Monte Cit and Monte Cit di Dentro

Probably few have heard of these two Cits, as well as the village of San Leopoldo in the Kanalska Valley. Nevertheless, I ended up on these summits too (Karnian wanderings bear part of the blame), which in themselves are nothing special, they don't even boast any decent height, and both are wooded. I park in the eastern part of the village under the motorway, plenty of space, and the path start is right there. Following the markers under the motorway, then I cross the bike path arranged on the old railway line and climb up the hill along the gully on the right. The first half hour is the rockiest on the whole path, I ascend among some dwarf pines, and even those have been attacked by pine processionary. Then follows a trail through very varied terrain, grasses too in between, among fallen and still standing storm-felled trees, wonderful views all around, interesting is also Šinauc (Monte Scinuaz), which I hope will come next, although no marked path to it. The markers have faded quite a bit, but the trail is easy to follow. So I reach M. Cit, since there's still time I continue in a slight descent, then up again, the path is quite good, but it's clear that very few walk here, so after a good half hour I reach the last Cit too, here the path goes down towards the Barizza saddle and on to Mokrine. Enough for me, I climb to point 1555 m, from where the view is somewhat better, then back to the marked path and slowly to the valley. Quite solitary, here and there I stumble upon remains of some trenches and small fortifications-observation posts. Otherwise today still completely dry and pleasantly warm.

Viharnik on the seventh picture of Triglav is exactly the same as on my fourth picture, only the pines around have grown well by now.

We also ended up up there this weekend, on Monte Cit. There are really very few visitors, but views along the path itself are wonderful. The summit is wooded, it has a viewpoint. The path is very varied, real wilderness. The military fort on Šinavec is visible very well too, and nice greeting Majda.velik nasmeh

Path 523 from San Leopoldo to Monte Cit will slowly be overgrown by time. Less visible than years ago and very poorly marked. Cairns are a great help, only not everywhere. Just below the summit the official passage over exposed rocks is scraped bare. No protection and a slip there would surely end badly. The unused alternative goes up the ridge, but that's not praiseworthy either.

Path information contradicts itself. On CAI sites *Sentiero n.523* is fully passable, at the start their notice about closure of the section from Monte Cit to the junction with path 501. In reality not even to that summit is the path safe anymore (state Dec 2018). GPS track available from me.

Coordinates of the start in San Leopoldo: 46.510948 13.348672

Start in San Leopoldo, right below the motorway1
Start along the overgrown path right under the viaduct2
Here is the first puzzle. Path goes first left along the gully, then crosses right at suitable spot3
Pontebba in the background4
Path initially crosses poorly marked rocky area. Cairns are very helpful here5
Decades ago fire raged here. Traces still visible today6
Without them continuation would be questionable in many places. More cairns than official markers7
No one cleared fire aftermath. Fallen logs must be bypassed somehow8
Everywhere still bare trunks, fire monuments9
Time brings its changes. Young growth will become mighty trees in decades10
In the background the Montaža range11
Riddle!!! The telegraph insulators are probably still from the First World War12
Before the trickiest spot just below the summit13
The passage has collapsed to bare rock and the consequences of slipping would probably be tragic14
We continued straight up the ridge, but there is no reliable path here either15
Part of the rockfall which we bypassed to the left on the ridge16
Remains of a military observation post just below the summit17
Monte Šinavc and the upper station of the former gondola18
Company :)19
Just before the most demanding part of the descent path20
The variant bypassing the problematic passage is not exactly a stroll either21
Here to the left of the ridge are the greatest difficulties of the entire path22

The impassability notice mentioned as being at the path start is also at the junction of paths 501 and 523.
