Vrh Dunje and Lipnik

Dunja Peak and Lipnik are beautiful viewpoints above Dunja valley (Val Dogna). We climbed to them on 31.10. We started at the beginning of the mentioned valley, followed path no. 602, which first resembles a paved pilgrimage path, later hides in a nice forest, past isolated farms, in the upper part among bushes and towards the end on very steep grasses, where we literally chewed our knees. At the top though... a day for gods, as Andrej said. The views magnificent, the backdrop of mountains with Montaža created its own unique scene... in short... nice. The path ascends very quickly and steeply, so we quite quickly overcame those 1500 elevation meters to the top. Couldn't resist the sun, so martinčkanje followed. Since after that neighboring Lipnik was waiting for us, we didn't enjoy it for too long. We descended to the saddle, then bit into steep grasses again and after less than an hour's walking stood by the cross on top of Lipnik. Path no. 601 was waiting, which brought us to the valley. Luckily we left one car in the valley before the tour, at the start of path 601, so we were spared walking the 7 km long asphalt road to the starting point. Nice circular tour, but dangerous when wet due to possibility of slip on steep grassy slopes

Already when we first climbed to Lipnik about four years ago from the place Chiout in the Dunja valley, we knew we would return to these areas. Because it's simply too beautiful. And on Saturday we went again… and daughter with us. Because for these views it's really a shame not to share them with someone else too.

This time we started higher, at the Poccet pasture (to which a steep and narrow road leads from the place Pietratagliata), so for a short day, such as the days are now, there remained not too much and not too little but just right walking, that we calmly circled over both peaks, took a rest on both, admired the views and imprinted them into memory… until next time… nasmeh.

Lipnik and Vrh Dunje...
Turbo has written it all. Let me just add that the path from the Poccet pasture to Lipnik is not difficult and not long either. Further towards Vrh Dunje though, the most annoying descent is on steep grasses. The little path also goes across, is a bit longer, more pleasant and we returned via it. Wonderful wandering..velik nasmehvelik nasmeh

A few more pics from the same trip. This ramble will probably still be relevant this year, because no major snowfalls are forecast yet. To the starting point just below Poccet pasture leads a nice, somewhat narrower asphalted road.

Coordinates of starting point (Google Maps_Android) for Malga Poccet - 46°29'14.1"N / 13°19'20.8"E

Morning in Karniji. We left the car a little below planina Poccet.1
A bit higher there is a path branching off to the right at the interesting water fountain.2
The first morning rays caress the surroundings, while we are still in deep shadow.3
Cute trail marker.4
Well, we too have slowly reached the well-deserved sun.5
The morning (and evening) landscape is most beautiful when illuminated by the sun.6
A little further and we will reach the saddle where you first see the Montaže group.7
We go up there8
Lipnik, as known locally.9
The highest on the horizon is Montaž.10
Sunlit slopes towards Vrh nad Dunjo.11
The path is an ancient mule track, mostly in good condition, just overgrown with grass here and there.12
After a long time, another joint one :)13
View back to the path traversed from Lipnik14
Vrh nad Dunjo looks close, but we still needed a good hour to reach it15
View over Kanalska dolina16
Descent along the overgrown mulatjera to the path junction towards Vrh nad Dunjo17
The slopes here are quite substantial and extra caution is advisable18
Along the path19
Vrh nad Dunjo has a more modest marker but is an excellent viewpoint20
On the panorama the atypical shape of Montaža dominates throughout21
Lipnik from Vrh nad Dunjo22
Return from Vrh nad Dunjo is in the opposite direction. A loop trail is not feasible here23
On the way back the views of the surroundings are even nicer24
Steep grass slopes but the path is clearly visible and well-trodden25
We return a little below the ridge. The path has several intersections at the end; always stick to the left path.26
You also have to go through the tunnel.27
Mule track again. Unfortunately they were built for completely different purposes, but without them there would be far fewer hiking trails.28
We almost *spiked the klpbaso*.29
Such gigantic anthills are also along the path.30
Another alpine pasture.31
Here the larches surprisingly haven't shed all their decoration yet.32
Planina Poccet. On the fence is an invitation for a chestnut picnic on November 4th.33
View of our peaks. Left is Lipnik, right is Vrh nad Dunjo.34

Ah Dunja, "my" Dunjanasmeh...lonely, steep, isolated and full of cekov, hehhe and just that rawness, unfrequentedness gives it that something that makes me return and return...
I leave the car before the start of the 18 km road (go sometime by bike, I recommend, looong, looong, but nicemežikanje) and set off on path 602, first along a steep road, which soon turns into the forest and then past a couple of houses that are still inhabited, as a friendly grandpa surprises me from the windownasmeh; then Dunja starts to show its true face. The path goes most of the time along the very edge of the forest, where the loud road reminds you that civilization is close, but you still feel alone and small.
The path to saddle Mincigos, where path 602a joins, is trodden, well-marked, otherwise steep, but "troubles" arise when you exit the forest onto the meadow at the fallen tree. Here the marks completely disappearzmeden. I cross the meadow by myself, but too far to the right, then I look ahead, look down—it was blowing hard behind my reareek, hehe, I turn back and try straight ahead; it seemed like some passage?!!, meanwhile thinking, just so I don't have to go down here, just so the weather holds (afternoon storms forecast?!!) and lo and behold, I spot a red dot, yuhu, but the troubles aren't over yet, as the maneuver to the top repeats a couple more times. There are no marks at all, or they are very poorly visible, and so before the summit section it "pulls" me to the left, into cut scrub; of course I tell myself, super, that's a sign that I'm on the right track, hehehe and suddenly a path joins from the right?!! and I see that I have bypassed the desired summitzavijanje z očmi, ehhehhe. Of course, I reverse and I'm already standing on the summit of Dunjanasmeh, yippee. I take a quick look at the path ahead, but since the clouds also had the main say that day, I don't linger long: a slight descent, then a real enjoyable traverse all the way to the summit of Lipnik along a well-preserved mule track, which slightly fades under the summit, but there are no problems.
Here, due to the weather, I decide not to descend the same way (the plan was descent via 602a) and the most optimal route is—to me otherwise arduous—the road, path no. 601. On the way, I peek at the Bieliga pasture just as the first thunder rumbles, and my decision quickly proves more than correct. A short snack at the weekend huts, which have a truly dreamy location, then to Chiout, where I managed (hmm, I got a bit thoughtfuleekzmeden) to "charm" only the 7th vehicle, just as it started to rain, heehehe. Obviously, I need to work more on those techniquesvelik nasmeh than on the execution of the tour itself, hehheheejezik
The tour is extremely varied; you have to use your nose a bit, especially in the upper part: steep, solitary and also long, but it fills you up for quite some time and offers just that which draws you back.

Alessio, action!!!!!!

Alessio action??? How cheeky, not to say insolent, to call Alessio and trail markers in general to action.
Marking is not just painting marks; it's also repairing paths after heavy rains, avalanches and rockfalls in walls, and that's not work on the Ljubljana Moor, Prekmurje plain or perhaps Vipava Valley. That's hours and hours of work—voluntary of course, dangerous... I know Alessio personally well; in the western Julian Alps I met him most often laden with pickaxe, shovel, chainsaw, i.e., in action. I wouldn't even comment if by chance some ten years ago I hadn't helped mark and clean exactly that path you mention; as proof, there are also a couple of Knafelc marks in between—I doubt you noticed themvelik nasmeh.
Really, it's easiest to criticize someone, do nothing even for yourself, let alone for others. Just tell me, how many cairns did you build along the path where you didn't notice the marks—for yourself, for the return or for future hikers who might have even bigger orientation problems than us? For such marking there's no need to carry paint or brush; material usually gets delivered to the place where it's needed. I don't know what else people want, to have a red and white line painted from the parking lot to the goal—God forbid interruptedjezen. Nowadays so much literature is available, and on the internet, good maps (Tabacco for western Julians) where you have everything; just take a little time to read, study—in short, prepare for the tour in the true sense of the word. But there is another solution—a mountain guide for leading in high mountains in all conditions and for alpinistic climbs an alpine guide. We have several of the latter highly valued in the world, but that's another story. Hats off to Alessio and friends; I think such a team as Alessio's really shouldn't be sending appeals for action—rather lay a stone on stone yourself. Greater joy gives me a small stone cairn by the path than meeting a headless hiker who complains that the path on which he is just returning from the summit—the same one—is poorly marked. Nice mountain greeting and safe travels, Sly.

accidentally reading this thread here, thought it would be under "Julian Alps", SLY hi how are you? we prepared wood at bivouac Mrzle Vode; don't worry so much because just like with us in Italy it's the same tune,("tutto è dovuto/ everything is due" - if I translated right)who "warns" usually does nothing/helps nothing in it (I always thank for info but then when I ask for help .... no more answer or availability) , slowly we will stop this voluntary work and paths will start to "age" with us and disappear so that then selection will do its thing, so it will be even easier to criticize us but into the void ; actually paths 602 and 601 are maintained by some members CAI Pontebba/Tablja all over 60!

Alessio hello, thanks for the info on wood stock at my favorite bivouac, anyway plan to visit it soon and replenish the stock, as saw and axe are in usual place, right? Last time we met in Dunja at Zacchi chapel when you went on hike, I came from Clapadorie where I marked the entrance to Vio Dognonasmeh.I'm less often at the most beautiful end, a bit because of health, a bit because of age, still like to roll a stone off the path or throw a branch away, take something "forgotten" from bivouacs and make some cairn... More we'll say over coffee in pastry shop by Monturanasmeh Nice greeting to your whole team, don't forget to greet Mr. Huberte and Adrian, and happy trails.

In the last five minutes of driving I decided to go to Lipnik and Dunje Peak instead of further to the Carnic Alps. By car you reach Malga Poccet pasture, judging by sight all trees from windthrow are already cleared. To Lipnik summit I used ice axe for a couple of short snow patches, south side is dry. From Lipnik summit I continued along ridge to next summit then descended a bit to lower path where it goes to Dunje Peak. Also here on north side I used ice axe. On the way back I met two more, snow softened, footprints made. After longer rest I descended marked path to one more summit and back hiking trail, road to pasture. Nice spots, like some paradise above Tablja, Dunjo....recommend in autumn.
