Hello,
On hribi.net under the category List of mountains/Portugal there is a description of a picturesque trail to the highest peak of Madeira island, namely Pico Ruivo (1862m). Starting point Pico do Arieiro.
End of September 2016 I hiked it, and I definitely recommend it if your path takes you to those parts. It is true that fog is often present, so you need some luck with the weather. In our case it was quite clear on the way to the summit, then the summit got covered. From the starting point to the summit it takes about 2-3 hours. Back the same way.
