Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants

Every mountain range has some of its own characteristics by which you remember it. The Dolomites Puez Odle are adorned with long wide slopes, grassy traverses similar to our Košuta, comfortable, nicely routed paths and more could be found. There are also some mighty ones, but most don't have marked paths leading to them. Where they do, they're not too difficult. Ferratas are mostly A/B category, there are also some C sections, but few.

We chose circular paths where possible and visited all marked summits in the area. Nowhere did we have issues with markings or poor fixed protection. Everything is maintained and tidy. A peculiarity of this area is that you don't feel like you're in Italy at all velik nasmeh. It's more Tyrolean overall, plus most speak the native Ladin language, completely incomprehensible to me. No issues with communication in huts though, they make an effort and accommodate you. In short, very nice and happily hiked nasmeh. More in the photo story ...

Coordinates of starting point (Passo Gardena): 46.549827, 11.808605

Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants For warming up we tried the via ferrata on Mali Cir (Pice Cir).3
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants The via ferrata is B/C category and circular. Due to its proximity to the pass it is well visited, the rocks are polished.4
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants After descending from Mali Cir we continued to Veliki Cir (Gran Cir). The via ferrata to it has difficulty A/B.5
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants View from Veliki Cir to Val Longia valley, which we will cross in its upper part the same day.6

Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants We also admired a beautiful Dolomites tower ... Sassongher.14
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants A not difficult, mostly sandy path leads to it.15
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants The summit is an excellent viewpoint in all directions.16
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants The day was shortening and we began looking for accommodation. Due to the following plans we chose Rif. Puez hut.17

Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants We descended on the opposite side. This via ferrata also has difficulty B/C30
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants The descent partly runs over abundant scree, all the way to the junction of our route left to Forcelo dal'Ega via path 1331
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants We are almost across. Due to unusually warm weather, we were running out of water32
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants Now we are across. The descent from the saddle is initially a bit crumbly due to the rock composition, but soon all OK33
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants We are heading towards Rif. Genova hut. Rocks gradually give way to grassy terrain34

Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants The only marked summit on this path is the rocky Tullen.46
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants That's us :)47
Dolomites Puez Odle - among friendly giants After descending from Tullna, we continue along Messner. The rocks lose their dominance, with more and more greenery.48

Dolomites Puez Odle we explored lengthways and crossways some time ago, not everything due to logistics of course. This time we visited on a circular path two more wonderful viewpoints above Badia valley, starting right from the home village. Paths are neat, well marked and easy to follow. Marking method is a bit special but you get used to it quickly.

Among others we visited Rif. Puez hut where we overnighted before. The experience with the hut staff wasn't the best then, which is extremely rare in the Dolomites. And not only ours. This time completely different. New team, despite season end still extremely friendly. Recommend nasmeh. More on the whole path in the photostory …

Coordinates of the starting point (La Villa): 46.581702, 11.897374
Parked in the village of La Villa, as usual early in the morning.1
Following path 11 towards Rif. Gardenacia hut.2
The weather is still a bit changeable, sunshine coming.3
The path to the hut is exceptionally well groomed.4
These locals are everywhere around here and not shy at all :)5
Gardenacia hut with excellent cappuccino. Closes this week.6
Viewpoint Para dai Giai, one of our goals.7
Interesting marking. On both sides of the valley they use the same numbers.8
Approach path to our first peak.9
Para dai Giai with a huge cross so it can be seen from the valley.10
Approximately such are the proportions11
The landmark Sassongher, this time from an unusual angle12
We continue on path 15, the mists are slowly thinning13
Unusual sandy hill Col dala Sone along the path14
We go again to visit Rif. Puez hut. We recently slept there15
We are already at the hut. The caretaking team is now different, the experience incomparably better16
From the hut we follow path number 1, the landscape is very beautiful17
Unmistakable :)18
Full of small ponds everywhere19
In between we detour to this summit too …20
… to Piza de Gherdenacio, unfortunately again partly in mist21
View towards higher neighbours with the already traversed Piza de Poz in the foreground22
As soon as we descend a bit, the sun greets us23
We visit another excellent viewpoint, accessible via path 1A24
It is well marked, but keep to the left direction25
The two of us on the summit of Col Plo Alt, a 2314 m high viewpoint26
From its summit there's plenty to see :) Below Badia, behind the Fanes massif27
We return to the one, its descent into the valley is quite a small surprise28
It runs along an extremely steep slope, the path is secured with wire rope several times29
The little path is narrow and exposed in places30
Below it levels out and runs almost horizontally to the right towards La Villa.31
Along the path … Lech de Sompunt lake.32
Another view of the lower part of La Villa.33
And to conclude …34
GPS track of the hiked path. It recorded 21 km and 1600 m of ascent.35

The Puez-Odle group happened at the end of September. I'd had it in mind for a while because it seems extremely interesting for ski touring antics, especially the extravagant descent down the Val Scura gully between Sassongher and Ores de Sassongher, which requires a rope descent on the way down the valley. Suitable for very good touring enthusiasts - a local told me the last season was bad, the one before so good that he skied the gully without 'abseil'. nasmeh

My trip was in dry conditions, but since snow fell just before I arrived in the Dolomites, I encountered it here and there as samples and everywhere it had turned into icy patches. Still, it didn't cause me any trouble.
Past the Gardenacia hut, I headed under the cliffs of Para dai Giai towards Sassongher saddle, turned right shortly before it onto a steep scree path and visited points 2615 m and 2635 m, which offer not only a fantastic view of Sassongher and its SE turreted ridge, but also the volcano-like cone Col dala Soné, which I reached after descending to the plains, from which I continued through pathless-ridge terrain to the summit. Pathlessness in terms of orientation is no obstacle to reaching the top, just don't shy away from scree. I descended north, circled it halfway and finally rejoined the marked path that led me to the hut named after the highest in the mountain group. Past the 'martinčkarji' enjoying drinks and food, I headed to the mentioned summit, Piza de Puez, and en route checked out the continuation to the little-known summit Muntejela. When I reached its highest stone, I looked east again. It wasn't far to the next 'unknown' Ciampani. Finally I had everything planned in place, so I descended past Col Toronn (not the one above Jummy hut at 2655 m) and continued across green meadows past many marmot holes to Gardenacia hut and on towards 'civilization'.

The mountain group isn't as crowded as many others in the Dolomites area, but no less interesting because of that. Perhaps even more so...
Section of the path to the Gardenacia hut, particularly pleasant in summer when the walls protect from the sun in the morning hours.1
Traverse above the hut with a view of Para dai Giai.2
When you are here, you can hardly wait to catch sight of the rest of the playful NE ridge of Sassongherja.3
And finally you see it, the perfectly flat summit :)4
On the path towards the elevations 2616 and 2635, my most desired peak on the Cole dala Soné tour.5
Sassongher from elevation 2615 m.6
On the adjacent side of the saddle at 2635 m.7
Pathless, rocky and above all steep ascent to Cole dala Soné.8
The desired summit is almost there.9

And also the approach from the north to the summit Pitla Piza de Puez or. Col de Puez.14

I continue there - Muntejela; right Cole dala Soné16
Along the white line to the top17
I continue to Ciampani (middle); behind it from Nü-ja on the left to the Fanes group, Tofane de Rozes and Sas de Stria on the right18

Piz de Puez – 2913 m

Piz de Puez is almost the house summit of the central hut in the Puez group, named, of course, Rifugio Puez velik nasmeh. Despite the height it's easily accessible, so anyone with some fitness can go for it. The path is routed in numerous switchbacks, so it's not strenuous nor much exposed.

We headed for it from La Villa, more precisely from in front of Santa Maria Assunta church. First we took path 11 to Rif. Gardenaccia hut, which got a new extension this year. It has a larger kitchen and new rooms. From the hut we continued on 11 to the indistinct summit Piz de Gherdenacia. The path there is wonderful, open and very gentle. We passed the summit casually, which despite low height is panoramic.

Followed a slight descent on path marked 1 to Rif. Puez hut. There obviously the manager changed and the hut earned the title of the most expensive among many we visited in the Dolomites. More expensive even than Sassolungo and Sesto areas, including Locatelli hut in the heart of Tre Cime. Not many people sitting in front of the hut, perhaps due to high prices.

To Piz du Puez we climbed the only access path marked 14. Beautiful weather and light breeze gave us wings and we were quickly at the top. It's an excellent viewpoint and in fine weather you see far around. Followed a short rest and return past Sassongher. More in the photo story …

Coordinates of starting point (La Villa): 46.5817328N, 11.8973897E
We park in the upper part of La Ville by the Santa Maria Assunta church.1
Following path 11, which leads us over some steep steps to the enlarged Gardenaccia hut.2
Continuing to follow path 11. View back at the meadow and hut in the background.3
Autumn fogs are not exactly on the wishlist :)4
Yippee, maybe the weather will clear up for us after all :)5
Immediately we are in better spirits. Above us is heavenly blue, the warm sun pampers us :)6
Everything is more beautiful, the path is gorgeous too :)7
We took the 11 as our own. It's still our guide…8
We walk through a wide valley with cliffs on one side and sheer slopes on the other9
The path is well-trodden, without rocks and excellent for walking10
It rises very gently and gains altitude more slowly11
Even the fog is beautiful if you just look at it from above downwards :)12
Intermediate peak, which is not that low… Piz de Gherdenacia - 2668 m13
Here is also a junction and we continue on path 1. The unusual sandy peak is Muntejela14
This one is ours, still quite distant goal… Piz de Puez15
We walk almost flat, excellent upright markings help16
Rif. Puez hut, this year home of expensive drinks and food prices17
Right behind it we turn onto the 14, the only accessible path to Piz de Puez18
The path is comfortable and overcomes the altitude in numerous switchbacks19
We are already at the top. Follows a scenic rest in the warm sun20
View of the wilder part of the Puez group. There only Piz Duleda and Sas Rigais are accessible to scree-walkers21
Descends on the same path. There's no other, no shortcuts either :)22
Slightly lower Col del Puez. An unmarked and easy path leads to it23
Nice weather lured many people outside, some are also heading to the summit24
View back. From somewhere annoying clouds have gathered25
Excellent markings, visible from afar. It's a pity that this is not the practice with us either.26
We switched to a slightly less trodden number 5 with markings still from the previous millennium :)27
In front of us is Sassongher in all its grandeur. We are not going up it today.28
But we will descend deep into the valley, where the descent to La Villa awaits us.29
Again we change the number and this time choose 7.30
This path is also beautiful. High walls on both sides of the valley, the ambience is wonderful.31
We walk along the bottom of the Val de Juel valley...32
We descended all the way to the hamlet Funtanacia, then turned left towards the starting point.33
We are already here. The sun has a low trajectory at this time of year, so the parking lot is already in shade.34
GPS track of the hiked path. It showed 20 km and 1800 m of ascent.35

Piz de Puez (21/7/2024)

In the apartment I put on my hiking boots and hit the road. Not far to the church, above it I take the footpath. To Ütia Gardenacia hut and a bit further the path was familiar, already hiked, further on "one" to Ütia Puez hut not yet. Weather in the morning heavenly, really fairy-tale like, uphill to Puez summit not even (too) hot. Between huts almost alone, only met and overtook one German-speaking family. Also few people in front of Puez hut, relatively early hour of course. Views such that I groaned aloud from sheer beauty, good no one nearby. Above Puez hut sheep with painted butts, more red than blue, the red ones I named mobile markers (red "ass" and white fleece). From hut to summit faster than expected, of course no complaints about that. On top quite a while alone, like forgotten by the creator, briefly with three locals, lady and gentlemen. Panorama pure pleasure, also because I've wandered a bit in these parts and many nearby and some farther mountains were already familiar. More by name than visited. Then descent, at the beginning noticed weather worsening and getting worse. Back at Puez hut crowd, so continue down out, with quickened pace because of weather. In Gardenacia quench thirst, just before that lightning strikes behind Sassongher, me happy to be so low already. Then down out, meanwhile some thunder, few raindrops fall, wind picks up, me in some "slow motion", as if not seeing weather getting worse. As punishment soaks me to the skin quarter hour before home, but it doesn't bother me.

Paths top-notch, markings and signposts excellent.

Wonderful trip that calls for repetition in another season, with quite different gear velik nasmeh
