Circular Hiking Trail PENTLJA

FIRST part: Brezovica - Podpeč - Brezovica

In Ljubljana they have set up a new thematic trail across the Barje and its slightly higher surroundings. It's called Pentlja, about 80 km long, with stamps and logbooks on individual sections. More on this topic here ... CLICK

Such things are just our style and for a taste we chose the official start of the trail in Brezovica, climbed to the hills above it, later descended to Primorka, continued across the Barje towards Podpeč and returned to the starting point from the other side. In between we hiked some nice little hills, just right for stretching the legs. Asphalt on this section only where there's no other way, the rest is gravel or forest paths. All in all it made for a beautiful 27 km trail and 600 m elevation nasmeh.

Full praise to the initiators of Pentlja and the markers who marked it. Except for a few minor issues on the return, this section is excellently marked. Once those deficiencies are fixed, no map will be needed at all. More in the photo story ...

SECOND part: Podpeč - Krim - Podpeč

Wet days, as well as curiosity were responsible for continuing on the Pentlja. From Podpeč we set off towards Kamnik pod Krimom, Dolenje Brezovice and Krim, and returned via Planince and Jezero to the start. This loop is a reasonable variant in case of unstable weather. We walked some asphalt, some gravel, quite a bit of forest paths too. In our direction some markings missing for novices, but no major issues finding the way. In total 27 km and 1100 m elevation.

Coordinates of starting point (parking before Mercator): 45.973688, 14.420522

We park in Podpeči in front of Mercator and head right.1
We walked on the brand new sidewalk even before the official opening.2
Up to the end of Podpeči we were already sharing the road with cars. No sign of a sidewalk.3
Sad mountain, sad weather.4
The stamping box with stamp is attached to the right side of the stairs.5
We continue in the direction of Kamnik pod Krimom.6
Here there is a whole bunch of old homesteads.7
There are also quite a few religious landmarks.8
Preserje and the church of St. Vitus. The path turns right just before the church.9
At these playgrounds we turn left. No Pentlja sign visible here.10
Towards Ponikve.11
The Pentlja sign appears again.12
Football club Ponikve.13
There's not much more than a few homesteads around here.14
Dolenja Brezovica.15
Here the path turns left into the forest.16
We walk gently for several kilometers on gravel.17
Shrine at Kavcu. Small, nicely arranged.18
For your information ... digging is strictly prohibited :)19

Bagi,
welcome to Ljubljansko barje.
I forwarded your opinion on certain unmarked sections of the Pentlja path to the marker of PD Podpeč-Preserje. The guys are happy for any praise and respond to criticism too. On the path sections you mentioned (photo 51), marked with arrows, there were signposts. But sadly people are quite different, some like new paths, others don't. Sadly vandalism happens here too, like in other places in Slovenia. As said, signposts were there, but unfortunately ended up in Ljubljanica or local ditch.
Sadly awareness of individuals is at Neanderthal level. The signposts themselves are quality made, from quality thick wood with metal plate on top and thus not exactly cheap. Happy and safe on the remaining stages. best regards

THIRD part: Rakitna - Osredek - Rakitna - Krim - Rakitna

We did the remaining part of Pentlja, which this time fully justified its name. In good nine hours we hiked two roughly equal loops, connected in the middle into a figure-eight. That middle was Rakitna, where we parked in first morning light on the large parking lot in front of the church.

So we started in Rakitna, past Mladinsko zdravilišče continued towards Osredek and looped back to Rakitna via Ustje. In between we waded deep twice to the Zala river. First crossed on newer bridge, at confluence with Iška with shoes around neck velik nasmeh. This part of Pentlja is about 15 km with 900 m elevation.

From Boršt, upper part of Rakitna we turned right again, visited nearby summit Rotovc, continued to Krim and looped back on well marked Pentlja. To make return not too short, path turns towards Smrekovec and Novaška gora, back to Rakitna past the lake.

In the third part total 36 km and 1600 m elevation accumulated. Given the season we hiked from first to last light. But this part can elegantly be split into two independent not too strenuous ones. Also careful when wet crossing Zala. Best crossing right at confluence. A bit higher pools too deep or current too strong. Won't cross with shoes on, so towel and spare socks handy.

SUMMARY:
Planinska pot Pentlja is definitely an enrichment in the offer of thematic paths around Ljubljana. Just diverse enough and not too strenuous, interesting in all seasons. Once again praise to the markers for great work. In total we measured 83 km and over 3000 m pure Pentlja elevation (Garmin Montana 610). Our variants split in three parts add a few more km. Recommended nasmeh.

Farmstead near which they felled and loaded a 65 m long spruce intended for the jamboree.6
Pentlja marker and direction towards Osredk.7
Late autumn. The trees have almost completely lost their leaves.8
Bear nearby. It successfully hid from us :)9
First crossing of the Zala river on a good bridge. It is covered with tegola, so shoes don't slip even when wet.10
There are enough markers and regardless of the direction of travel they are well visible.11
The fog was rising and falling without any sensible explanation.12
I photographed the beehive from the road, but a weirdo nearby still asked me who allowed me to do that.13
Old name of the farmstead. The house is of course right next to the church :)14
Church of St. Primož and Felicijan in Osredk.15
Osredk is a long village and we walked on asphalt for a while.16
Towards Vrbica.17
We started descending. The fog was still persistently accompanying us.18
Iška River.19
Preparations for wet crossing. The path continues on the opposite bank of Zala.20
The river is best crossed right at the confluence of Zala and Iška.21
With shoes, there's no other way than to take them off.22
Finally well-washed feet :)23
Continuation and start of the steep ascent towards Ustje.24
The path is well laid out, slightly mysterious in the fog.25
Obviously another themed trail, densely marked with triangles.26
Return to Rakitno and end of the first loop.27
We continue towards Rotovec above Boršt.28
There is a stamp and the Pentlja logbook on it.29
St. Nicholas hasn't arrived yet, but it's welcome anyway :)30
Towards Krim31
We followed the good gravel road for quite a few kilometers.32
It was Sunday and the hut on Krim was well visited as always.33
Our direction to Rakitno, but not by the shortest route.34
Lower down we plunged again into thick fog.35
Continuation from the previous visit to Pentlja.36
When I grow up, the trail marker will be big too :)37
On Smrekovec, the hill on the right side of the road from Podpeči towards Rakitno.38
Another peak in the ridge, this time Novaška gora. This is the control point.39
So it's known that this is the summit :)40
No doubt about it.41
We returned to Rakitno past the lake.42
Return to the start and end of the second loop. The day was already departing.43

On Prešeren Day there was an interesting challenge, to hike the entire Pentlja in one single day. For better understanding, the mentioned path is 83 km long, with over 3000 m elevation.

17 participants gathered at Brezovica and started at an inhuman hour zavijanje z očmi. Some as supporters, others with too big ambitions, some with realistic ones. Decisive were mainly broken-in shoes, moderate steady pace and experience with all-day hikes. It showed that with all that even an ordinary hiker can manage such a long path in one day without special issues. Congratulations nasmeh

Yesterday before the municipal ban we also did the northern part of Pentlja. From Brezovica we went over Gradišče and Debeli hrib to Plešivica, then through Notranje gorice cut to Veliki vrh and back to the car via Podpeška road. Very nicely routed trail section, really avoids asphalt to the max. The stamps on this part are all in place too, wonder how long they'll stayzavijanje z očmi. Threatening clouds were chasing around all the time, but luckily no rain. Great day on the marshnasmeh.

Very well marked trail equipped with direction signs. The time estimates aren't always accurate, e.g. from Rakitna to Novaška gora you arrive sooner than in one hour, also from Novaška gora to Smrekovec it's less walking, from Podpeč to Veliki vrh it's a good hour's walk and not two and a half. But that's fine, because then you're in a good mood since you used less time than planned. The section between Rovtovec and Vrbica requires caution also because the path is covered with leaves and you don't know what's underfoot. I myself fell somewhere halfway because a cone got under my boot. Overall very nice, watch out for ticks in the Zala gorge.

Hello,
in February I completed the circular hiking trail Pentlja in sections. For those who will still hike it, I'm posting some fresh information... Since February was quite "wet", from Plešivica instead of through the moor I had to go along that long road to Podpeč. It's doable, but the embankment by the road is quite narrow and I admit, I was a bit nervous nasmeh Another slightly more liquid part is the descent on that section past Rakitna and Trenk, all the way to Vrbica - that part really needs dry weather, otherwise you'll probably slide straight into the streambed nasmeh I did it yesterday and it wasn't problematic, but as said, in dry conditions. The river crossing was wading nasmeh specifically far right, behind the big rock - lowest water there. Elsewhere crossings over rivers and streams are arranged, also from Osredka over the footbridge, just a bit wobbly. Probably three quarters of the trail runs through bear area, and since I hiked it alone, I had a bell and just in case animal spray (never had to use it). As for stamps, all 18 can be found, maybe I'd highlight only the one before Ponikve at the house by Tujec - stamp on the right side on the rock directly opposite the house across the path, right before Ponikve, already down under the road. Ponikve were a bit hard to pass end of February, splashed into water twice, but it's passable. Anyway, beautiful, interesting trail with quite a few challenges, but I warmly recommend it <3

Just boldly go on the trail!
Bear usually spots you first and avoids you.
I was scared too, because I was alone and descended into Zale gully when dusk was falling. But no disturbances (just my talking to myself velik nasmeh)
I did the whole thing in two days sleeping in a sleeping bag in the open garage of the hotel on Rakitna mežikanje

Kafetarca, thank you so much! I planned to go alone, that's what suits me best, because I like walking in peace and listening to nature sounds. For that reason I did the trail in several parts - to avoid excessive strain, possible injuries and to really experience the trail and imprint memories of each section separately. Regarding logistics, I had arranged transport a few times in advance, or bus connection, which isn't bad in the municipality.
Go boldly, it's true... I've hiked a lot in bear area already, but never encountered one on the trail nasmeh
