Trekking in Iceland

In four days from picturesque Landmannalaugar to the green valley of Thorsmork along one of the most special trails on our planet – Laugavegur

Landmannalaugar is also the start or end of one of the most beautiful hiking trails on our planet – Laugavegur – the hot springs trail. Through fields of black lava and past hot solfataras we climb under the foot of the most picturesque mountain in Iceland – Brennisteinsalda. Views of the color palette of mountains get better with every elevation meter. We do most of the ascent in the first hour and a half, then we reach a more plateau-like world. On the way to the highest point of the trail we can admire numerous hot spring areas, mighty glaciers in the background, cotton grass fields... If we detour off the trail, we can reach the most interesting hot spring field and the loudest geyser along the trail, Storihver. Before descending to the hut we walk on the most beautiful obsidian in Iceland in the Hrafntinnusker area. If the weather is nice, the walk to the ice caves Ishellir will be rewarded with beautiful views, where contrasts between ice and fire are among the most pronounced in Iceland. In the background reigns the volcano Hekla, before it an exceptional hot spring field. Here usually ends the first day.
On the second day the mighty glacier Myrdalsjokull comes into view. Most of the trail winds through colorful rhyolites. In the background we already notice the black lava world and white glaciers. Before arriving at the next hut by Lake Alftavatn, an icy cold experience awaits us, crossing a glacial river. In the afternoon we can head to some nearby hill, throw cards, read a passage from a book, play a game of chess…
The third day the trail leads from Lake Alftavatn towards Hvangill valley. Two glacial river crossings await. We walk on black lava, as if in a desert. Those who have a bit of sense for orientation detour slightly off the trail and get very close to the Entujokull glacier, where you can observe global climate changes literally live. From the hut it's worth walking to the picturesque and 200 meters deep canyon. On the last day the traveler first faces some interesting gorges, also views of glaciers open up. The landscape becomes greener, before reaching the goal in Thorsmork valley the hiker awaits another icy cold experience, crossing the Tronga river. Thorsmork is a forest and flower-covered glacial valley. It's worth staying there at least one more day, climb nearby peaks and absorb the beauty of glaciers, snow-covered mountains and observe unusual lava formations.
In the last two years we climbed to the lava that erupted in 2010 three times. This year we observed still live lava less than half a meter under the surface. Exceptional experience. We are also the only Slovenian travel agency that leads you to the new lava. In 2012 we prepared two trips to Iceland. Check our programs at www.ekopotovanja.com

Yes, Iceland is really something special! My wife and I visited it last in distant 1996. But since we like to plan routes ourselves, such group trekking tours aren't the best for us... there everything is done on "command". This tour we hiked in almost complete solitude and beauty of color playfulness, as seen from your pics.
But it is necessary to know that the best time for visiting Iceland is the 7th and first half of the 8th month. And also that in August on average one sunny day in Reykjavik.
It is beautiful!

Hi Kozorog,
I agree, traveling alone, in a couple or in a group has pros and cons. If we go alone with the regular bus, the bus takes us with some intermediate stops to Landmannalaugar. But we can stop and absorb the landscape where it's most beautiful and where we want. I have hiked this path as a guide already six times, in both directions, once even to Skogar, today on the "old path" from Thorsmork to Skogar there's lava, which gives the journey special charm. The icing on the cake of the journey are curiosities along the path that most pass by unaware they exist. At the big hot spring and ice caves we haven't met a living soul yet. This year 30 cm under the surface we admired living red lava. With groups we were in Iceland already in June and also late in August. In June there's more snow, at the end of August wonderful autumn colors appear. At the end of July we experienced Indian summer, on the pass it was snowing. For a true mountaineer the experience counts, which I wouldn't limit to 5 weeks. Iceland is not for people who would statistically worry about the weather. The data that on average in August in Reykjavik there is only one sunny day is in my opinion twisted. From my 15 trips to Iceland I can't confirm that.

With Damixy two years ago I "trekked" the tour in Iceland and it was unforgettable. Great tour, great landscape, also with group we got on excellently, about guide who knows the land in detail no words wasted nasmeh. Although I'm not fan of group travels myself, it was super then and this year in Greenland too. We were like extended family, shared all chores even household mežikanje, experienced all landscape beauty in good weather and also when "it was pouring on us". Recommend, north of our planet is really great.

Last week I was also in Iceland. Among other things, also on the Laugavegur trekking: https://bojanambrozic.com/2019/09/20/islandija/
