3-4-day tour in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps

Somewhere around mid-May or for the first of May I'm planning an extended weekend in the mountains. Start on Friday evening or Thursday afternoon at Velika Planina. Given that there are plenty of nice and fairly accessible peaks in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, I'd do this semi-winter tour there. Mountaineering gear I have is really good boots, 12-tooth crampons and helmet. I don't know if it'll suffice for those winter conditions which will probably still be there then, so I'm thinking whether to buy a hiking ice axe just in case, because you never know when you slip. Fitness isn't an issue; I'm a hardened runner. This year only Grintavec and Stol and some mid-mountains without special issues and muscle soreness the next day. Mountaineering knowledge is the other issue since in winter except this year I haven't really gone much in mountains so I'd avoid any alpinism. Recently two mountaineers hinted at a rough route - start could be at Velika Planina then over Konj and other mountains to hut at Korošica and back towards Kamniško sedlo then Brana, Turska gora, Skuta I think (these peaks are questionable at least for Skuta and Brana which I've been to; I know it's pretty hard to get up in these conditions because Brana even in summer isn't an easy tour). Last day sleeping at Kokrško sedlo or just descend to valley. How about hut openings in May? Only winter rooms or does something open in May? Have you done a similar tour or could you advise which paths to take and what gear to get.

One small remark: 12-point crampons, ice axe maybe for every case? Because you never know when you slip - how are you gonna stop if you never have before? Mid-May still lots of snow, on your route some problematic slopes and gullies that stay snowy til summer. If Brana seems not easy even in summer to you... come on, think a bit more.

12-point crampons and ice axe, MANDATORY, not maybe. Plan your tour where you're going beforehand, also check hut openings online or call the club managing it. Good luck.

Hm. That's a great suggestion for summer when it's dry, now it's quite demanding. Plus the route you mentioned is summer one, in snow mostly other approach directions. In these mountains mid-May still huge snow. Bajte mostly closed (Kamn. saddle maybe not), gotta carry stove, food... Above all ice axe, mandatory. Nice if you know how to use it. I'd rather do single day tours in your place.

Advising so long term is ....hard! Conditions till then will change thoroughly... One thing wishes, one is to pull it off. That's not bad either. But maybe one or two ice axes besides crampons already necessary, esp on north slopes... Poles and crampons, shouldn't go together...?!! Wonder why no ice axes in your gear yet such/different..?? What conditions then...? and fix Kamnjiško to Kamniško cheers

David, from your writing I see it's not quite clear to you what's waiting up there! Given that, I rather recommend some Pohorje crossing or lower hills than Kamnik ones which are more dry. Don't overestimate yourself, 'cos slip can be just one for eternity. Kamniks even in summer quite tricky for us average folks. So in such conditions, so high not enough just fitness but package of fitness, knowledge, experience and gear. If missing any or not 100% think again. And this writing not smart-assing, just friendly advice

Very nice winter tour for very experienced mountaineers , for average folks hard to do , for inexperienced very dangerous...

How come no one mentioned sinking in? At least snowshoes needed if no skis. Agree with Pohorje crossing recommendation.

Thanks for advice, will consider. Yes wishes one thing reality another I really bit on neck overestimated situation. Gear I'll get experience unfortunately not. Mountains have two slopes south no doubt by then snow more or less gone but walked quite on north side. Ok then really better now some day tours, lower tours with ice axe then summer see how.

One more tiny advice: in winter don't go where you didn't in summer! This advice is very important!!! I remember this often when in snow higher up... I wish you best regards and many nice moments in the mountains.
