Monte Tuglia (1931 m)

On Sunday it was snowing and above 2000 m, sometimes even lower, some snow fell. It was necessary to choose a suitable target and also the weather. After preparation we realized that we wouldn't be late at all if we went to the Carnic Alps at noon. Starting point: biathlon center (Centro Biathlon) between Forni Avoltri and Cima Sappada. Parking lot empty, markings poorer there, so among the crowd of roads (cross-country tracks) we barely found the road with marking, a bit higher we reached the trail with mark 227 (diretta Malg. Tuglia). The path didn't look trodden, also quite a few trees fallen across the path, higher up real windthrow and forestry cableway. When we broke through all obstacles we stepped onto the alpine pasture area and on some tree found a sign warning of fallen trees since 2008. On the pasture we met three workers diligently renovating the hut; when we asked them about continuing to the top, they didn't know how to answer. We walked a bit under the base and found a small trail (sentierino), of course not marked, the initial part of the ascent was still fairly gentle, though steeply uphill, followed a section of quite steep grass (in wet high slip risk), in the summit part some scrub, no major issues on the ascent. The view from there among more known surrounding peaks was of course superb. From the top we descended to the pasture and back to the start on the supply road.

Since 2019 the path from the malga to the summit is secured, called Sentiero attrezzato Carlo Ceconi, difficulty EEA. Named in memory of mountain rescue member and caver Carlo Ceconi who died that year in an avalanche on Monte Coglians. 200 m of cables ease locally the dog-steep ascent, self-securing if you need/want it is a bit awkward because the cables are at ground level. Otherwise in these grassy steeps there is no way.

Started in Cima Sappada, a bit shorter than from the lower chairlift station. On footpath and a bit of road to Malga Tuglia, there behind the malga across swampy area sprinkled with fresh cowpats, to the base where I hit the secured path. Knee-grinder to the forepeak, then fairly sharp and exposed ridge(let) to main summit, cables all the way, where big wooden peg with climbing rope. Also in memory of Ceconi. Views ohoho and ahaha, even some uh found, of course dolce far niente while gazing and soul-tying, then down out. On descent here and there feeling that I would step into abyss, almost, closer to alp hotter it got. There crowd, always annoying for me, so no stop further to forest, pleasant cool shade. Halfway to Cima Sappada nice refreshment in cold brook by path, there coffee, strudel and Coke because sugar dropped hard from efforts. All-day parking free, coffee+strudel+Coke = 8.30€.

Cool and nice, recommend nasmeh
