For Easter I still caught some water in the drying Doberdob Lake, which I descended to via hiking trail No. 78 from the junction for Doberdob at Boneti. Although the trail is marked with fresh hiking markers, there are two warnings that hiking is prohibited because it crosses private land. Maybe they haven't removed the warnings yet?

I started the trip at the Gradina Welcome Center, reachable from the center of Doberdob. The Welcome Center is at a viewpoint above Doberdob Lake in the nature reserve of Doberdob and Prelosno Lakes.
I walked the scenic Path past the hillfort to the Cadorna House and climbed to Gradina. I could have returned to the start over the slopes of Črni hrib on trail No. 72. Instead, I went past the Cadorna House and climbing area down to Doberdob Lake and the viewpoint in the middle of the divide. Since the lake loop trail didn't get me to the water, I returned to the car the way I came. Then I drove to Debelo Griža (Monte San Michele) for views of the Julian Alps and back to Boneti. After a photo stop at the lake, there followed an ascent to Gradina where I barely caught the sunset.
While icy bora was blowing on the northern side of Debelo Griža, it was really hot on the southern slopes of Gradina, especially when I dashed up the steep trail from the lake into the hill. For lovers of walks on the Karst. Good footwear doesn't hurt.

Yesterday with PD Rašica Ljubljana on winter Karst. Almost hard to say winter, because no snow anywhere, but bora is. Our hike went like this - Doberdob - Nova vas - Županov vrh (238m) - Kremenjak (345m) - Sela (treat) - descent to Brestovica. We walked about 15km in four and a half hours - stops not included.

To Doberdob you can arrive from three directions - from highway A4 Venezia-Trieste, from Gorizia and from Trieste. Doberdob is a settlement on the western edge of Karst in Italy. This mostly Slovenian settlement is only 5km north of Tržič (Monfalcone). It is the largest settlement on the Doberdob plateau. In the nearby karst depression is the intermittent Doberdob lake. On the nearby Gradišče hill are remains from Roman times. It was a bloody scene of battles during WWI. Here ran the defensive line of the Austro-Hungarian Soča front, which they firmly defended against Italians. Here many young Slovenian boys fell. Hence the saying - Doberdob grave of Slovenian boys. Still today defensive trenches and numerous caverns are well visible. It belongs to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, south Devin-Nabrežina and Tržič, west Ronke and Foljan-Sredipolje. There are eleven villages in the Doberdob municipality area.

From Doberdob we drove to Gradina, where there is a wonderful historical-natural history museum that must be seen. In this center cultural and historical features of Karst and its flora, fauna and protection are shown and presented interactively. We feel as if we are in the middle of nature - unique. Soundwise we hear rustling and babbling of water, whistling of birds of prey, cannon shots. At each scene different sounds. We see everything from cave bear, collection of karst butterflies, models of prehistoric hillfort to traces of WWI.

The path then led us along the marked path to the shelter high above the depression where the lake is. This time only water channels were visible. But extensive. Then via fixed cables up the ridge path and continue to Nova vas, Županov vrh, Kremenjak. In between we of course cross the Italian-Slovenian border (we hardly notice it) and finally arrive in the village Sela, where we have real karst treat with prosciutto, teran etc. Then followed descent to the valley to Brestovica.
