I'm also thinking about buying this shoe (Millet Bouthan GTX). I've had it on my foot about three times and it seems more and more that it's the right one.

"Capin" report how it performs in the terrain.

Does anyone have experiences with Millet Alpinist GTX shoes?

@capin and šerpa: my current shoes are Millet Bouthan GTX. The shoe wears nicely, never blistered me and I'm very satisfied with that. In winter they don't make me cold, in summer they're not hot. But I expected much more durability. Bought them in August 2008 and already in poor condition. Leather cracks (though I sprayed them regularly, due to GTX membrane greases don't come into play), rubber protecting leather above sole is peeling (not big issue), sole is quite worn. I've been in mountains relatively a lot.

Very similar and highly praised shoe is Scarpin Ladakh. I think price is close. Garmont also has a similar model with grooves for semi-auto crampons, but thinner leather.

If buying again, probably get shoe with slots for auto crampons for winter and lighter for summer. For easier hikes where you don't walk more than 2 hours with crampons, they are fine.

I also tried the Garmont Idaho model but it has a wider last and my foot "floats" a bit in it. Given the company's reputation, I'm surprised that Millet shoes perform so poorly.

miham - as far as I can tell, leather needs to be treated with the appropriate creams so it doesn't lose its properties, the Goretex membrane itself is sewn into the shoe's interior, so as far as I know it doesn't need spraying.

On my current shoes, a combination of leather and textile with Goretex membrane, the instructions even specifically warn not to spray Goretex sprays on leather.

Maybe that's why your leather got damaged (because it dried out from not being treated).

The day after tomorrow I'm going to Iglu and I'll read the maintenance instructions. Really curious about it.

extremely important not to treat the protective rubber surrounding the shoe with impregnating creams, as it dissolves it! I use Granger's G WAX, Iglu 4.99 euros. I treat shoes as needed, once before winter and that's it... extremely satisfied, both with shoes and the wax.

Probably should treat them with this, as it says Gore recommends it, since it doesn't clog the Goretex membrane.

GRANGERS – G- Max Leather Conditioner
Cream for impregnating and maintaining all types of leather - suitable also for shoes with Gore-Tex® membrane, as it doesn't reduce breathability. Gore-Tex® recommendation. 100 ml.

šerpa, I was three days on Sviščakih with family, and normally on Snežnik. Shoes are really good, I also tried with crampons (though not necessary) and they work the same as with automatic crampons. Regarding maintenance, treat rubber with glycerin cream, leather with leather spray (old-timers still swear by pig fat). But that the sole wears out, as far as I know no shoe lasts forever. I have lighter trekking shoes for easier hikes. Heavier for winter, high mountains in summer. Regards.

Yeah, I seriously doubted that such a renowned brand like Millet makes such bad shoes as "miham" described.

Maybe he just got a "lemon" piece, you know like with cars, even among the best one that glitches. regards
