Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m

Piz Ciaval is the direct neighbor of Tofana in the Dolomite group Fanes and our goal this time, which we tried to connect into a circular variant. The whole thing was initially planned as an easier hike before the afternoon rain, but it turned out to be a bit bigger bite velik nasmeh.

For persistence we were rewarded with exceptionally little rain and plenty of new stuff in these remote, poorly visited areas right next to Tofana. We made a beautiful loop around the Dolomite towers, marveled many times and at many things and enjoyed the day nasmeh. More in the photo story …

Coordinates starting point ( Passo Falzarego ) : 46.519526, 12.008710

Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Not particularly cold morning at Falzarego Pass1
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Our path will follow the 401/402 markers for a long time yet2
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Up there, Rif. Lagazuoi hut and the upper gondola station bask in the morning sun3
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m View from the other side as well4
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Following the 401 markers into Val Travenanzes valley, which cuts deeply between Tofane and Fanes5
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m In these towers runs the famous Tomaselli ferrata. Our goal is much further ahead in the same ridge group6
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Tofana hid in the fog the whole time, but the saddle with Rif. Giussani hut occasionally shyly revealed itself7
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Geological fault *Tera Roses*, by which the Val Travenanzes valley is known. Here everything is full of small streams.8
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m View back at one of the larger patches of red earth. The material is pure scree, despite abundant moisture not at all muddy.9
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m From Passo Falzarego to the lowest point we descended almost 500m. We continued along path 17 towards Passo Casale. Now only uphill :)10
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m We didn't even dream of what we were embarking on :) Our summit is towards the right side, vast scree fields lead to it.11
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Torre Fanes right by the path.12
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Uffff …. we have already climbed all this. Deep below is the valley we descended into from Passo Falzarego.13
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m There is no end to the scree fields. To the first rocks we covered almost 800m of them. But the path over them is solidly built and not difficult.14
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Only just below the Casale saddle do the first rocks appear15
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m …. of unusual shapes16
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m .… already slightly mystical in the fog17
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Casale saddle, junction with the former military connection between individual posts. Here runs the variant of the Dolomite high route Via alta 118
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Time for a short break in the shelter. In the fog it was quite cold despite the uphill walk19
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m On this side of the saddle, the comfortable military path continues20
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Even to our summit leads a comfortable path21
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Piz Ciaval, direct neighbor of Tofan22
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m From the summit we returned a little to the approach saddle. The fog cleared and a part of the scree we had crossed was revealed23
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m We continue on the comfortable path towards bivouac Della Pace24
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Monte Ciastel. The bivouac is located in its shelter at 2758 m25
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m They have nicely placed the bivouac in the rock face of the Dolomite tower. The entire area around it is full of remnants from the First War and it was certainly once a military base here26
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m The very spacious bivouac has a few bunks and a huge common area27
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m View in the other direction28
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m We continued the descent, still following the markers 1729
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Pizes de Furcia Rossa. In their slopes runs the eponymous via ferrata, as a continuation of the path from the bivouac. All together it is a military path30
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m We, however, continue towards the valley in the direction of the Ucia de Gran Fanes hut. We turn before it31
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Right next to the path lie incredibly large boulders32
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m … another one33
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Oh dear … in the distance it's already brewing, but the time is just after noon. That's also why we didn't go to the Tofane34
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m The path finally turns in the right direction for the return. Heavenly chefs are also at work in this direction.35
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Well, at least we aired out the rain gear :)36
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m We switched to path 20B, up which we climbed to yet another pass. This time Forcello di Lech.37
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Finally at the pass and the rain has eased. Here the path turns steeply downhill.38
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m path marker39
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m The descent promised plenty of fun on scree, but reality was quite the opposite.40
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Never encountered such an exemplary descent on distinctly unpleasant material. Pure promenade :)41
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Photo taken looking back. This is how they arranged the path on steep scree.42
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m We've already gotten used to it. After every proper descent a nice long ascent awaited us :)43
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Little lake Lech de Lagacio at the lowest point of descent. From here we continue on path 20.44
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m View back. We descended through that gap.45
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Towards Lagazuoi pass the ascent is long and steady. The gradient is pleasant enough for not overly tiring walking.46
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m Almost at the goal. Meant as a morning tour before rain, it turned into a full-day one. Good we didn't go to Tofane. Would have been way too short :)47
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m View back. It started drizzling again, but we were already safe. We had incredible luck with the rain :)48
Piz Ciaval (Monte Cavallo) - 2912 m GPS track of the hiked path. It came to 26 km of path and 2200 m of elevation gain49

Years pass, they say nothing. As if in the blink of an eye, five years have passed since our first visit to this panoramic mountain. First time via the strenuous variant from Val Travenanzes, this time via the easier one from Capanna Alpina. Monte Cavallo is a rewarding goal in both cases nasmeh.

The summit was of strategic importance in the First World War, which is evident from the numerous remains of caverns and wooden shelters. This includes the well-visited Bivacco della Pace shelter below Monte Castello, built on the remains of the original buildings. We've been here three times already and it's always full of visitors.

The path to the shelter and further to the summit is excellently marked and orientation is no problem. From Capanna Alpina we followed path 11, just before the Gran Fanes pasture turned right onto path 17. There is also a concrete shortcut that exceeds the post on this forum. In both cases, the intermediate goal is the shelter and continuation to the final goal. The path is a military mule track, which especially in the summit section has seen better days. There are no special problems, just a bit more caution is welcome. In our case, the return was via the same variant, but you can make an endlessly long circular route from the first post velik nasmeh.

A few prices for hikers and our tourist gluttons ... parking fee at the arranged parking lot next to Capanna Alpina is 10 € for 24 hours. Next to it are clean toilets with running water, also equipped for the disabled. Coffee price is 2.8 €, price for 0.5 l of excellent draft Forst beer is 6 €.

Coordinates of the starting point (Capanna Alpina): 46°33'34.8"N 11°58'53.3"E
We overnight at the parking lot and set off very early.1
Our route is the path 11, already walked many times.2
Tourism money is invested also in trail maintenance, not only in municipal coffers.3
Peaks of various kinds glow in the first sunlight.4
In the valley however it is cold, especially due to numerous water streams.5
Important junction. This time we continue on the eleven, here also passes Alta Via 1.6
Alta Via 1 is so heavily visited that there simply aren't enough accommodations in the huts.7
This year at this time of year there is an incredible amount of flowers. This is how people marked the globeflowers along the path :)8
View back at the always interesting Piz dles Cunturines.9
This is already another story from path 17 … Cima Campestrin.10
VB = Valon Bianco, FR = Friedensweg.11
We walk on an excellent mule track. Without military paths the Dolomites would be much poorer.12
View back at the already visited Piz de Sant’Antone and Piza dales Nü.13
Below Cima Campestrin there are incredibly many boulders, some even overgrown with conifers.14
View back at the path through the wonderful landscape15
Monte Cavallo puts itself on display :)16
Beautiful mountain Piz Forcia Rossa. Last year we walked there on Friedensweg, or rather Via della Pace17
This time the meeting point is the well-visited shelter Bivacco della Pace18
The interior is tidy and clean. Up to 15 people can sleep there without problems19
The army built the path around 1915, reconstruction took place around 197420
View back to Monte Castello with the bivouac and Piz Forcia Rossa in the background21
This is the view ahead to our goal, Monte Cavallo22
The military path to it has seen better days, but with a little caution it is passable without problems23
At the summit ...24
In memory of the deceased mountaineer who passed away mid-winter25
Monte Cavallo is a great vantage point. View towards the numerous peaks of Pize Fanes26
View of the nearby peak Monte Casale, which is also within our reach27
After a short break we descend the same way to the path junction28
Here a few years ago we puffed up from the valley over endless scree :)29
Over the rickety bridge we continue towards Monte Casale30
At the summit, which is also an excellent vantage point31
View back at the just-visited Monte Cavallo32
This peak also offers extensive views. View of Torre Fanis…33
Also a view of all three Tofane. We learned more about the path's condition the next day34
Return along the same route…35
Bivacco della Pace, squeezed under a huge cliff36
We walk in the opposite direction, only the weather is more favorable to us :)37
At this time of year we have never seen so many flowers as this year. Beautiful :)38
Snapshot along the trail …39
L'Gran Pian valley40
Very special, speckled horses :)41
There is also an incredible amount of water. In many places it flows right over the grass42
End of the plain section and break into the valley43
For four years already he basks in the sun, we met him right at the start44
The path is arranged and excellently secured also for numerous tourists45
Such ones can be found too, and that in the worst heat46
We are already in the concluding part …47
The parking lot is completely full. Last look in our direction, this time at Piza dl Lech48
All together it came to 22 km and 1400 elevation gain49
