Monte Fleons - Raudenspitze (2507m)

From Forni Avoltri we drive into the Degano valley to the marble quarry. Then we continue on foot along the supply road closed to public traffic towards the lower still active Fleons pasture, where the road ends, a pleasant path leads past the upper abandoned Fleons pasture and to the Giogo Veranis saddle, also Ofnet loch (2011 m) as it is the border saddle between Italy and Austria. 10 minutes lower stands the Austrian hut Hochweissteinhaus, we turn towards our goal. A fairly good trail ascends nicely, secured with cable in some places, somewhat exposed in places as the path mostly runs left or right along the ridge, about 7-8 times we cross from Italy back to Austria and vice versa, we overcome the last few meters of steep ascent and we are on the very panoramic border summit. Surprisingly no wind on the summit itself, although lower at the ridge crossings it was quite windy from the north side. In the logbook from 2006 we don't find Slovenes. We take almost an hour for panoramic views of mostly familiar mountains, then descend the same path back to the saddle, to both pastures, from the lower Fleons one we head to the nearby Sissanis pasture which we find also abandoned, only a few horses were grazing there. We descend the steep road to the starting point. Near the quarry there is also a fountain for famous Italian bottled water, but a bit later I preferred a beer. Beautiful valley, which will be even more beautiful when the larches turn yellow or in winter on ski touring from Sesis saddle under Monte Peralbo.

Very beautiful landscape, surrounded by high peaks and also just right wide and not too steep for possible avalanches. Great Igor!smile

Parked at the marble quarry, where I was surprised by quite a crowd. Panic was unnecessary, on the summit there were only four of us, and quite to ourselves. Up the steep cart track past the junction towards Sissanis saddle to the lower Fleonis pasture, there meeting countless sheep, and on past the upper pasture to Giogo Veranis saddle. Up to there easy with poles, even a bit further on the Austrian side, where the grass was wet and slippery, terrain quite exposed. A bit higher back to the Italian side, also steep and wet grass all the way to the ridge, where I stowed the poles. Then pure joy all the way to the top. A bit on this side, a bit on that side of the ridge, alternating walking and scrambling, some more difficult and quite exposed spots. The higher I got, the worse the weather, and I reached the summit together with fog and clouds. Feeling on top superb, despite limited views, the surroundings are familiar to me and I could visualize well with eyes closed, meanwhile reliving many beautiful things I've experienced in these parts in past years. Lately it's harder and harder to get back down, today I had to cajole myself quite a bit. Descent was faster and easier, as the grass was dry, and downhill usually goes a bit faster than up. At the good shepherd or shepherdess I sat a bit more, then it wasn't far to the lower pasture, where I again admired the countless sheep now having well-deserved afternoon rest. Real sheep siesta. The shepherd dog wasn't happy with me, good there was a double fence between us. Already near the car, where there's a water intake and a tap by the path, I quenched my thirst and refreshed, soon after already heading home. Wonderful, really unique trip, Carnic expanses are real balm for soul and body nasmeh
