I spotted this device Bushnell Back Track. It looks OK, small, durable, price quite normal, and since you wrote about Garmin 405, I really don't need it with 8 hours of operation. I'm interested: does anyone have this Bushnell and how does it behave in the mountains? link http://www.gajo.si/product_info.php?products_id=1694 lp

The device is fairly accurate, but of limited use in hills. You can't compare it to a GPS, it's more like a compass that remembers a few points. If at some point you turn on the path back to the start, you need to realize that it shows the exact direction, not the path. So, if you went in a semicircle around a hill, it won't show the path you walked to get there, but the straight line over the top to the other side or over the ravine if the path led on one bank and the other. It is most useful for mushroom pickers when they come from the forest to the road and are not sure whether to go to the car left or right...
