San Daniele del Friuli-Lago di Ragogna-Lago di Cornino-Cornino-Forgaria nel Friuli-Monte Prat-Pinzano al Tagliamento-Ragogna-San Daniele del Friuli (26.9.2023)
The Friulian lowland is perfect for cycling trips. Lowland like a plain, say, above it the Carnic hill country and mountains, where it's a joy to pedal. Today's trip took me through places where I've driven who knows how many times already on mountaineering tours, also trips, and never thought about being here on a bike someday. I started and ended the trip in San Daniele del Friuli, next to the park above the hospital there's a large free parking lot, not far to the centro storico on foot. The route took me past Lago di Ragogna and Lago di Cornino to Forgaria, from where I had a long and steep ascent to the Monte Prat plateau, where at the neat little church, under which there's a fairy-tale pond, was the goal of today's trip. Divine weather, optimal road conditions, almost no traffic, Tuesday of course, actually couldn't be nicer. During the break there was enough time for memories, for plans no, there were enough of the first. Many times on Monte Cuar, on Cuar and Flagjel, from this and that side, once beautiful trips, today precious memories. Descent or rather downhill I did to Forgaria nel Friuli on the same road, there I turned towards Pinzano al Tagliamento. Not for the first time while coasting into the valley I noted common points of ski touring and cycling namely the longer and higher you push uphill, the more and deeper the coasting down. Never enough of the latter, of the first, that is uphill pedaling, often quite quickly too much. From Pinzano to Ragogna I had to slog, just the energy bar at the very start of the trip is simply too little. The local bar in Ragogna had everything I needed, fed and quenched I easily managed that little bit more to San Daniele, there for grand finale still an honorary lap around the centro storico. It was really enjoyable, places through which the route led me so beautiful, I can hardly wait for a reprise...
