Today with colleagues from Celovec to the High Tauern on two easy three-thousanders. These are Schareck-3122m and Baumbachspitze-3105m. They lie above the glacier, where there is a summer ski resort. Even today in the morning they were happily skiing - really there were more skiers than expected. With the Gletscher Express "Molitaler Gletscher" cable car we drive under the mountain - through tunnel to the intermediate station at height 2234m. Then also with gondola to height 2800. The landscape around us is something special. These mountains have completely different rocks than say our Julijci. Water is here in abundance. Already down at the station for the little train we spot two magnificent waterfalls. At height from 2400 meters to 2800m it is full of water intakes and ponds. Into these intakes water from glaciers flows and is then channeled to lower-lying power plants. They use them also for artificial snowmaking. Above the intermediate station of the gondola cableway there is a glacier, where the summer ski resort is. You can also drive with the cableway all the way to the upper station of the cableway, which is at height over 3000m. But these two mountains we can also visit by foot path - we need somehow four to five hours one way. We from the intermediate station of the cableway set off along the glacier on snow to both 3000-meter peaks. Snow here is over two meters. One has to go very early, because later it sinks too much. It wasn't frozen and we didn't need crampons. But it is quite a steep slope, which we overcame in an hour and a half. On top of both peaks there are logbooks and of course big crosses. The path to Baumbachspitze is even secured with thick rope. On top luxurious views await us. One can see far around. We also see Grossglockner. The rocks enchant us, as if some giant had forged them around. They are colored very differently. After enjoying on both peaks we more skied than walked back to the middle cable car station. Return ride to here costs 28 euros. Around there are more peaks over 3000m, which can be accessible, but only somehow a month. Now was exactly the right time for a visit. Very soon indeed in autumn snow falls and long winter starts. I'll come again to this area. Tonight for a sample just a couple of pics - the rest I'll upload tomorrow.

Sadly the road is closed to public transport, didn't see any cyclists either. On foot to the upper cable car station none either. From the gondola we saw hikers walking the path from the lower gondola, which is also the upper railway to the glacier. At the glacier many followed us. We were almost the first. Of course we checked the snow before and found crampons not needed. Three weeks ago my friends went up in full winter gear - helmet, crampons and ice axe.

With the underground lift Mölltaler Gletscher Express my friend and I drove to the starting point at lake Stubelesee at 2234 m. There we put on skis and climbed along the ski slope first to Duisburger hut, where a wonderful view opens to the surrounding peaks. After a short break we continued towards the summit of Baumbachspitze, which was increasingly in fog. When we arrived below the summit, due to numerous avalanches general helicopter actions started that lasted almost all day. Avalanche conditions were really not the best, as huge snow had fallen previous days. Due to the chaos on the ski slope rescuers started searching for possible buried, but fortunately there were none.

After reaching the summit the fog cleared, views were fantastic all around.
