Monte Ferarra (2258)

Starting point is the central parking lot below Rifugio Pordenone at the end of Val Cimoliana.

Initially still some road-like section, then we reach the scree, markings for path 370 appear in between. After about an hour we leave the long scree fields of Val Sciol Demont and turn right. The small landslide has already been repaired and they've nicely built a path, which higher up turns into spruce forest, above it larches and ever better views, especially those across the valley to Spalti di Toro and Monfalcone. At the indistinct saddle Forc. della Lama there are no signs for continuing to the summit, the marked path goes on to Sella Savalons and down to the former pasture Bregolina. Of course we check it out and return to Lama, then directly up the NW slope to the forepeak and then to the main summit. The little path is marked with red dots, as is usual in these mountains.

Views magnificent, so we take quite some time for a break. Descent by the ascent route.

Over the initial scree fields of Val Sciol Demont from the parking there are a couple of more or less trodden variants and all are easily passable. The main one runs more along the left side of the valley. When the valley narrows, the passage, which from there on is well marked, is clearly visible and leads right onto the wooded slope. At first the larches are still mixed with spruces and still in autumn dress, towards the Lama saddle now you walk on a soft golden-brown carpet. The branch-off left to the summit is not marked but trodden and clearly visible, cairns and here and there red lines and dots reliably show the way. For access to the summit in current conditions no winter gear is needed, although part of the path is permanently in shade. Obviously there wasn't much snow in this part of the Karnic Alps; only a little white on the top of Cima dei Preti. Of course with such weather conditions the views carry far across the Piave valley to the white Dolomite peaks. But the views to the Spalti di Toro and Monfalcone groups are no less interesting, among which the famous Campanile stands out. On the way back a little detour to the idyllic pasture Roncada, where the shepherd's hut has been converted into a bivouac. Beautiful places, but obviously you can't live off beauty alone, which you realize when driving through Cimolais, as it gives you a slight chill seeing all those closed house windows.

The road into Val Cimoliana after last year's flood is not yet repaired, so from Pian Fontane to the parking under Pordenone hut higher clearance is welcome. On weekends and all August you need to pay 6€ entrance fee, in small print it says they let only 200 vehicles into the valley daily. Parco delle Dolomiti Friulane is under Unesco, so things are organized. Parking outside designated areas can be expensive.
Start of the tour to Ferraro needs to be found as the trail on scree is poorly visible. Once you hit it, no problems. Where you cross to the other side of the stream, there's a pole in a large cairn in the middle of the stream, and in between larger visible-from-afar cairns. From the head to Forcella Lama saddle the path is exemplarily marked, further to the summit cairns and rare red bolts. The trail is nicely traceable, the entire ascent from valley to summit undemanding. On return we detoured to Casera Bregolina Grande and then to Casera Roncada. All day we met no one, only lots of marmots around Bregolina. Wonderful tour above beautiful valley, fairytale world and even more fairytale surrounding mountains. From the summit saw a lot and far, only Pelmo shyly hid its face in clouds.

After evening shower in the morning we didn't feel like looking for shortcuts, but when the path exits the forest onto vast scree all variants possible. Before path 370 turns right into forest there's plenty of water. Soft trail leads to the pass, minimal descent and second saddle where left branch and pathlet to summit clearly visible. On descent we extended there to Bregolina pasture and later to Roncada alp. Tour under mustache if you're already therevelik nasmeh
