Data on elevation along individual paths

Yesterday we were chatting a bit and realized that we interpret differently what the data on elevation gain along the path means. E.g. the path Stara Fužina - Triglav Lakes has elevation 1.085 m, elevation gain along the path is 1.500 m (http://www.hribi.net/izlet/stara_fuzina_koca_pri_triglavskih_jezerih_cez_vogar_in_stapce/1/133/111 ). I'm interested whether the difference between elevation gain and elevation gain along the path (in this specific case 415 m) represents additional ascent or perhaps descent + ascent (that is half of that down and half up again) during the path. In short, will we ascend to Triglav Lakes by 1.500 m or by less than 1.300 m (=1.085 + (415/2))? I hope I wrote the matter understandably ?

If the elevation gain differs from that "along the path", it means there is one or more descents on the ascent path. In the specific case Stara Fužina - Hut at Triglav Lakes via Štapce, there are two longer descents and some shorter ones. Total around 400 m descent. If descending the same path, it means approximately 400 m ascent awaits you on descent.

Those 400 m that we descend during the ascent, we also include during the ascent, right? So, when ascending, we descend in between approx. 400 m and then ascend those same 400 m to reach the lakes? In short, on the path to the lakes we must hike 1500 m ascent (clearly, we also descend the difference in between)?

That's right. On the ascent path, 1500 m elevation gain is made.
