I used Windows Movie Maker, which is part of Windows. Open start -> programs -> accessories.

Using a song from a lesser-known band won't cause problems, famous songs will be quickly deleted or disabled. Another option is to ask the band for permission to use it. Youtube has collected some songs just for this purpose, which are already "approved" by the authors. (see AudioSwap function), but you won't find famous authors in this list.
