We slept in the Zoia hut in Campo Moro at 1990 m and set off on an 8-hour hike to the Marco e Rosa hut, the starting point for the ascent to Mt. Bernina. Beautifully laid-out path past fragrant meadows adorned with blackberries, through larch forest, past streams, of which there are really an endless number here, took us first to the Marinelli Bompardieri hut. From there a glacier crossing and steep ascent up the couloir to the Marco e Rosa hut, which nestles at a respectable 3609 m. The evening and chat with mountaineers with the same wish as us passed in doubts whether the next morning would allow the summit push or not, as the forecast was very bad. Shortly after arrival, rain started and whistling around the hut corners; at night it intensified, and in the morning we realized the forecast was right. A real snow and wind storm hit us, so we used the day for rest and knot-making practice. Next day we woke to a clear but windy morning. We decided for the ascent. Sadly no summit due to conditions (icy ridge). About 100 m below the summit we decided for descent. We descended to the hut, then via ferrata, which was also heavily adrenaline-tinted due to conditions, down to the valley. The summit waits till next time.
