Monfalcon di Forni (2453 m)

We left the Padova hut a bit after 6:00. The mountain tops were lit by the first morning sun, the valley towards Cador was shrouded in fog. Initially the ascent follows the path down which we descended from Scodavacca pass the previous afternoon, then the path to Monfalcon di Forni notch (342) branches right, a bit higher the path to Montanaia notch branches right, where we were last week. The ascent is always in shade, so at the top we crossed the notch and warmed up a bit in the sun. The view was beautiful to the east, and also down to bivouac Marchi-Granzotto. After we refreshed a bit we returned over the notch a few meters to the west side, then right we found the little path marked with cairns and faded markers. Soon we were in a wide gully up which we ascended leisurely for a while, then in the upper part of the gully we turned right following markers and climbed to the top, in the ascent direction there are some I degree spots, otherwise no major difficulties. From the top of course magnificent view, even Triglav was visible. We descended in ascent direction and met Željko and Stanko from Reka, who were heading to Cridola but somehow ended up on Monfalcon di Forni. From Monfalcon di Forni notch we went over grassy slope to nearby Busas notch (path 354) down which we descended to lower path and to Giaf hut. We do not recommend this path for ascent at all, because it's all one steep and long scree. At Giaf hut they had some bocce tournament (there's also artificial climbing wall) by footballers of local football club. From the grill it smelled pleasantly, and beer was just right chilled. Followed short descent to the car. Monfalcon di Forni is beautiful mountain, amid even more beautiful mountains, we'll return.

Nice tour, but worth combining into multi-day tour, plenty material around there. Access by car to hut is quite long even for us living by border. The tour itself Igor described nicely, more demanding spots visible on pic 11 and 13 and smell like II to me; no snow crossed (19.7.) anywhere.
