Starting point in Verdi-La Ila, so home or rather apartment. Bike in one garage, car in the other, me in jacket and on foot from home zavijanje z očmi

Woke up to Funtanacia, from there to summit trudged along velik nasmeh

Beautiful path under magical peaks went smoothly under my feet, though never quite caught the stride. Weather perfect for outing, night rain chased away stuffiness and heat, morning quite fresh. From forest into lovely valley, along it to first junction, later down chose other path, continued to second junction and from there to top. Short secured section just before, managed easily, then smoothly the bit more to big cross atop spacious summit. Four of us "lounging" up top, unbelievable end of July such gorgeous day cool

Some peaks first glance, some second, rest more or less ID'd with map. Snack went down well of course, rest and views too, bit of snapping pics no miss, during that quite a few gathered on top, time to descend mežikanje

Some crush on secured part, also help lady who with bit my assist "doors to summit opened" velik nasmeh

, then first junction, second junction, beautiful ledge under Para da Giai, larch grove and already at hut Ütia de Gherdenacia. There packed as on sign expected, still found seat quenched thirst, no hunger to sate. Continued other path to Funtanacia marvelled at crowds pushing mid hot day eek

. Well used to it Italian mtns, sometimes 2pm descent demanding peak hour below meet guy panting barely drags up in heat... At spring by path bit more rest, soon fine trip done. Beautiful mtn and paths to it, start early plenty solitude peace nasmeh

We first visited Sassongher a few years ago when exploring Puez Odle Dolomites ( Click ). Then we approached it from Passo Gardena pass, this time from La Villa village on the opposite side. From our accommodation to the village is just a good kilometer or two, so we set off on the tour right from our doorstep nasmeh

We first spotted the markings for our route near the only roundabout in La Villa. There we chose path 10 towards Corvara and branched right onto path 7 at Funtanacia hamlet. The initial steepness soon flattened and the well-trodden trail brought us to the high alpine basin Val de Juel. Surrounded by mighty giants and endless blue sky we continued with pleasure towards the saddle Forcella dl Sassongher. There we met hikers for the first time that day and all without exception came from Colfosco. The summit wasn't far anymore and there we took time for a snack with beautiful views and even better weather nasmeh

Descent to the saddle was the same way, for continuation we chose no. 5 towards Rif. Gardenacia hut. This path is really worth walking. It runs right under mighty walls high above Val de Juel and is very scenic. Our morning ascent was as if on the palm of our hand deep below us. At the edge of the wall the path changes terrain and soon after joining no. 11 reaches the hut. It's open until October, the visit this time was international. There were even some Americans, recognizable immediately by their characteristic throaty pronunciation. We were served quickly, prices on level of our huts, but menus far surpass them.

Descent to La Villa was quick. We still followed the excellently maintained 5 all the way to the village center and after obligatory coffee at favorite spot happily headed home velik nasmeh

For some time we walk along a scenic path, then we head down into the valley towards La Villa

Soon we are at the junction of a thousand paths. We choose the one to Corvara

Written in Ladin, what could it be? The answer hides in the coat of arms :)

In hamlet Funtanacia the sign for Sassonger first appears. We turn right onto path 7

Mighty wall of Para da Giai peak glows in morning sun. From the other side much gentler and accessible

On excellently constructed path we ascend across steep step

Markings sufficient everywhere, direction unmistakable

We are right before the slope breaks into gentler terrain

We continue along the high alpine cirque Val de Juel

Above us, to the left and right, rises a dome of Dolomite towers

In the head of the valley, mighty walls that close off Val de Juel are already visible

Signposts appear. Here we go left in the direction of the saddle Forcella dl Sassonger

View back. We came along the bottom of the valley, we will return left under the walls

The sun blazes with full force, so we quickly change to summer clothes

In the via ferrata a little below the summit we meet the first hikers

A bit of easy ascent to the summit part follows …

And we are already on the spacious summit, surprisingly almost alone

Under the towers, path no. 5 is clearly visible, which we will soon return on

This is what this path looks like. It is very scenic, not too exposed and full of marmots :)

One of them stands in the middle of the path in front of us and curiously watches us

Some passages are very interesting. We descend right under the walls

On the edge of the ridge the path turns into a different world

The Gardenacia hut is not far now and soon we are there

I have time for one dance, nothing more. I still have to descend to the valley :)

The warm sun lures almost all visitors to the pleasant terrace

There are flowers on every table. On the sunny side bees visit them diligently

Even past the hut we still descend along the 5

Lower down we turn right towards La Ville

We descend quickly and soon we are in the village

GPS track of the hiked route. Our variant shows 19 km and 1500 m elevation gain

Very panoramic summit, even if with its 2665m not anything special for Dolomites velik nasmeh

Up from Colfosco, descent to La Ila.
Last part, from saddle to summit is secured climbing path, but at lower end of ZZ path (ferata A/B).
