Brands

I'm interested in how much you look at quality and "brands"? I'm buying a new backpack around 20-25 liters and comparing prices and brands a bit. I've checked backpacks from The North Face, Montane, Mammut, Salewa and Mckinley and there's almost no price difference between them, even though for example all 3-4 brands are at least twice as good as Mckinley in quality? I looked online a bit too and in terms of quality The North Face is supposed to prevail over all, then right away Mammut and Montane, Salewa isn't really such a quality brand by name as they hype it in Slovenian stores - interesting, given that some products are even more expensive than The North Face. What's your opinion?

I have no complaints about what I have from Salewa. Backpack is Deuter, before had Osprey but the back didn't suit me so I changed.
Generally when buying gear I check the company's environmental policy and worker relations (aka bluesign and fair trade), what warranty etc. Then browse reviews for the product I'm interested in...

I don't know what you need (alpinism, hiking, ski touring...) I swore by Mammut, had Extreme model twice and was extremely satisfied. Newer one still used occasionally. Then bought Mammut Nirvana for ski touring also very satisfied, still using. Then about a year, maybe two, ago bought hiking Osprey Hikelite and now use it most of the time with greatest satisfaction. Light, durable, well made... If or when need something again, first check what Osprey offers nasmeh

Hiking, the main thing is it's not too big (25-30l max.) for day hikes and light. Price around 50-70eur.

Osprey Talon 22, Deuter Speed Lite 24.. Look what fits your back better, then compare details and what suits you more, Osprey has e.g. stow on the go, Deuter straps clip together etc.. just look what you need and that's it. No need to make rocket science nasmeh

Each for its purpose. Osprey Kestrel 38 will slowly be retired, a bit too big for day hikes, replaced by Tempest 30. Deuter Freerider 24 great for winter, Thule Castone 22 bought half price on mimovrste, tested only on Slivnica, so far no complaints.

For summer I have a 30l Berghaus, and it's indestructible. For winter Mammut Trion, around 45 liters.

Thanks everyone for info. The North Face has discount on backpacks now, so I ordered a 22 liter one for 80eur. Litus 22, quality wise I think no question and it will last a few years, hope only it's big enough and breathable. If not ok I'll return it and choose something else. nasmeh

@Kleemen get equipped already and go to the mountains. Where to buy jacket, where backpack, where poles, what pants to buy, then pouch, then gaiters. Go ask what underwear someone has. Backpack threads open at least three, if you'd look there you'd get answer too.
You're that old, looks like you just came down and still need a ton of tips. Man aren't you ashamed at that age not even knowing how to dress.
Then under another thread I read one didn't extinguish candle when leaving bivouac. Yeah how would he, poor guy doesn't know he has to, no one told him.
All pretty, fully equipped, just stand and look, but desert in the head.

Kleemen, North Face - worst buy, considering what you get for the money, you have a completely wrong opinion that North Face is top tier - those who wear it have too much money or are sponsored somehow. From that it follows that I don't put much stock in the brand. Most winter tours over 2k I did in McKinley or Lidl jacket. It's true I didn't look as cool as those in North Face. Regarding backpack 1. I have Mammut 30L, done more than 200 tours, have it 7 years, but this year one strap started failing - torn, so I'll get a new one. Probably Deuter or Osprey, or whichever fits my back best. Regarding McKinley, I use quite a few products, definitely most quality for little money - especially now with seasonal sales.

I'm in the mountains a couple of times weekly, so no about that.. Anyway that has nothing to do with the topic.. How someone looks is of course important, especially in recent years hiking is one of the more popular hobbies and folk go to "fashion shows" and photoshoots in the mountains, sadly some with too little gear, that's why so many more accidents than years ago. Well back to topic on gear and brands..

McKinley top, I also had McKinley backpack years ago for 30eur and it lasted quite some years, but given almost same price as e.g. The North Face it's more worth to pay 10-20eur more for The North Face. I had travel backpack and it lasted a couple years so quality is surely top, don't know where you get that only sponsored and with too much money have it zmeden McKinley I also have pants and they serve very well, so brands not important to me, main is quality. The North Face backpack I ordered to try it. In case not quality (doubt it) or don't like it I return and buy another. When I get what I like I have it for quite some years.

Statement about more accidents due to too little gear is royal. I had a good laugh for good night.

Yeah you see folk going to high mountains in regular gym shoes and such. That's too little gear for me, I don't go even to 1000m without hiking boots.

I always look with amazement at hikers with 30-40l backpacks stuffed to the brim for day hikes or overnight in huts.. Obviously it goes like this, the bigger the backpack the more unnecessary stuff gets packed in - but then the problem is carrying it up the hill.. Every extra kg of unnecessary junk in the backpack means more fatigue and consequently less secure steps, especially if there's no basic fitness..
Accidents are more due to higher traffic and popularization of mountaineering..especially winter.

I got the North Face backpack, already tested on two hikes, more than excellent and worth every euro. Exactly the one I was looking for, 22l just right size, quality, back very breathable, of all backpacks I've had surely the best, very practical, everything at hand and also nice looking. So again big plus for The North Face.velik nasmeh
