CIRCULAR PATH AROUND THE LASTOVICE + VELIKI NABOJS

We started the tour in Zajzera and headed along the forest path to the Luigi Pellarini hut. When we reached the junction along a slightly steeper trail, we turned towards Prašnik saddle, Trbiška škrbina and Žabniška škrbina (Sella Carnizza) and then descended along a partly secured path (I think a new one) to the Pellarini hut. Since we were still early, we climbed to Veliki Nabojs and then past the hut back to the starting junction and down to Zajzera. The circular path around the Lastovice is very scenic, diverse and picturesque. The path is well marked, only when ascending towards Žabniška škrbina along the stream you need to be a bit careful not to lose the path. We followed the water there and got slightly off track. Need to stick to the right side. Little visited path, but worth it. nasmeh

Our swallows have already flown south a while ago, so on the first October day this year I visited the Italian ones velik nasmeh

To the circular path around Lastovke (Lastovic; also Lastavic) – Italian Anello delle Rondini – I went from parking lot no. 2 in Zajzera, first ascended to Pellarini hut, from there continued to Žabniška škrbina, descended to Trbiška krnica, crossed the eastern foothills of Lastovic along the road to Prašnik saddle, from there under the western walls of this interesting group of five peaks to the end of the circular path and back to the start.

From Zajzera to the hut I took some mix of thematic and marked paths, I'm not quite sure where I actually walked zavijanje z očmi – but the signs towards the hut were in the right places, even where I lost the marks... After about an hour I reached the lower station of the cargo cableway, there the real ascent began. After half an hour I arrived at the path junction – left to Prašnik saddle and right to Pellarini hut – where I started and ended the "looping", which took about four hours of walking. With ever better views I soon reached the (already closed for the season, but supposed to be open on 7th and 8th October) hut, had a small refreshment and continued towards Žabniška škrbina, the notch between the Front (it. Rondini) and Rear swallows (it. Vergine or Device). There, besides views to the peaks above Mrzla voda valley and towards our Julijci, curious horned locals (I assume mother and daughter) welcomed me, keeping me company until departure nasmeh.

Above the notch I looked for the most suitable "path" to the Fifth Swallow (Italians count it as first), but already beyond the hardest part, soon after crossing a quite exposed ledge with almost no holds, the descent worried me, so I turned back immediately (otherwise without issues), as the thought of it on the way to the summit and back would peck too much at my guts zavijanje z očmi The horned ones didn't care much about my "safety/mental issues" and kindly accompanied me when I headed to Trbiška krnica mežikanje On the descent from the notch I saw another, seemingly easier ascent route, maybe try next time…

The path to Trbiška krnica above Mrzla vode valley is somewhat more demanding due to erosion, locally secured with cables – similar to the previously walked path under the other side of the notch – but still well traceable. From it, a path branches right soon towards Trbiška škrbina (broken signs), but I continued descending. Somewhere at the bottom of the cirque, the path to Škrbina Bele Vode (Carla Pupisa path) branches right, from there I walked along marks for a few minutes, then started following the old (un)marked path that they probably "abolished" due to a nastier gully where there's no "path" anymore; the current marked path when reaching the cart track Mrzla vode valley – Prašnik loses about 100m elevation compared to the mentioned one. When I reached the cart track, with pleasant company of the Swallows I continued to the mentioned saddle, where I chose path no. 617 connecting Višarje with Pellarini hut. Since it mostly runs through forest, no great views from it, until the path approached the wall of the Second Swallow (it. fourth), from there a few dozen minutes to close the loop, and almost an hour to "no.2".

Morning was quite fresh, in the shade of Žabniška krnica one had to wait for the sun until the notch. Paths mostly well marked, just here and there need to check direction twice – especially due to erosion effects.

Nice, wild piece of Julijci.

There aren't many descriptions of the beautiful Lastovice ridge at home, but enough to tempt us to walk around them. Connecting the beautiful Zajzera and Mrzla voda valleys into one tour promises some of the best in these parts. Especially the views of them from Zajzera are something that doesn't leave one indifferent, as their backdrop is a continuation of the famous Viševa group.

After reading descriptions on this site and posts by Italian hikers (there are quite a few more), we decided to go clockwise, that is from the junction below Pellarini to the left. The nice path almost along the walls of Lastovice took us to Prašnik saddle, where we first stepped into the sun that day, and saw the slopes of Kamniti lovec above us. This was familiar to us, as we once went there via Mrzla voda valley and looked for the branch-off here. Back then we got a bit confused, now the signs are nicely in place and continuing to Kamniti lovec is no problem. Followed some viewless section of the path, but soon we stepped in front of the faces of the mountains above Beli potok valley and at the same time the eastern side of quite densely vegetated Lastovice. We continued on the path towards Mrzla voda valley, but soon found the branch right over scree that eases the ascent to Trbiška cirque. You continue descending for a while, cross one slightly annoying gully, but no issues. Then another junction, but the path first lured us to the bivouac in Mrzla voda (Bivacco Carnizza di Riofreddo), as it wasn't far off. Then through the beautiful Trbiška cirque, which was new to both of us, to Žabniška notch and then descent via Žabniška cirque to the start.
Meanwhile we looked towards Trbiška škrbinica, as the view there was also new, we also identified the quite pointy peak in that direction, which should be Il Pinnacolo 2283 m, bordering Trbiška peak on the left, and Divja koza on the right.

The highest point of our tour was Žabniška notch, which requires quite a bit of attention and caution from both sides. On the ascent to it from our side the fixed cables (2) are of great help, on the further descent into Žabniška cirque there are partly cables too, but so heavily scree-covered that large pieces can fly from under your feet and heaven forbid something hits the hiker below you. So helmet is highly recommended in this section, I think the path is less strenuous difficulty-wise if ascending here rather than descending. Maybe the recent storms did their thing here.

The path was very much to our liking, definitely worth repeating in the same or opposite direction, but we missed the sun, as we didn't get it neither in Trbiška nor later in Žabniška cirque. Well, end of October, and in many otherwise beautiful mountain corners, the sun doesn't shine anymore.

This topic title might need correction to Circular path around LASTOVIC, because it's not about swallows but ledges, shelves that we see on the western side of these mountains nasmeh. But names vary, anyway.
