mountain homesteads.9
Here we split into two groups. The better walkers - left group - went to the four peaks, the others to the last two - Konjščica and Starhand.10
Better walkers go towards our first peak - Kovk.11
We go past abandoned pastures - there have been no inhabitants for a long time - only ruins remind of the once beautiful homesteads.12
Towards our first peak - Monte Coco - in Slovenian Kovk.13
Summit of Kovk with a cross - 1941m.14
Our group's fire brigade at the summit of Kovk.15
Then to the grassy Lepi vršič directly across the pasture - there livestock is already grazing.16
Among the cattle there are also horses.17
We move in the area between Italy and Austria - we encounter border stones.18
View of our first goal - Kovk.19
Fire brigade on Lepi Vršič - 1911m.20
Down to our third common goal - Konščica - Sagranberg or Monte Sagran in Italian - 1931m.21

Then to the last peak - Starhand - 1965m, which is already in Austria.26
Past dense growths of rusty gentian.27

A bit rocky.29
At the top of Starhand.30
The cross is here a bit lower to the left on the lower ridge.31
No Mary here either.32
The group fire brigade one was taken at the water below Starhand.33
Down, of course, by another path.34
We went down the marked path 403.35
Past the beautiful alpine pasture Dolnice – 1460 m.36
Hut on the pasture – probably open only on weekends.37
Past the newer guesthouse on our way to the starting point.38
On this path the descent is a bit more demanding.39

In search of the sun we ended up on the border ridge between Italy and Austria. We planned a circular route from Osteria Camoscio above Ukvami to Starhand summit, then ridge traverse to Monte Sagran, descent to Ukve pasture and ascent to Lepi vršič. Wind blew away the wish for nearby Kovk.

Weather mostly as forecast. We expected temperatures below -10°C, but not the real wind and fog. Both appeared suddenly, luckily backpacks have gear for that. This time used all nasmeh.

Whole route great for snowshoes, less for hikers without. Path mix of hard often icy base, wet drifts, crust etc. In fog progressing without terrain knowledge or GPS track can be difficult.

Road from Uke to top parking OK, weekends village takes 5€ for use.
Due to circular variant we leave ponies at parking lot by Camoscio inn1
On foot we continue to the last parking lot. Occasionally path 504 marker is found2
Frost here is capitalized. Even the stream has put on icy clothes3
At last parking turn left to path 507 towards Deffar hut. Road has hard packed snow4
Fairly new Nordia Deffar hut. Probably open on nice weekends based on seen5
We continue to Lom saddle. Here is the border between Italy and Austria6
Starhand planina sleeps winter sleep. We don snowshoes and go towards sun7
Following Karnijski 403. Path mix of all winter joys, snowshoes rule :)8
Already right under Starhand saddle. Somehow turns uphill to eponymous peak9
Summit part. Snow is mix of concrete and powder10
Final chute. Base excellent here, snowshoes bite snow contentedly11
Group on Starhand, last in calm sunny weather :)12
Same peak, cross surprisingly much lower. Probably valley folk see it better from there13
Hmm, Ojstrnik view quite surprise. Wasn't in weather forecast14
Nor better towards Višarje. Fog burst in half hour15
Continuation towards Monte Sagran and Lepi vršič is still sunny.16
However, full winter conditions soon catch up with us. Wind joins the fog and cold.17
Monte Sagran. I take off my gloves for one single photo and in an instant my hands almost freeze stiff.18
We quickly retreat from the summit and count on shelter from the wind lower down among the trees.19
We descend towards Planina Ukve, where fortunately sun joins the wind and cold.20
Winter decorations, while we are in full battle gear :)21
Ridge of Lepi vršič. Hard, icy and above all windy. Cold bites to the bone.22
Tracks of predecessors are snowed over, but the direction is clear. In fog it could be different.23
One more photo at Lepi vršič and the wind quickly blows us down.24
The worst is still ahead of us. The wind has swept the slope bare, it doesn't spare us either.25
In the saddle we meet some hikers who are also not enthusiastic about the conditions.26
View back at the summit just visited.27
Descent to the valley is on packed ground, skied over by countless hikers.28
On maps it is marked as the former village of Kovk. There was also a mine nearby.29
Handy for two-way traffic, especially when there's a crowd :)30
We descend towards the morning starting point ...31
Only just before the end did the wind ease a bit.32
Osteria del Camoscio, locally known as Pri gamsu. The parking lot is right below it.33
GPS tracks hiked. It recorded 13 km and 1200 m elevation gain.34
