Monte Stivo

Monte Stivo is a 2059 m high peak that concludes the longer ridge between the Arca valley and the Rovereto valley towards Lake Garda. The ascent to it runs from several directions; we chose the one at Passo Bordale due to the circular variant.

Parking is available in front of the inn at the pass. The best way to get here is from the Rovereto valley. There is also a variant from the Arca suburb, which in practice means an extremely narrow and steep asphalted road, popular among cyclists. Garmin will almost certainly choose this route from the Arca direction because it is the closest access to the starting point for it. We returned via it and do not recommend it.

Markings for Monte Stivo have the number 623 and the first ones are right next to the inn at the pass. The start of the path is pleasant for warming up and we walked almost horizontally for a long time. Later the path starts to climb up to the Madonninia pass. Here a long ridge traverse all the way to Monte Cornetta offers itself. Some other time nasmeh. At the saddle the path turns left towards the Monte Stivo ridge. A bit higher there is also a junction to the Rifugio Marchetti hut; we took the direct one to the summit. It is also an excellent viewpoint and the view reaches far around.

We returned via path 608 past the already closed Marchetti hut and descended with countless switchbacks to the Malga Stivo pasture. From there a poorly marked cart track leads almost to the village of Le Prese. Just before it an unmarked but well-trodden path lured us to the left, which is moreover marked on the map. Naively we expected a nice traverse of the Monte Stivo slopes in the ideal line, but practice showed otherwise. The black dashed path on the map soon lost its beauty and turned into an overgrown path more imaginary than traceable. Without Garmin's help our return would probably have been quite, quite delayed. We were probably the first Slovenians struggling around here velik nasmeh.

Everything ended happily and we treated ourselves to a well-deserved refreshment at the inn. This was followed by the return to our temporary home, this time via the already mentioned road over the pass towards Bolognano and Arca. This was an adventure of a special kind that quite reminds of the road from Učja to Resia, only this one is much steeper and longer.

Some useful data:

Starting point: Passo Bordala … 45°54'26.1"N / 10°58'40.1"E (Google Maps_Android)
Path length: 13 km / Ascent on path: 990 m
Duration: 4.30 hours

@miri ... thanks nasmeh. We did this during my delayed vacation, because peaks at home got snow too early. So we chose more *maritime* option with nicer temperatures velik nasmeh

On the last day of hiking we went to the 2,059 m high Monte Stivo. We started from Santa Barbara pass on path st 608b. Nice panoramic path with views of the town Arca and Lake Garda. Return by the same path.
