South Tyrol, eastern part: Rote Wand (Rotwand), 2818 m

Our starting point for the ascent to the 2818 m high "Red Wall" was the Staller Sattel pass, 2050 m (the border between Austria and Italy runs over it). The path is very well marked (no. 7), the terrain extremely watery. Along the path and on nearby slopes there are still quite a few "winter remnants". The summit itself, in contrast to the plateaus which the approach follows, is quite crumbly, steep in the last part. Nice and technically undemanding tour.

A very early spring is occurring these days on this exceptionally scenic mountain, although winter gear is not needed. Nearby we did another very pink tour and surely we haven't said the last words yet.

My starting point for the trip was at Lake Lago di Anterselva-Antholzer See; there are plenty of free parking spaces. To the lower pasture Steinzgeralm, where there is also a restaurant, I warmed up nicely. A bit further, I greeted the first cows on the pasture and soon was already enjoying the view at the upper pasture, which is dug into the ground so that avalanches don't destroy it in winter. Then a long traverse to the right high under the ridge or summit awaited me, where I had to cross a series of streams and brooklets; luckily, I didn't have to cross the most raging and deepest ones. The summit is very panoramic; both lakes are as if on the palm of the hand, as are the most famous peaks in the Dolomites. I also had the company of two girls up there, although we sat quite apart under the summit. Descent on the same path, past the same cows, which like on the ascent also on the descent didn't pay much attention to me. Past the lower pasture, I quickened my pace, as I expected lunch elsewhere; at the lake, due to the considerable crowd, I didn't linger long either. Very nice peak and path to it, panoramic, worth repeating once more, then on touring skis smile
