Senetiero degli Uccelli

In the Karnic Alps wanderings about this path it writes: "Vallone degli Uccelli is (a gem) for the most dedicated and capable adventurers who are aware of the boldness of their decision. The account was made when the path was still closed.

This year they renovated the path and since I felt capable enough as an adventurer I stepped onto it. Of course I found the real start of the path when I returned to the valley, but I started where I did 7 years ago. This time there's a nice sign at the start. The continuation wasn't particularly difficult; mostly I could walk with poles, exposed spots are secured with steel cable, but the exposure is huge and you can quickly tumble into a 150 or 200 m abyss. When I reached the Bird Stream, literally right into the stream bed, the real joy/adventure began. If before it was just scary scrambling on steep slopes above the roaring stream, now it became chilling, no path at all, just occasional marks on boulders, some already upside down. Had to go left uphill, but there's pure debris all the way to the transverse path 501. The slope collapsed many years ago in the size of at least 3-4 Mangart avalanches and is still collapsing. Continuing on path 501 wasn't a stroll, the mule track was literally washed away in many places, passages secured with chains. Didn't go to Monte Brizzio, but down to the valley, where on path "Sentiero della Schiava", it's quite clogged on 501, since a big fire raged on the mountain years ago, now everything crumbling-sprinkling. Lower to the bivouac and find my entry from May 6, 2005, even lower little church and Way of the Cross to it, well another one awaited me as had to get to the car, good 20 min to it and found the path start on Via Deposito street. It was great, probably won't go again. But quite a few Slovenians on it this year, at least three I knownasmeh.

Well, this is not just an adventure but an adventure with a dash. eek mežikanje Report follows...

Igor, thanks for this description and pics, both came almost even more handy than CAI path description (descent). Especially the info that from the stream you have to go left and the last pic, with which I found the starting point on Google Maps Street View and of course then also on terrain first time.

Some warnings for those rare ones who would tackle it:

- on Rio degli Uccelli path since renovation obviously new landslides occurred. Very careful!

- as Igor already said, from the streambed onwards over the landslide to the left. That's where we cross the stream second time (CAI description) and see marking on the boulder. So left of the boulder up. From there to the gentle slope no markings, but direction if we know where is clear.

- on path 501 after junction with 521 and first chains up and path through forest (where you falsely think the worst is over) torn chain over very loose scree gully. I helped myself by clipping into the chain link on one side with full harness, stepped onto landslide, poked the chain on the other side with a stick (hand short by a couple cm), then clipped over and climbed out to the other side.

- the unfortunate fire scar under Monte Brizzio is really suitable only for those not afraid of precise steps on loose rocky over deep abyss and psychological pressure of the fact that one wrong step can send you into the depths. Alternative descent possible on 501a (branch 10-15 min before fire scar), don't know condition on that path, leads to main road Pontebba - Mokrine on which probably need to walk some time to Pontebba.

No need to emphasize, helmet is mandatory, self-belay kit very useful, especially there at torn chain. Lots of walking on abyss edge, scree, landslides...

But Igor, that last via crucis to the car really nothing compared to all the rest. mežikanje That ladder from pic 3 was probably bought at some Baumax. velik nasmeh

And the start of this via ferrata is above the climbing area Palestra di roccia Rio degli Uccelli??

Huh, didn't see any climbing area, at least not from the path. Start is on Igor's pic 13. Car I left on the road Via Deposito at (currently there) some firewood depot. No one complained. Follow the signs from that pic, get to forest and to end of via ferrata on path no orientation problems at least. Then they really start... mežikanje

Coordinates of start for Google Maps or Garmin: 46.510565, 13.317590. There somewhere where during Street View shooting a red car was parked at that some garage that's where I left mine now. Signs not yet because via ferrata not renovated at time of Street View shooting (2011)

Given that the gorge Vallone Degli Uccelli has its own thread, briefly here...

Condition is quite similar to Igor's description at the beginning of the thread, conditions can change with every stronger rain. In the gorge you walk on narrow path above steep slopes, protections and markings are currently good all the way to junction with Bird Stream. From there on problems may follow. More on link … Klik

jezikWell, I don't know how it is if you hit the jackpot, but there were five free days, five days of good weather, then this tour... more than a jackpot lumped togethervelik nasmeh

During the descent from Breznjak (Monte Brizzia), last time I was thinking about this path, but that I'd check it off so soon, no, not even in dreams, and yes… cold morning and since we decided to "squeeze" into one car, we warmed up quickly, at least us on the back "bench"mežikanje. We drive to Tablja (Pontebbo), park at the destination so there are no unnecessary steps on descent, and we really treated ourselves well. A little searching among the streetszmeden, then along Deposito street directly past the blue "tin house", where a hoarse puppy barks at us, then the whole day we spend alone, with our thoughts.
The path quickly shows its wild charms, its airiness, steep grasses, wild gullies and with a little gulp I expect what follows, but the passages are incredible, the transverse path all the way to the contact with the streambed, incredible despite steep terrain, narrow but secured, a bit unnerves you with extra leaves or a bottomless slide, but concentration doesn't slack, as the depths of Vogel attract nothing. The gaze on the path slips ahead, where the outline of a huge landslide already appears, but until you are there, you don't even suspect its extent. From the traverse we "flew" to the water and if the path were easier, I believe a summer crowd, as the streambed completely enchants you with pools, boulders and the ambience overall. To avoid falls, apparently one in the group really likes to unintentionally soak his feetvelik nasmeh, "mama A." found a really excellent crossing, rocks dry, held like "super glue", a bit higher we repeated the exercise and all crossed the streambed dry.
From here you can already see what follows, and since the predecessor's description said maybe better left (thanks "bagi"mežikanje) and since the right scree didn't appeal to me at all, I stuck to that "maybe" without hesitation and yes, I recommend the left gully, which really looks ugly but you almost stroll across it compared to the right scree, then you run into the marking and cairn. The price of the left is that you exit muddy, but that's nothing compared to the rest of the team who really slogged through the scree, so they turned back and came via left to the top. But when I exited the debris, the throat screamed out loudvelik nasmeh, it didn't quite know that it wasn't the end yetzadrega, the rest experienced incredible sensations upon looking at the surroundings, I had the feeling as if I were on Mars. Towers above the slide, scattered boulders and you feel that everything under and above you is still alive. We had the opportunity to see a smaller landslide, which is probably routine here. A deserved snack followed and soon we all gathered and shared impressions.
Continued in zigzags, a bit along markings, a bit our own way, then the path led us to a junction (right Mokrine) and newly fallen snow awaited us, but it went without problems, great help of course the new renovated cables, as without them, I don't know how. From great enthusiasm because we had completed the path, we almost missed the turnoff to the first summit, unmarked but well visible and followable Bruka (Monte Bruca, supposedly has three peaks, though when searching my memory, only this one looked reachablezavijanje z očmi). Another deserved one, of course, snack and viewing around, yes the weather served us well. But time was ticking, the day is still quite short and since my roommate and I had both already been to Breznjak (Monte Brizzia) we headed down path 501 to the valley, the guys made a detour, we were at least half an hour ahead with one peakvelik nasmeh. Descent to Tablje without incident and even though it wasn't long ago that I walked here, the path doesn't disappoint.

Hmm, what to say when so much has already been written… I'm enchanted by the path, steep narrow traverses allow no mistakes and with that awareness the path is strenuous and demanding, meanwhile the views of bold gullies, precipices, wild world and solitude give that extra something. Our "flock" deserves praise, as the Idrija team with just one Styrian is really successful, hehehe and our energy on such paths is really great and simultaneously acts as silent encouragement when the head wants to play tricksnasmeh and gulp becomes lumpvelik nasmehjezik

I would also like to praise the CAI Pontebba team that maintains this path (and of course the other paths) which we can walk and experience, as otherwise they would probably remain hidden and difficult to reach, or even unreachable... all praise for persistent work!!!nasmeh
