Please for advice, but don't "bite" me right away when I ask. zadrega

So, we are a family (dad, mom, 3 kids 8,6,3 years), who have hiked a lot of mid-mountain areas from Primorska to Styria. Slowly the little one is old enough and keen to go a bit higher. There on some paths the danger of falling rocks starts. For starters I don't mean secured paths, but paths that run under walls for a while (to Vodnik Hut, to Corsi Hut...). I'm wondering if at least for the beginning "acceptable" use of bike helmet for kids (dad has the real one anyway nasmeh), since they don't make mountaineering ones for such small heads.
Hope I wasn't too long, thanks for CONSTRUCTIVE replies.

Better a bike helmet than nothing on the head.

But the function of a bike helmet is in principle a bit different from a mountaineering one, the latter should basically protect you from falling rocks, bike one protects you more in direct fall on the head.

Minus of bike helmet is that it has vents. So there is a risk that just one stone falls on your head where the vent is.

etc
If the kid has a ski helmet, for those few minutes when crossing the dangerous slope, it's safer than bike one. But I agree that bike is better than nothing. Also from educational point of view.

My personal opinion: if you are a director or have a director's salary, then get all the necessary new equipment as soon as possible. No point saving where there's no need, and traders have to live off something too.
If you are not a director and it's hard to shell out those euros, then just use the bike one. Tol already explained it to you. After all, once you realize the danger and necessity of (self)protection, a lot is already done. We also used a bike helmet in our family - simply couldn't afford for everyone.

For medium ones a bit of math:
Say you take Petzl Picchu helmet (kids model), price is 42.30 €. If you are PZS member (for kids family discount 4 €), you get 10% discount casually, which then costs you around 38 €. If you find some more % discount, even better. Then photocopy the receipt, photocopy the hiking card with paid membership and send it all to insurance Tilia, which reimburses you 15 € for helmet purchase and so you actually get a new kids mountaineering helmet for just over 20 €.

Thanks for the answers.
Penzionist I didn't know this about the insurance thanks. I checked those helmets, but the 3-year-old's head is a bit small. Of course I ask exactly because safety is my first priority. But as atoamac said at the beginning it's only for a few minutes crossings.
