Across Pohorje with children

Hello!

I'm planning a 2- or 3-day hiking trip with children across Pohorje. To the starting point by train, across Pohorje, sleep 1x or 2x somewhere, down to Maribor, to the train and back home. Can you suggest a route, where to sleep and what interesting things to see along the way?

Thanks in advance!

Starting point by train will be difficult, but if you manage to get a ride from Dravograd to Kope, I suggest the tour: Kope-Ribniška koča-Lovrenška jezera-Rogla-Areh.

A few years ago I did a Pohorje tour every year. Train to Maribor, bus under the cable car and cable car to Pohorje. Since I always started the tour in the afternoon, I overnighted at Areh each time. Next day slowly to Ribniška koča, overnight there, next day to Grmovškov dom. If slower, overnight there; if early enough, continued to Slovenj Gradec, bus to Velenje, train to Celje and home. Such a tour is feasible only on weekdays, as there are no Velenje-Celje trains on Saturday and Sunday.

I don't know how old the kids are or how accustomed they are to walking, but anyway I recommend the 3-day tour more. Last year with my girlfriend (entirely on foot MB-SG), it was quite tough for 2 days. As for transport, we two arranged it on prevozi.org.

With PD Podpeč Preserje we walked a big part of the trail during the Statehood Day period. We went quite "zigzag", took three days. First section was very long, about 8 hours of walking, others shorter.
Towards Kremžarjev vrh there were already many blueberries, elsewhere not yet. We started at Belvi, where you can get by cablecar - it runs every hour, but we drove all the way to Osankarica, where we started walking. Report and pics I provided at: http://www.pd-podpec-preserje.net/utrinki-s-pohorja-25-do-27-6-2015/
We slept at Ribniška koča and Koča Planinec. Both times we were very very satisfied.

Hi, we'd like to go to Pohorje with a 4-year-old girl so 2x overnight. Does anyone have a suggestion for which huts and where so it's not too strenuous for the child? Thanks.

Yes, because we'll go by car to some starting point e.g. under Pohorje cable car or similar. Thanks in advance for some tips. Regards

Leave the car in Maribor and go by bus to Lovrenc na Pohorju. From there across Lovren Lakes to Rogla (overnight). Next day cross to Areh (overnight). Third day to the cable car and down to the valley (on foot or by cable car).
For a 4-year-old child it might already be too much!

@dj12: I would drive by car to Ribnica Hut and sleep there 1 or 2 nights. From there you have in one direction a nice scenic ridge path towards Kopa, in the other direction also a very nice path towards Lovren Lakes. Food at Ribnica Hut is excellent and sleeping is well taken care of.
B option is to base yourselves at Rogla and go on excursions from there.

Of course it all depends on how much your child likes walking.

I recommend the trail across Pohorje with children in the direction from Slovenj Gradec to Maribor, as we usually return to the valley in the evening, and from Maribor there are better connections to your home place than from Slovenj Gradec. It's true that if you're in excellent condition, you can do the tour in one day, but if you want to enjoy along the way, not just rush, take 3 days.

1st day (Friday)
This will be the most strenuous due to overcoming the greatest elevation differences. Bus ride to Slovenj Gradec, moderate ascent to Kremžarjev vrh, which steepens towards the top. From Kremžarjev vrh to Partizanka at Kopa follows the most strenuous part of the trail, as the path through the forest first steeply descends to the lowest point, then steeply ascends almost all the way to Kopa. Considering you'll have backpacks with quite a bit of luggage (at least a windbreaker, some clothes and water), you'll rest most often on this section. But you'll be rewarded in this area with a view of an endless sea of bushes of purple heather. From Kopa to the highest point of Pohorje - Črni vrh, you'll travel through an endless sea of blueberries and cranberries ripening just in summer time and soon after you'll find yourselves at Ribniška koča, where I recommend the first overnight.

2nd day (Saturday)
After a hearty breakfast, you'll continue on a less strenuous path to Rogla, Pesek and Klopni vrh. Along the way, you can see the beautiful Ribniško and Lovrenška lakes. At Klopni vrh I recommend the second overnight, as here you can truly rest at a quiet place. Pesek is too close to Rogla and people most often drive there by car to party in the evening hours, when tired hikers with children want rest.

3rd day (Sunday)
From Klopni vrh the path now leads to the Pohorje primeval forest and Šumik waterfall, from there without major ascents and descents to Areh and Ruška koča. From there to Mariborska koča, which is the last stop before Bellevue on Mariborsko Pohorje. If darkness and fatigue haven't overtaken you yet, from here follows the descent to Poštela and Spodnje Radvanje in Maribor. Otherwise, no one will blame you if you take the cable car down to the valley. If you were inventive, you did it yourself, or asked some acquaintance to park your car under the cable car, with which at the end of the path you can drive home, otherwise the bus will be fine too.

Finally, it's not superfluous to mention to arrange alpine cards before the trip, both for discounts on accommodations and for insurance in case of some unfortunate event. A Pohorje map won't be superfluous either, as a moment of inattention can quickly lead you far off the planned path.

Happy trails!

Don't forget the mandatory equipment (quality shoes, poles, water, hat, sunglasses, anorak...)5
The weather in the hills can change quickly, so take appropriate clothing and footwear!6
A wonderful view is one of the things that make it worth going into the hills...7

Congratulations on the description. I would add and recommend visiting Tiho jezero, Pohorski bataljon and Črno jezero on the 3rd day after Klopni vrh.

This is a very nice additional loop past Osankarica.

Hello!

With 10 and 11 year olds we want to hike across Pohorje.
We have plenty of time, we can wander for 4 or 5 days. I'm planning the direction Maribor - Slovenj Gradec. To Maribor by train, then up by cable car. In Slovenj Gradec I have relatives, so no need to worry about buses, because we can "extend" a bit there.
Please provide some suggestions for sleeping, because last time I crossed Pohorje I was exactly as old as my "girls" now. It was unforgettable....
Thanks and regards, Lenka
