Currently I'm on a study exchange in Istanbul and among other things I really miss the hills: http://bojanambrozic.wordpress.com/2014/09/11/studijska-izmenjava-v-turciji-istanbul-univerza-sabanci/

If there's time I'd like to go to eastern Turkey, where there are higher hills.

Already in Cappadocia-near Kayseri you have the "former" volcano Erciyes dag-almost 4-thousander, which together with Hasan dag is somehow responsible for the interesting shape of Cappadocia's landscape. That's not so far from Istanbul, as it's halfway to Araratmežikanje

Nice holidays without rain you have. Near Istanbul towards SE I spotted from the plane some extensive range and not so low, some 15-20 min before landing in Istanbul from India. Check the map a bit, otherwise enjoy and make use of what's givennasmeh.

@ Viharnik: Turkey is a very mountainous country with average elevation over 1000 m. 20 min by plane is 300 km, which is far.

@Jonny: I'll say hi to Matjaž. Here in uni campus we have a climbing wall. So we go climbing. Matjaž is off to Kalymnos in two weeks for Turkish holidays to climb, where Petzl Roc Trip will be, with all world climbing stars. Sadly I'm not joining, cuz (temporarily) I'm coming home.

Near Istanbul, more precisely above Bursa is Uludag, otherwise the most popular ski resort for Istanbulites. But I have no idea what it looks like from the plane.
