From Naborje in the Kanaltal I go along the road marked 503 (the path is not drawn on the Tabacco map) above the Vallone di Malborghetto canyon towards Rif. Forestalle di Ciurciule. Almost at the end of the path, a road collapse surprises me; the passage is not possible, the plan fails, so I turn back. I go back about an hour, then I turn onto another road (probably an old military path) upwards towards Stabet. There is about 25-30 cm of snow, time is slowly running out, so at 14:00, 100 vertical meters below the summit, I turn back. For some time I descend along the road, then at a bend at 1340 m I turn onto a marked path that runs along some overgrown blunt ridge, and I follow the tracks of two predecessors into the valley. With this path, which is also not marked on the map, I considerably shorten the time for the descent to the valley. Most of the day there was pleasant sun, and the snow did not hinder the walking too much.

Hello, a couple of years ago they repaired this (long) road and then some severe storm destroyed it here and there again; that's why the start of path 503 now goes from Ciurciule (near the state forestry hut - Rif. Ciurciule) and then leads through a narrow valley in 1 hour to the saddle Sella della Caldiera on the Austrian border. One part of the road is under Poludnig; I walked it 3 years ago, and then I informed the responsible CAI section to mark it again and fix it a bit. The former state forester told me this year that they missed the marking in one part because they marked it straight up the stream to a dead end (I informed them again (CAI from Udine) that they should fix it as soon as possible); the right path goes a couple of minutes along the forest road across the stream and then turns left up into the forest, then you come out of the forest onto a meadow and after that a bit further up to its end, the trail now turns right back into the forest and continues diagonally to the saddle; the marking in picture 7 is from the state forestry service (they use white-red-white or white-black-white) and usually marks one parcel, we like CAI use red-white-red with a number in the middle (nice opportunity for this info for all other hikers because they read us, at least I know you know the difference in markings with us in Italy well); you're right, all these roads in these areas along the valleys were made by soldiers back then.

Thanks Alessio, it's clear you know all the paths in your area excellently, but these storms really wreak havoc on roads and paths. I think it's worst in the valley above Ukve and Naborje, also in Zajzera I saw huge gravel deposits in all gullies, also hit is Dunja valley (Val Dogna); as you said, the iron bridge was washed away, so passage for the path to Strma peč (Monte Cimone) is impossible, also brought lots of scree in other gullies. When I was last at Rudni vrh (Sella di Somdogna) I saw that path 649 to Rifugio Bernardinis is still closed, as well as the path over Piparji; apparently snow avalanches took the whole slope with trees. I hope you'll get enough helpers so the paths get fixed and that we can also fix those cross-border paths we agreed on at the meeting between CAI FVG and PZS. Lp

Today on a nice sunny day I head again towards Stabet. This time the start is from Ukve. At the chapel, where several roads cross, I turn left and after about 500 m I park. I go on the road closed to public traffic towards Planina Priu; in summer there's farm tourism open there, today I also meet a lady who speaks nice Slovenian there. The view from the pasture is unique from Mangart to Montaž. After a short chat I continue on the marked trail to Planina Mezesnik (could also be Macesnik), views even better; the marked path from Ukve also leads here. On the road going west I continue towards Stabet, at some point I turn right onto a forest logging trail which soon ends, I go straight up the hill, there is no path on it and soon I'm at the highest point which is in the middle of the forest. The summit is marked by some kind of "border stone". From the summit I descend towards NW, lower I reach a wooded ridge along which I go for some time towards north, then I descend even more to the right on some unmarked path into Ravna valley (Val Rauna), where below I catch the marked path 504 and soon I'm back at the car. Due to somewhat complicated orientation I recommend only the visit to the upper Planina Mezesnik and return to the start. Snow on the top was about 30-40 cm.

Hello, it looks like in 2010 there will be a plan to repair the path under Piper and part of 649, the responsible P.D. FVG discussed this somewhat at the last meeting in October because we had members of the FVG path commission among us, I hope it succeeds, at least I'll tell when I know more precisely; yes, in Val Dogna valley after the September storms paths 651-652 and the first part of 640 are now closed (no little bridge over the stream anymore); hope for helpers will be harder than usual.
