RODA DE VAEL - ROTWAND 2806m

Last weekend we visited the Rosengarten mountain group in the Dolomites. With the cable car (one-way ticket 8.5€) we went from Pera di Fassa to the Ciampiede
hut on the same plateau. Along path 545 we continued to Roda de Vael hut (1.5h). From the hut we headed to Vajolonpass saddle along path 541 and later 551 (1.15h). At the saddle we geared up for the ferrata and reached the summit via it in 35min. The ferrata is not demanding and well protected. Over the summit we descended to the gully where the descent ferrata is, but we crossed the gully and climbed the steep wall (well protected) under Torre Finestra tower. The path descends to a fork where due to threat from the sky we sadly had to decide not to continue right on Masare ferrata. We continued immediately left into the couloir via ladder and cables to the end or start of Masare ferrata. We overnighted at Roda de Vael hut (40€ half-board with sleeping discount), where the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated so much on Sunday and Monday that instead of planned Santner ferrata and on Catinaccio d'Antermoia on Sunday we only did path (549) to Rosengarten hut and after a two-hour forced drying stop in the hut we continued along path (550) over Tschagerjoch saddle to Vajolet hut where we slept and dried. For the mentioned path in heavy rain we took 3h. On Monday we descended by road to Gardeccia hut from where a taxi van runs every half hour (one-way 6€, return 10€) to the starting point in the valley.

On the last day of this year's holiday in the Dolomites. The original plan was a bit more ambitious, but this was probably the maximum the weather allowed that day.
Shame for the missed views... but even bigger shame would be a wasted holiday day velik nasmeh

For revisiting Rosengarten we took another day. First day was so nice that it would be a sin to go elsewhere (here). This time we chose prominent Roda di Vaèl as main goal, but went wide around it big grin.

Started near Passo Carezza pass. Parking is free and also start of path with first signs. It led us first past Rif. Paolina hut, then along long scenic 552 to Rif. Fronca hut. Right after signs for Santnerpass ferrata, up to the saddle. There surprised by brand new Rif. Passo Santner hut and past famous Vajolet towers down to Rif. Alberto and further to Rif. Vajolet and Rif. Preuss. Lots of huts, but in season impossible to book stay. Incredibly visited places, such crowds only in Sexten.

Returned via path 541 to Passo Zigolade saddle and good km after turned right to 551 towards Roda di Vaèl. Summit has easy ridge ferrata, so many hikers from this side. Opposite side different, where we continued the loop. Tricky notch Sforcela de le Rode prevents masses, short section needs more skill than whole ferrata on other side. Quickly over and then descent to Roda di Vaèl hut and down valley on 548. Closed loop too soon and another wonderful day in Rosengarten smile. More in photo story…

Start coordinates (Passo Carezza): 46.4046708N, 11.6135003E
We park near the Passo Carezza pass, where there are also the first direction signs.1
The Dolomites Latemar are the first to receive the morning sun. We two will still be in the shade for a long time.2
First we ascend to the Rif. Paolina hut, then a long traverse to the Rif. Fronza hut follows3
The traverse path marked 552 is extremely scenic. There are also many geological features here4
The Fronza hut is larger and has about 60 beds. It belongs to CAI, which means reasonable overnight prices5
Right behind the hut are signs for the Santnerpass ferrata, which is mostly B/C difficulty6
At the start there are some cables, then a long easy walking section to the actual ferrata start. Safety equipment not yet needed7
When the scree path ends, the real ferrata proper begins8
The rock is excellent, so often no protections. The S mark on rocks means Santnerpass ferrata9
Lots of completely free climbing up to easy grade II10
Enough markings, correct route never in doubt11
Technical aids available at all hard spots12
Same for exposed passages13
First of two harder sections. Gully exposed despite protections14
Intro is easy15
Gully crossing however difficult, requires proper experience16
Right after, the next harder section17
The vertical pitch is well protected, but due to the difficulty a queue forms immediately.18
We quickly pass by, followed by a few stronger pulls.19
We are already in the summit section of the via ferrata, right before Passo Santner saddle.20
The surprise is complete. A few years ago there was a shack-like shelter here, now this.21
Of course we go immediately to visit the new and modern hut, which despite its special shape completely blends with the environment.22
The hut is completely finished, its construction from nothing to the current state took only a good year.23
Photo of the shelter from 2019 at the same place where the new hut is now.24
Current appearance, everything is subordinated to high mountains. The hut stands at 2734 m altitude.25
After visiting the new acquisition, we descend into the Vajolet Towers valley, which is a paradise for climbers.26
The Rif. Alberto hut is also completely renovated. We have already slept here and it was a great experience :)27
Followed by descent to Rif. Vajolet and Rif. Breuss, where we were the previous day.28
Here they take great care of the tidiness of huts and paths. Workers are just repairing the path, which in my opinion doesn't lack much.29
Same story as yesterday. Crowds of people everywhere, and it's not even a weekend.30
We skip the hut visit and head straight ahead.31
We will continue along the upper path. The previous day we came along the lower road.32
We will follow 541 to Passo Zigolade, which has an addition *only for experienced*.33
The path slowly winds uphill, the view back is divine :)34
We are going in that direction.35
From here on, crossing a deep ditch will come, which we already know from before.36
This is how it goes :)37
Continuing on path 541 is problem-free from here on.38
On the other side of the Passo Zigolade pass.39
We have to go through there :)40
The wall is even more impressive up close than from afar.41
Hiker counter with warning not to photograph it. They probably steal them.42
A little further is the branch for the via ferrata to Roda di Vaèl. We also head there.43
First one needs to climb to the saddle.44
Numerous steps assist with this.45
We head to this prominent summit. The via ferrata follows the ridge.46
To the base of the mountain there is still some easy path.47
Here comfortable walking ends. Many are gearing up, so we hurry.48
Section of the ascent on the via ferrata.49
All in all, it's about A/B difficulty.50
At the top, Roda di Vaèl, 2806 m.51
The panorama is beautiful :)52
We came from somewhere there …53
But we go here. Surprisingly no one from this direction.54
Soon we recall this crossing that we once already traversed.55
The difficulty is far greater than any detail of the previous via ferrata, hence fewer visitors from this side.56
Notch. Only the ascent follows.57
Cables are tensioned, wall is vertical.58
Difficulties are within C, but the passage is short and well protected.59
We are already almost over the break.60
Luckily we don't have to climb up there to the cross :)61
The path goes lower and soon brings us to the junction for the Roda di Vaèl hut.62
We have to go down there, as we're running out of time for the Masarè via ferrata.63
But the descent also has a surprise :)64
The downward passage is hidden in a narrow gap between the rocks.65
It's so narrow that we can hardly squeeze through with our backpacks.66
There are still some fixed cables further on, then the descent eases.67
Rif. Roda di Vaèl hut, owned by CAI.68
We stop briefly, then continue along 548.69
Next to the CAI hut is the smaller Baita Pederiva, which is privately owned.70
A little more and the rock will overgrow it :)71
An alkaten pipe for water supply runs through the entire valley. Practical, but ugly to look at.72
We haven't been here before. The path is easy-going with excellent footing.73
Still inhabited mountain pasture right next to the path.74
From here we walk on a gravel road.75
At this junction we close the loop. Only a short stretch to the start remains.76
The end of another wonderful visit to Rosengarten.77
GPS track of the route. It added up to 21 km and 2100 m of ascent.78
