Monte Bruca - 1584 m

bagi21. 12. 2018 10:09:02
This time the idea was ascent through the gorge Vallone Degli Uccelli to the goal Monte Bruca, and descent on the opposite side of the hill to the starting point. We hadn't done this variant yet, so it was all the more interesting nasmeh. The described conditions refer to December 2018.

Ascent :

Path 521 *Sentiero degli Uccelli* was a discovery of the unknown for us. Already at the starting point there's a sign with a warning that doesn't really apply in the initial part. We understood its message only later. Steep slopes and goat path high above the Bird Stream demand full attention and steady step. We were well aware of the depth below us. The most dangerous passages are well secured and so it is until the junction with the Bird Stream. There a different story begins ...

First you need to cross the stream, which can be trouble even at low water level. There are almost no markings anymore, no protections. The stream bed is too deep for shoes, the current strong, suitable rocks for crossing very few. They were iced over on top, which I unwillingly experienced myself zavijanje z očmi. After a successfully performed pirouette in the middle of the stream, I managed to stay dry above the water; only my knee protested for a while due to the hard landing on the rock. At high water level, crossing the stream is mission impossible and the sign at the starting point warns about it. Unfortunately, you realize this only towards the end of the gorge.

Further on, we searched for passages along the bed until the slopes of a huge scree field opened up on the left. There is no visible path here either, so we headed across it via the *most favorable* variant. MISTAKE !!! The scree, luckily frozen, became steeper and steeper. Return would have been even harder and a slip very unpleasant. Pure scree class three, I tell you velik nasmeh. The tedious ascent with the help of all four limbs, low profile and probably even teeth finally delivered us to the flatter part. The left, crumbly gully might have been a better choice, but it didn't appeal to us due to the ice.

Where next ??? Eyes on stalks again. A good soul marked the passages with red lines; you just have to spot them. And so it is until the junction with path 501 much higher up. From here to the turnoff for Monte Bruca, the walking is a completely different tune. The path is maintained, protections impeccable. Without them, the fallen places would be quite annoying. Our goal, panoramic Monte Bruca, is nicely marked, the path to it trodden.

Descent :

Path 501 *Sentiero Bepi della Schiava* delivered us back to the starting point. In comparison to the traversed path, this descent is pure poetry. The renovated former WWI mule track descends smoothly into the valley in numerous zigzags. It is suitable for anyone who wants to ascend to Monte Brizzia or Monte Bruca. At the church just above Pontebbo, we shortened the return via an unmarked shortcut to the left.

Summary :

The stars were favorable to us and we managed to complete the full loop. It is one of those you gladly repeat every few years nasmeh. It is hard to leave you indifferent; the conditions just have to be right.

Coordinates of the starting point (near Pontebbe): 46.510683, 13.317388

Monte Bruca - 1584 m Our direction and additional warning against flash flood waters1
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The beginning is a nice walking introduction2
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Also a sign with the path name3
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The initial gullies are not very exposed, but some icy ones are found4
Monte Bruca - 1584 m In search of the best passage over hard ice5
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The slopes become steeper and steeper6
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Still a view of the valley of Bele before heading into the steep gorge of Ptičji stream7
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Here the walk ends. Ahead the path is highly exposed8
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The entrance is secured by a new cable. Further on they are also renewed9
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Here scree and cable provide a sense of security10
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The path becomes a goat track where one must watch every step11
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Even the goat track occasionally disappears. Without markers and cairns, the direction would be quite questionable12
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The crossing is demanding mainly psychologically, not so much physically13
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The track takes different directions, this time under the rocks14
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Steel cables assist on most problematic passages. Without them, the whole thing would be much harder15
Monte Bruca - 1584 m View back. The path crosses the rocky area16
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Gorge of Ptičji stream17
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Some places have no protection despite great exposure18
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Crossing a landslide, fortunately protected by a steel cable19
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Deep down there is the Ptičji stream20
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Descent on scree terrain21
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Occasionally a nice, traceable track reappears22
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Not much elevation gain in the gorge, the path mostly goes up and down along the best passages23
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Excellent aid for overcoming the rocky step. At the top is a military cavern24
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Fallen trees are also an occasional obstacle, but there are few25
Monte Bruca - 1584 m We have to go down there, right into the bottom of the gorge.26
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Markings from here onwards are almost nonexistent, water also washes away the cairns.27
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Key crossing over the gorge, possible only at low water level. At high water, you can only turn back.28
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Consequence of crossing the stream and the iced rock in its middle.29
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The continuation for some time follows the right bank of the streambed.30
Monte Bruca - 1584 m December decoration.31
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Crossing the stream was necessary once again. A jammed log protected us, but any flood easily carries it away.32
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Streambed in the gorge and huge scree on its left bank.33
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Hard to imagine tens of thousands of cubic meters of gravel. Well, here it is the reality. We plunged into it.34
Monte Bruca - 1584 m We had not imagined such a strenuous scree crossing. To our great luck, it was frozen. Understandably, I couldn't take many photos here :)35
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Look back, but it doesn't show the exceptional steepness of the scree. Perhaps a better crossing in the gully to the right on the photo.36
Monte Bruca - 1584 m All that collapsed into the streambed decades ago.37
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The continuation is shyly indicated by faded red lines.38
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Another look back at the scree.39
Monte Bruca - 1584 m One of the rare official 521 markings in this section of the path.40
Monte Bruca - 1584 m In the past the entire slope in the background collapsed.41
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Finally we reached the junction with path 501. Also here is a warning about the passage through the gorge along path 521.42
Monte Bruca - 1584 m At an altitude of around 1300 m snow greeted us.43
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Path 501, fully arranged and secured.44
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Crossing45
Monte Bruca - 1584 m This passage is also fully secured. Without it there would be considerable difficulties.46
Monte Bruca - 1584 m View back47
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The sun raised the atmosphere to a completely different level than it was in the dark gorge below us48
Monte Bruca - 1584 m There was not much snow, small crampons were not needed either49
Monte Bruca - 1584 m There were still a few annoying fallen passages ahead of us50
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Crossing a fallen section51
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Unfortunately the terrain is sandstone, which nature quickly reshapes52
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Without steel cables it would be quite annoying53
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Turn-off for Monte Bruca54
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The path to the summit is trenched and marked55
Monte Bruca - 1584 m group56
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Monte Bruca is an excellent viewpoint57

Monte Bruca - 1584 m 501 is a pleasant, gentle mule track, built in the First World War61
Monte Bruca - 1584 m A few years ago a large fire destroyed the entire area including the path62
Monte Bruca - 1584 m Today it is completely restored63
Monte Bruca - 1584 m The mule track is occasionally so wide that you can hardly believe it64

Congratulations on this trail!

About the 'bird stream path' there was talk already here.

So the descent path is now fully renovated? Previously it was, as seen from Igor's and my report, horrible! eek velik nasmeh

This landslide area was barely passable anymore back in 2012 when we two hiked there. On top of that, rock towers kept collapsing around us, so we stuck closely to the left edge (looking uphill). But it's hard to imagine how to solve this passage elegantly at all, so it might soon not be passable anymore.

@BananaBronson ... the landslide area looks deceptively flat from below, but it showed its teeth more with every meter eek. Luckily we had at least frozen terrain. In summer I can't imagine crossing there.

But according to your report, the left muddy gully obviously isn't as easily passable as we imagined from above. Option might be a bit further along the streambed and *gentler* traverse. But that's just speculation. The title of your blog *Wild Bird Dance* will be spot on nasmeh. Anyway ... the stories such explorations write are important velik nasmeh.

We did this path yesterday. Most of us rushed into the scree, but had to go back down and climb the gully on the left, which is definitely the best option even though you exit it quite muddy. The scree was ok as long as the slope was in shade, but when we got to the sun the ground softened, and stones started rolling from higher up the slope. I definitely advise against ascending the talus. The left gully is quite passable, but at this time you might run into ice in it.

I don't remember anymore but probably I also took that gully because as far as I remember, I didn't have to crawl on all fours. And that in April, when it's not frozen. Otherwise conditions three years ago were probably different, since the landslide is a living thing.

And compared to what awaited me on the still unrenovated path 501, it wasn't the worst either.
