Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee

The Via Ferrata delle Trincee runs through the Crepes de Padon range, which rises above the Passo di Fedaia pass. On the opposite side of this pass and the lake of the same name lies the mighty Marmolada with its glacier. These two mountain groups couldn't be more different. Crepes de Padron are of volcanic origin, much lower than the mighty neighbor, peaks mostly green with darker rock. This is rounded, smoother conglomerate with poor grip and high slipperiness.

The hardest part of the ferrata runs along numerous towers from the Forcella Europa saddle to the intermediate grassy rise, which I couldn't find a name for. We two got here. The ferrata continues further through numerous military positions, but we ran out of nerve here velik nasmeh. There are extremely few markers and we missed the right direction. We ended up on a poorly marked path through military positions one floor lower and in good faith that we were on the right track. The path soon became an exposed track and somehow we didn't see the point in continuing. So we went back a bit and crossed to the lower geological path. Not the only ones, which shows lack of markings in the ferrata direction.

It has a C/D section in the initial part, then up to C. The bigger issue is the smooth rock, which doesn't offer quality steps and holds. You simply have to get used to it. Protections are sufficient, exposed parts too. Tower follows tower, particularly interesting is the almost vertical Sasso dell'eremita, you don't even need to go there, as it's a separate section and more for dessert nasmeh. Right behind it the ferrata turns left around the massif along military positions to the other side of the range and a bit further to the point of our blunder. Whoever walks around here should continue directly from the smaller saddle across the grassy summit, below which there are several descent paths.

Despite the path change we had a great continuation nasmeh. Along the Sentiero Geologico Arabba path we reached the Rif. Padon hut, descended to the valley and circled Lago di Fedaia lake on the old, closed-to-traffic road.

Parking coordinates (western part of Passo di Fedaia): 46.463964, 11.862215
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Calm morning and lake Lago di Fedaia1
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Direction signs are at the awkwardly placed bus stop. We choose path 6982
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee On the opposite side of the lake, the peaks of Marmolada are already glowing3
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee The first sun also illuminates our route. The rocks here are more rounded and with a different surface4
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Somewhat below the Forcella Europa pass we first spot the marker for the Trincee ferrata5
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Entrance wall. Two youngsters are having considerable trouble progressing6
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee We are not spared either. There are very few handholds and footholds and they are not very useful7
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Higher up it's better, the wall flattens slightly, the rock breaks up in cracks8
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee The feel on these rocks is unusual. Although early, a kind of warmth radiates from them9
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee The next vertical wall awaits us10
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Here it goes easier already. Some cable handling is needed for progression, shoes hold11
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee This is roughly how the terrain we are traversing looks12
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee After the initial climb we enter the area of numerous towers13
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee The views are for the calendar and we enjoy every moment :)14
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Connecting ridges between towers …15
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee The steel cables are mostly tensioned, though some looser ones are found16
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee An interesting tower appears before us. We don't know yet that we'll soon be on it :)17
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Almost completely new cables run to the right to its foot18
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Hmm, this one is not straightforward. The tower stands quite vertically19
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee In the upper part two routes lead to it, one for ascent, the other for descent20
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Both are excellently equipped and difficulties reach at most C category21
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee In the lower part of the tower there is also a third variant over smooth slabs22
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Sasso dell'eremita. We were just on this summit.23
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee We return some 10 m back and continue along the Trincee via ferrata. The more military part of the path begins.24
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee In many places, there are still steps carved in the rock from the First World War, and the steel cable also serves its purpose.25
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee In this part of the via ferrata, we are specifically descending. We have already gotten used to the unusual rocks.26
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Military outpost, most resembling an eagle's nest :)27
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee From here too follows a steep descent to the next ledge…28
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee And another one, and another one….29
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Occasionally, a small space for a short rest is found.30
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee There are not a few difficult passages, but all are secured. There is also very little scree.31
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Slowly we circle the massif and move to the other side of the ridge all the way to a smaller saddle.32
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee We are already lost. We move along military positions, but the path is getting narrower. Hmm???33
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Slowly we turn around and carefully return to the well-trodden path into the valley.34
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Along it, we cross to the lower path Sentiero Geologico Arabba marked 680.35
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee We are not alone. Below us on the grassy plateaus are countless locals :)36
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Our new direction… Rifugio Padon hut.37
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee View back to the comfortable path and a mighty glacier in the background.38
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Due to the proximity of the pass and the chairlift, there are many visitors at the hut and we hardly find any shade for rest.39
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee On this slab on the left side, we explored the Eterna via ferrata the previous day.40
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Lago di Fedaia. On the right is the new road, on the left the old one, closed to traffic.41
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee Eastern part of Passo di Fedaia pass. Here we turn onto the old road.42
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee The lake's water level is incredibly low. At least 10 m short to the edge of the vegetation.43
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee View of the lake. The car is there and we are slowly completing the loop.44
Crepes de Padon Range and Via Ferrata delle Trincee GPS track of the hiked path. It came to 11 km and 800 elevation meters.45

At those ruins/forts you shouldn't descend into them, but continue past them (on the left side) along the ridge (a few meters ahead there is a big marker). The trail ahead is easy to follow and marked, the difficulty is much less than in the first half. In the tunnels you need a headlamp, but they are not too long.
