Today David and I visited the Carnic Alps. In Forni Avoltri turn right, reach the village of Collina and then the hut - rifugio Tolazzi (1,350 m). Here we parked the car, put on skis and headed along the snowy road towards the Marinelli hut, which is at 2,122 m. Because it was windy, we just put on crampons here and continued towards Pic Chiadin (2,302 m), which is left of the hut. Conditions were good, as there were a few cm of new snow on a firm base, only strong gusts of wind were a bit tricky. View from the top fantastic, and the view into the valley is interesting too. Skiing in the lower part was also fine, although the snow was a bit crusty. Beautiful places, pleasant company, friendly in the hut......today I'll sleep like an angel !

What beautiful pics! The landscape is really cinematic, it grabs you to just hop in the car and drive off And your vivid description of hill wandering is always, really always, something special Not just read, you also feel everything described. People like you put the icing on such a forum, let alone people around you! Keep going

@MajaO wrote: I'll do my homework by next time, what these people actually live on. They don't get rich from that. Because you probably can't live off beautiful mountains and great views here either. Yeah interesting, in these areas there's practically no industry, here and there some craftsman, some small tourism (Sauris, Zoncolan and villages below it, Sappada is of course already better organized for tourism) otherwise farming, the alps are interestingly still mostly very much alive. Many commute to bigger places for work, otherwise it's quite a sad sight of huge number of houses in otherwise beautiful villages that have shutters closed almost all year, they open them only for a week or two over the summer. Most people sought whiter bread in wider Europe and even across the pond. That's the fate of these Carnic villages, many houses are for sale too, but only for weekends, if anyone buys at all.

Nice explanation from Igor about the locals in Carnia. Similar story of permanent residents and weekenders using houses only in summer, is also in the Ligurian hills. There they turn small stone houses into weekend homes and visit them mostly in summer months. Price of buildings in hilly areas is ridiculously low compared to the city, so even yogis have bought some houses there. But I don't understand and never will the mentality of most people (including us Slovenes), who rush at all costs to cities, maybe only 30km away from much nicer and health-friendlier rural green surroundings. Quality of life at 600m and above is incomparably better regarding ventilation and air, fruit and other produce, possibilities of walking in forests and hills, rivers (swimming), cycling, horse riding, friendliness of locals (neighbors), peace and connection with nature. Even some good black bread is still baked in remote valleys in the old way in ovens, although old people used to say to the lazy one: If you've quarreled with white bread, you'll starve on black.

Rifugio Tolazzi - rifugio Marinelli - Pic Chiadin Today we climbed this 2,302 m high hill in the Carnic Alps. You can keep skis on for 50 m, after 150 m there's a junction of two paths: both lead to malga Morareet. We turned right uphill, along the trail that in the first part goes through the forest. Back we went along the wider path, because it's more skiable. Only in one section had to take off skis. Beyond the hut the world opens up and you feel a special silence. This year there's somewhat less snow and here and there you see branches and scree, but definitely enough for really pleasant skiing. Well, we climbed to the Marinelli hut. From there we turned left and continued to the top. Occasionally the base was a bit icy, but covered with fresh snow. At the top fog enveloped us, but luckily visibility was still adequate when we skied back to the valley on very nice skiable snow. Sometimes during the ascent you wonder, what's all this effort for.......but then, when returning to the valley, you get the answer too!
