Ameglia - Tellaro Trail

The towns of Ameglia and Tellaro are located in the extreme southeast of Liguria, right at the border with Tuscany. Nearby or across the Gulf of Poets is the famous town of Portovenere (UNESCO), in the same gulf is the port of La Spezia, and nearby are also the famous Cinque Terre which unfortunately I didn't get to visit. Not because of the floods that ravaged there about a week earlier (all five villages except Vernazza, where it was worst, are accessible by train, the famous Sentiero Azzurro is interrupted only in one section which can also be bypassed by train) but because on the very last day when I planned to visit Sentiero Azzurro, it rained heavily again so all schools were closed, and the night before there was also a tragedy in Genoa where six people died.

Well, two days earlier when the weather was still nice I set off on the trail mentioned in the title. The trail is beautiful, not demanding fitness-wise or technically (fitness-wise maybe a bit more in the opposite direction but you can avoid it by taking the bus partway back - see link below) and above all short (1h one way). The trail is suitable for families, children, dogs,...

Both towns are very nice, although out of season they were a bit deserted but maybe that's even better. Link to trail description: http://www.apathtolunch.com/2011/06/brides-walk-ameglia-to-tellaro.html

From Ameglia we first climb in half an hour to the saddle between the two towns, i.e., to the village of Zanego. The ascent is gentle. After crossing the road we descend towards Tellaro. Right at the start of the descent we already spot the sea and the Gulf of Poets (named after Byron and Shelley who vacationed there - the latter was fatally shipwrecked on his vacation returning from Rome in a storm). This is followed by another half-hour descent to Tellaro. Back to Zanego, as said, the ascent is a bit steeper but still moderate.

Along the trail we see typical Mediterranean houses, Mediterranean architecture, cultivated terraced landscape, coastal cliffs and above all a nice view of the Gulf of Poets.

Besides the mentioned two towns and Portovenere there are also two nice small towns Lerici and San Terenzo, nearby as said also Cinque Terre, in the hinterland some nice towns (Sarzana, Castelnuovo, Ortonovo and the archaeological site of Luni). The coastal towns and neighboring hills are connected by a network of well-marked hiking trails (which is missing in our tourist areas) and this trip is far from the only one we can do there.
