Brestovec and Debela griža (Monte San Michele)

Two strategically important peaks on the Italian Goriško Kras, which offer quite a bit of material for studying history and World War I.

The historical educational trail on Brestovec (209 m) is easy and starts at the sports field in the Cotiči hamlet. It is quite well marked and can be walked in a loop with some imagination. Walking takes about an hour, but it quickly extends to an hour or more if we delve into the remnants from World War I and the beautiful nature.

The trail can be extended on foot or by car to Debela griža / Monte San Michele (275 m), from which wide views from the Alps to the Adriatic open up in good weather. If there are no views, there is plenty of historical material here too. Otherwise, there are countless paths on the Goriško and Doberdobsko Kras laid out in memory and reminder of the Great War, which intertwine with hiking trails.

Since the sea is within reach, it would really be a sin not to drive to Sesljan, Devin or Gradež and end the excursion by the sea.

Photos taken on 22nd and 24th April 2014. Against the sparkling green Kras, it's hard to imagine that it was a stony desert here 100 years ago.
