Monte Peralba (2694)

Since the Karnians don't want to come to us, we had to go and check it out there. Today on Monte Peralba, broad summit above Sappada, via ferrata Santor. Good choice for an introduction to this beautiful mountain paradise, but honestly, the drive from Ljubljana is longer than the hike if that's the only goal. Today it was the only goal, but it's true that the weather turned bad in the afternoon and it was already thundering at one o'clock and soon after pouring like crazy. The ferrata is short, not too demanding (description on this website), but descent is possible either along the ridge or along the path named after the current pope, which is not demanding. On the way is hut Calvi, open and friendly; just above it, it's worth seeing the open-air cavern museum at the foot of Chiadenis, and at the bottom, to go to the source of the Piave River. If the weather allows, of course, also the ascent to Chiadenis itself, which offers a nice ferrata. I'll return.nasmeh

The ferrata has the name Sartor, the descent path is named after the previous pope John Paul II. and not the current one, the descent variant is the western ridge, which I don't recommend for descent.

For the weekend my wife and I joined a group led by a guide from Gorenjska to explore the Carnic Alps for two days. On Saturday we first headed to the more easily accessible summit Monte Avanza. Quickly mists started chasing over the summits, not looking promising. Still we continued to the top and reached it in fog that deprived us of nice views. The next goal was the summit Monte Chiadenis, up the harder ferrata and down a bit easier. As we approached the ferrata entrance it quickly darkened and a thunderstorm hit us. There followed a plan change and descent to the Calvi hut, where we waited for the thunderstorm to pass. The weather improved quickly and in about an hour the rocks were dry. We decided to head to the Monte Chiadenis summit via the easier ferrata and descend the same way. When we had about half the ferrata behind us, the weather started turning bad again and the guide's decision was descent back to the hut. This summit wasn't meant for us today. Until the next morning several thunderstorms passed and early Sunday morning didn't look good either. Slowly the mists dispersed and it hinted at least a few hours of good weather. We headed to the highest summit in the area and the second highest in the Carnic Alps, Monte Peralba via ferrata Sartor. The ferrata is nice, well protected and not too demanding. After the ferrata there follows a fairly easy path to the summit, which offers very picturesque views around. This was followed by descent via the path of Pope John Paul II. All around there are visible countless traces and monuments of human folly from World War I. When we returned to the hut, mists started chasing over the summits again and hinting that thunderstorms were approaching.
I must also mention the very nicely arranged Calvi hut with sanitary facilities that even a hotel wouldn't be ashamed of, and very friendly staff.
We headed to the cars and drove a bit further to see the source of the Piave river.
There followed a descent on a very steep and winding road to the valley, where we also viewed a very interesting village.
We headed towards Slovenia full of nice feelings and impressions from a very nice tour, accompanied by thunderstorms that didn't get to us in the cars.
A corner really worth visiting, you won't regret it.

For the start of rambling in the Carnic Alps, which due to bad weather was unexpectedly short, we decided to climb Monte Peralbo. The day before the ascent we drove in the evening hours to the parking below the Calvi hut and slept in the car. On arrival rain was falling, which finally stopped in the late night hours. The morning was clear, so we headed towards the Calvi hut and then towards ferrata Sartor. Already at the entrance to the ferrata we noticed that the rocks were very wet and water was running on them, but this didn't particularly hinder the tour. The ferrata is not too demanding, at some places belay is recommended, and some arm strength is needed. Unfortunately, after nine o'clock mists started moving along the mountain slopes, covering the nice views. We returned via the easier path past the Sesis pass. The next day we planned to do the ascent to Monte Chiadenis, but due to the difficulty we later didn't decide on that tour. We returned to the Calvi hut and descended further to the Sorgenti del Piave hut, where the Piave river source is. There followed a short walk to the starting point, then we drove into the valley and viewed the town of Sappada and the hamlet Cima Sappada. After the sightseeing we drove back to the town of Forni Avoltri and turned left to the village Collina. We slept in Rifugio Tolazzi and set the ascent towards Wolayersee and further for the next day.

Up ferrata Sartor to Monte Peralbo and descent via Pope Wojtyla path. Sometimes ferrata Sartor split into two branches shortly before the end of the cables, today the right one is abandoned. The descent gully of the pope's path is completely worn.

Hi,

Has anyone perhaps been around these parts recently? If so, what are the conditions like?

Thanks and best,

The decision came, I set off at night, 4 hours drive and arrive at the start below Monte Peralbo, up Cresta Ovest. Descend the normal path and head to another grassy summit Monte Oregone, where I take a longer rest and sleep. Views are excellent all the time. I had three longer breaks and walked slowly. Midday, while most were still going up, I descended back to the start and slowly headed home via Sella Nevea, Bovec, almost 500km on gas.

Up the west ridge, down the usual Pope John Paul II path. The paths are without special features, some snow along the descent path, easily avoided. The weather favored us, only the wind on the ascent blew right through us. No one ahead of us uphill, masses coming towards us downhill. Road to Piave source also fine. Great tour nasmeh

Monte Peralba at 2694m second highest in Carnic Alps after Coglians. Located at Dolomites threshold - their west part south of main border ridge Austria-Italy, above Piave source. Due to strategic position during WWI battlefield on Tyrolean front, testified by numerous fort remains and trenches. Mountain so beautiful even Pope John Paul II climbed it 20.7.1988. We went up ferrata Sartor down Pope's, and descending to Sesis saddle immediately noticed wonderful Pic Ciadenis spire, nothing left but climb to summit and then Monte Ciadenis via ferrata delaguera and down SE ridge.

I think we should also include Cima dei Preti 2706m, although some count those mountains down there among the Dolomites

mirank, I also think Cima dei Preti is part of the Carnic Alps, or rather their prealpine world, where they classify the Friulian Dolomites:

When Tomaž contacts you mid-week for a trip, there was no talk of not going at all, ... and especially given the weather that was forecast for that end, I have no words, simply awesome, ...

Trip from mid-July 2023.

Ascent via normale, no special features, easy-moderate. Definitely nice mountain. Descent via ferrata B/C to Rifugio Pier Fortunato Calvi. First part of descent: need to be careful on the rock slabs. Such a slab can be large, but when stepping on it it might slip or if seeking a hold in it it goes against you, not secured.
Lower part is ferrata, one part C. Hut on very high level, well-arranged, friendliness,..

Asphalt road to around 1800m!

Last day, before departure also to the highest above Sappada.
We had luck that the road was open, because they renovated it in the last days. Of course there were also signs for traffic ban. nasmeh
Here you really comfortably drive very high to parking at cca 1820m (free).
Then by road to hut F. Calvi and further via ferrata Sartor to the top. Hut they open on Saturday.
View was again more so-so because of mists, which were welcome for refreshment. Mountain is really mighty and reflection of some time that wasn't so friendly as now, when it's given to us, but we don't know to appreciate it.
We descended via path of Pope John Paul II.
