Hello!
For a couple of years in autumn I've noticed that during walks and hikes in the forest 'deer flies' attack me: https://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jelenova_muha
I've figured out it's worst where there's lots of leaves on the ground, but they appear even just like that. Most I've seen on Pugled, also on Ljubljana's Golovec, and last time on Svinjak...
When I mention it to others, they look at me like I've lost my head, 'cause supposedly no one's seen these nasty bugs.
Has anyone else run into these?? Or do I have some weird "luck" they only wait for me?

They attack me too in autumn when I'm in the forest, otherwise I don't meet them on all paths, on some there are quite a lot and really annoying.. so you're not alone with this problem

Very annoying. They most like to move around ears, neck, crawl under shirt and pants. Their bite hurts and itches me from 14 days to three weeks...If lucky I get one bite,otherwise mandatory on multiple spots. Most in mixed forests, oak and beech. Fly swarm increases with increased sweating. Self-defense with various repellents completely ineffective.

Are these the flat flies you can hardly get rid of when they find you. We call them horse flies.

In Pohorje it was annoying in the June mushroom growth wave. What kind they were, don't know. But there were tons, like fine snowing. Outside forest more aggressive. Never seen so many.
Mushrooms were abnormally many too then.

@dprapr, on those white flies you mention I've also run into a few times, always at the same spot. Just passed by and they swarmed from the trees, so I rather ran that part of the path

Has anyone found what helps against these devilish deer/horse flies? Except running away fast...
They really are incredibly awful, hard to swat, keep appearing from nowhere. Interesting I never saw them till 2020, since then they bug me every fall. :/

The one like snowing was beech aphid. Most of them in spring
