Yesterday my wife and I did the mentioned tour. The start from the parking lot to the Calvi hut is nothing but a walk through sparse forest and then pastures. From the hut to the start of the Sartor ferrata is a well-trodden marked trail, the ferrata itself is not too demanding, so in two hours we were at the top. Views of the Carnic Alps and partly Dolomites kept us almost an hour at the summit. Descent by the eastern normal route is about 150m long through gully and ledge on the north side filled with hard snow where the ice axe was a very useful tool. The rest of the path is normally passable. Well, at the Sesis saddle (despite an easier pace) it seemed too early to return so we decided for a repeat traverse of Chiadenis via both ferratas which are more difficult than the one on Peralba. Let me mention that on Saturday (according to the Calvi hut keeper) it snowed 15 min like in winter and the temperature dropped below zero, nothing strange due to altitude. Good luck all repeaters.

No more snow in the gully on the "eastern normal" but still some mud. On the ferrata on Chiadenis (above Calvi hut) some pulled pitons but can pass slowly (down, up easier because holds and steps everywhere in plenty). Good luck!

Peralba is one of the nicer Karnic mountains, although already on the border with Dolomites which are almost within reach from there. Paths to it are short as start is high (1800m). We drove up from Vrh of the sunny valley. Started at Piave Spring Hut, then turned to path to west ridge, first trail flat and even a bit down, then steeply up. Soon out of forest so views first class, path itself nothing special, we did it with poles and enjoyed beautiful views fully. After less than 2 hours at summit, below at Calvi hut rooster crowing merrily. Short stop, then descent via Pope's path to Sessis saddle, then under Pic Chiadin our second goal. There dropped packs and up marked route with pitons to top. Together we concluded difficulties not exceeding good I grade. Again short stop and descent to Sessis saddle which we skipped turning right soon to path on east side to ferrata entry to Monte Chiadenis. This time longer stop, ate something, then after 33 min at top. Descended SW ridge fully secured with cable, lower part cable and chain combo. Then visit Calvi hut some liquid refreshment, on to Piave spring. Exceptionally posting as someone reading forum wants timeline. Whole loop in 6 hours with all stops. Lots of photos, lots of views, lots of talking.

From friendly Calvi hut via secured Piepo Sartor path to summit, then descent "Pope's path" (some snow in gully, bypass below possible) to Sesis saddle and on under Chiadenis, ascent to top and down to Calvi hut. Then to Piave Spring hut

Yesterday, August 1st, I went with PD Škofja Loka to the Western Carnic Alps to the so-called pope's mountain, 2694 m high Monte Peralba. We went by personal cars because the road to Rifugio Sorgenti del Piave is a narrow asphalt road with small turns, forbidden for buses and vans. From Cima Sopadda to the alp, no buses. We drove to the parking lot of the alp and headed to the Salvi hut at 2164 m. Around the hut, a rooster was crowing merrily. They have a large chicken coop, so fresh eggs here. Then we continued to the Passo Sesis saddle, where there is a crossroads. Left to Santor ferrata, right the pope's path. Pope John Paul II climbed it in 1988. Signs inform about his path, but sadly I didn't take photos as camera worked only in ferrata. Group split at saddle. Most hikers chose ferrata. Few real ferratas at home, so no comparison. Climbed only two last in Dolomites. This one long, no rest. Steep on excellent rock nonstop almost to top. Cables very new. Some parts few foot holds, need good pull up. No real difficulties, just start before cables awkward jump, then pull on swinging cable to real ferrata start. Climbing real pleasure. Rated A and B. Summit crowded. Companions via easier pope path already there. Cross and wish bell, even logbook. Signed in. Didn't see Žiga, didn't ask. Had snack, took photos and back via pope path. Pope path not easy. Gully part secured with old rusty cables. Path quite scree-covered. On return stopped at Piave spring, friendly inn 500 m from parking. Drank earned beer. Then long way home with obligatory stop in Dovje at Aljažek. Nice day, want many more.

Velkavrh, somehow you have bad luck! Once the camera fails, second time the map

Halfway I did take photos. I have a new camera and am learning to handle it.
