Below Čmaževski Turn

Yesterday afternoon after work I felt like a ''walk''. Where to...
I drive to Žagana peč in Konec. Along the hunter's path I ascend towards the steep gully below the hut. On the first exposed traverse right before it, a craving for solitude overtakes me...
To the right I spot a modest little path.
It ends on the wide slope below both towers. I climb right under the wall of Kalški, separated from Čmaževski by a steep notch (gully) with an even steeper rocky step. Nice. I find two possible passages. Second time. Curiosity carries me on, constantly traversing under the walls. Mostly following game trails. The world is primordially wild. Numerous overhangs, deep (also exposed) gullies, walls seen for the first time... Everything goes perfectly for me all the way. Weather holds, at the ''start'' it looked really sour. On the scenic promontory the terrain finally stops me, I have to descend steeply through the brush into easier ground. Another short traverse, a bit of scrambling and... I jump out of the bushes onto the marked path (Kokrsko sedlo). Descent to the truck path stroll, I just manage to knock one back by the car. nasmeh
On Brana the sun shone meanwhile...

To not open a new topic, I posted here.
Yesterday (Friday, May 20) via the hunting path over Čmaževka, to Čmaževski turn and on to Kalški turn, then past the hunting hut to Žagana peč.

First I poked around a bit in the Čmaževka gully, then right, over the neighboring gully and under the cableway to the marked path to Kokrsko sedlo. At about 1170 m the path approaches the gully to the left strongly. Descent to the bottom of the gully was a bit annoying, exit on the other side not so, as I spotted a rusty braid next to two pitons in the grass and gladly used it.

On the other side a little path started, which soon disappeared. No problem, keep left and up. Slowly I approached the high rock barrier, to which I came via a wooded cone. Continued between two prominent rocks under the wall. A trace (maybe it was once even a path, but I'm not quite sure) led almost horizontally left under the wall to a gully with fairly fresh rockfall. A bit further the north wall of Čmaževski turn was already visible. Continued over the gully, then on through passages over scree to the gully under the turn.

The gully led steeply up along the wall to the right. Had to scramble quite a bit, difficulty somewhere between I and II grade. About sixty meters of that wall from solid gray rock. Compact, enjoyable rock was replaced higher up by thin layers of sliding gravel on rocky base. And there seemed to be no end to it. A special treat, earthy, damp and crumbling chimney was waiting a bit higher. Wouldn't be anything special if a large, dirt-covered rock hadn't rolled out of it.

Gladly I crossed right to steep grass under the overgrown edge, over which I sensed a passage. Left, at the end of the gully I came through, behind a huge slab I spotted some kind of corner, reddish color. Just in case I tried there first and to my great joy ahead of the slab spotted a friendly broken wall that led straight up. Just a few meters of nice scrambling and I was at the saddle by Čmaževski turn. And also at the junction of three little paths. One led left up to the top of the turn, the second right towards Kalška gora, the third south towards Kalški turn.

Of course I chose the first. Just a few tens of meters and I stood on top. The last meters the little path disappeared anyway, to the very top, where a shaggy, scree-covered tuft grows, had to break through the branches. I wasn't quite sure if it was the right summit. East of it stretched about 100 meters of quite exposed and hard-to-reach ridge. It ended with an overgrown summit above Žagana peč, which could be the real Čmaževski turn, but it seemed a few meters lower to me.

The path towards Kalški turn was nicely traceable. At first I looked a bit to the left if somewhere could turn towards the eastern summit of Čmaževski, but nothing sensible showed up. Next time.

At the overgrown saddle by Kalški turn it seemed to me that the path led too far down towards the hunting path from Kalc, so I took straight over the scree. After about half an hour of thrashing around I, wiser (and weaker... velik nasmeh) gave up and headed right down to the less vegetated south slope of the turn. From there to the top just a few tens of meters of scrambling from one grassy-scree ledge to another, at the end a few meters over the overgrown chimney to the top.

I descended the same chimney and ledges, a bit lower soon ran into a path, hundred meters further also the hunting path from Kalc. At the hunting hut I rested a bit, tightened my shoelaces and descended to the car at Žagana peč. At about 1000 m above sea level I spotted an unusual sign on a tree, the last 100 meters of path almost completely overgrown with white flowers.

The tour is demanding, mostly pathless with some climbing. Suitable only for well experienced and properly equipped. A bit more details on Modrini neba.. Good luck!

p.s. Pastirica, thanks for all the help and tips!

Beautiful places and great systematic explorations! I know you read the description, but Volk a year later visited/descended to a somewhat lower balcony under the broken ridge down into the gully between the towers. Of course in a slightly different variant. This Čmaževski turn is obviously such a peak for descending to the balcony https://www.gore-ljudje.si/arhiv/cmazevski-in-kalski-turn Safe and enjoy further! Thanks for the blog with ideas. lp

Thanks a lot to both, they really are magical corners! I admit, I couldn't find Stanet's blog now, but I remember reading it years ago. The reason is simple: on the pespoti.si map it says "Čemaževski" and I stuck to that name when searching for passages around there. And I entered the name with the "ški" ending in this my post too. Now I've corrected it, I trust Volk more nasmeh.

Yesterday from Žagana peč past the hunter's hut to Kalški turn and back. Weather perfect, no cars in the parking lots in Kamniška Bistrica. The start of the hunter's path behind Žagana peč was clearly visible unlike in summer days when it's hidden in undergrowth, and invitingly beckoned. A torrent a few dozen meters ahead caused some devastation, but nothing dramatic. The rocky traverse was without issues, when the path turns right into the steep gully, there was some annoyingly wet soil on the way, covered with equally wet leaves. By return everything had dried.

First snow patches started ten minutes above the hunter's hut, continuous snow a bit further, before the valley below the Turn. There the day or two old footprints I'd noticed lower down also disappeared. To my great surprise later, at the crossing into the valley I spotted ski tracks that obviously belonged to the owner of the footprints. The slopes under Kalški ridge in the context of touring skiing these days aren't exactly at the top of popular public posts. Probably also because access isn't among the most comfortable, my predecessor carried skis for at least two hours. I didn't notice tracks of skiing in the opposite direction either, so imagination had free rein. Where the hell did the stranger go?

In the valley I turned right, away from the path and ski tracks, the half-processed south snow was annoyingly crusty. The otherwise short slope towards the top of the Turn was full of traps in the form of buried brushwood. Ten meters before the comfortable, dome-like summit I broke through to my waist. With difficulty I pulled my legs out of the embrace of intertwined branches.

At the summit views into real winter. So familiar Mokrica, Kompotela, Jermanov turn, Kalški ridge and Kalška gora, all snow-covered and within reach. On the other side of the sky the main sights of Kamnik-Savinja Alps shone. Grintovec, Dolgi hrbet, Štruca, Skuta, Rinke, Turska gora, Kotliči, Brana... And a bit further back Planjava. Down there the warm wall of Kogl, Žmavčarji, and Repov kot with Špice... All occasionally shyly more or less wrapped in white mists that capriciously wandered here and there. The sight stunned me and took away any will and power from the staring to let my gaze and thoughts wander elsewhere... It was eleven o'clock. On the highest pyramid my attention was caught by a black dot where there should only be snow. After a minute or two the dot split into two dots, then merged back into one. Right below the summit the mist dropped a curtain and neither dots nor pyramid were visible anymore.

Descent from the Turn was nothing special, except the summit slope where in case of breakthrough into snow-covered brushwood loss of balance threatened and consequently a direct fall on the head. So it went slower. The hunter's path in the upper part is pure joy, lower down you need to be a bit more careful. Especially at the end of the gully before the traverse, where the path turns sharply left, straight ahead invitingly beckons a fairly trodden variant that probably unpredictably ends in the steep forest by Hlev.

A bit more in detail on Modrini neba.
