Another one of those of mine, which by route doesn't belong to mountain biking, but elevation gain and km save it ...from Bc to Lepena for morning coffee, where sun rays already warm me, then continue along Trenta, which is always prettier, more autumn-colored...uhhh, now for real, ascent to Vršič, where I earned lunch with dessert and full throttle to Kranjska Gora and further to Trbiž, then again ascent over Predel to starting point. Nice tour, with quite some elevation difference and almost round 100 km

Not such a grandiose tour as rozka's above , nor is it mountain biking but a road classic, still I'll describe the trip to our highest road pass a bit. The wish was Bovec - Vršič, but due to heat it was only Trenta - Vršič. I've climbed it many times from Kranjska Gora, this year I chose the Primorska side and have to say, although the ascent is longer, you overcome a greater elevation difference, at least for me from this direction the ascent is nicer. Plus I felt there was less traffic than from Kr. Gora. I start at the Dom in Trenta and through serpentines, enjoying views of surrounding peaks, slowly climb to the top. In between I stop at the Šupca viewpoint, where there are remains of the former Austro-Hungarian freight cableway between Kr. Gora and Kal-Koritnica, and enjoy views from the panoramic platform there. Interesting, I've somehow always overlooked it until now. At the top it's hot, no wind and full of cars and of course sheep . After a longer stop and some martinčkanje, an enjoyable descent to the valley, of course with lots of caution, since traffic was quite heavy both ways (wonder what it was like towards Kranjska Gora ). In short, a nice classic tour that ended with a pleasant and refreshing (brr) cooldown in the Soča just before Trenta.

Variant of the described route for true masochists - Vršič and Mangart in one day: from Kranjska Gora over Vršič to Trenta, then to Mangart and via Italy back to KG. Altogether about 120 km and about 2400 m elevation (800 KG - Vršič and 1600 Bovec - Mangart saddle). When returning to Slovenia, note that a few meters after the motorway turnoff, or at least before the underpass under the railway, turn left onto the Alpe Adria cycle path (brown sign), which will take you to SLO along the former railway line. Last year I rode this route for the first time in the described order. Previous years I always started and ended in Bovec, which is more pleasant for me than KG, but the drive by car to Bovec from Lj via Idrija is pure torment and time-consuming. The latter is not unimportant, as such circling takes quite some time, so I always leave home in the dark to mount the bike as soon as it dawns. But unlike Rozka's variant, I never decided to go from Bovec first over Vršič and then via Predel back to SLO, but always the other way. Mainly so to get the hardest part (Mangart) done first when legs were still fresh. Last year as said first to Vršič, which I felt badly later when climbing Mangart. But probably wouldn't have profited much either if from KG first via Predel to Mangart and then from Trenta over Vršič back to KG. In that case the way to Mangart is substantially longer than from Bovec. Otherwise apparently about 200 m less elevation, which is eaten up by the ascent to Vršič from the Primorska side. That one is a bit higher than from the Gorenjska side.

A loop is a loop, direction doesn't matter. For me the road from Bovec to Trenta is harder than any climb, constantly slightly "uphill" ! Otherwise this route is a must for any serious cycling recreationalist! Nice and demanding, you need some km in the legs that season.
